Hi Daniel, It’s like riding a bike.It seems impossible until you do it,then it’s easy. Try getting the pattern in your head. There’s a piece in this video where I am just playing a paradiddle between the ride cymbal and the snare drum.You can hear the pattern because there are 2 different sounds,try to get that going in your brain,and it does,nt matter which rudiment,it works for them all. Again,(as usual!),not my idea.I saw a video of Sam Woodward with the Duke Ellington Orchestra in 1964 base most of his solo around this concept of splitting up rudiments between cymbals and drums. Mr Woodyard was pretttttty damn good!. Ian.

For me the paradiddle feeling is very similar to tap-up-down triplets. I used to practice it from triplets to reversed single drag tap -- and it turns into paradiddle when spreading strokes inside.

Spend hours + hours playing them, and try to hold yourself back so you play them much more slowly than your body wants to. And mix 'em up. Do left and right singles, doubles, and triples all at the same time. With some time yo'll amaze yourself how fast, even and interesting you can make then sound. Then, start moving them all over your entire drum kit, including cymbals. That's what Ian does. And don't forget to work on Ian Paice inspired double rolls. Once you pull all that together, you've got almost all elements of an Ian Paice drum solo. He's been my favorite rock drummer, too, since I was 14.

I'm a guitar player and Ritchie Blackmore being my favorite guitarist, Ian Paice is one of my favorite musicians ever. He's 73. Look at him play, how good he is and how he enjoys playing. Yeah I’ll concur! I discovered DP in 1972 and even to this day MK II are the best for me. Ian’s drum solo on The Mule from Made In Japan still gives me bumps. Rock On buddy!

I'll never grow tired of listening to & watching this. Met him in Madison, WI in the lounge at the Sheraton Motor Inn after a show on the Come Taste the Band tour. Many thanks for sharing Ian! My dad was a semi pro jazz drummer for decades holding down a full time job to help to keep us kids at the time fed and watered, he even taught part time between gigs. He passed away a few years ago on his 90's but as I was growing up there were a few drummers that he would often mention, the late great Buddy Rich (who I was lucky enough to see play live with his band) and believe it or not your good self in the same sentence. I count my self as fortunate to have seen you play live (unfortunately not with Purple) with Whitesnake and if I recall correctly a gig with Gary More and maybe Don Airey on Keyboard in the 80's. You drumming has lost none of what you did back then, you have a matured instinct behind the kit that shows in the likes of Sina and Yoyoka. It's a real pleasure to see and hear you play Ian.

At 73, the level of talent that Ian still possesses and can apply to a drum kit, is astounding. His playing has an element of swing and funk, that very few drummers posses today. Many are faster, and some are more technical, but very few are the musician that he is. Nicely done Ian, nicely done

I'd be real technical too at age 57 if I played 6-8 hrs a day like lot of these show offs on YT but I don't. I play once a week, sometimes only once every two weeks, I never had a real drum teacher since the 80s when I started, I'm self taught so ya I make a lot of mistakes and? Just like Ian said. I do need a little teaching and a few things but won't pay 50-100 dollars a half hr

Ian, I’m 64 years old. Every since I heard Chasing Shadows, you have been my drumming hero. There are others more technical, as you alluded to, Neil Peart, for one, rest his soul, but you, sir, have never stopped being my favorite. When people ask me who I think the best drummer is, I sit them down and play the studio version of Burn! Bless you for your musical spirit!

.....What I love about this Gentleman (apart for his immense Talent that never dies), is his outlook towards the Art of Drumming and the right mentality to be applied to the music-business in general. No wonder why he made it so big in His career. This type of Global and Legendary success is well beyond practice, drum rudiments, drum books, and Berklee College of Music. To make it big in any career you need to start thinking as this Gentleman does: Open minded, bright, humble and with intelligent way of feeling and thinking. Thank you Mr. Paice. You were the main influence for my dad who was a drummer all through the 60's up until a few years ago when we lost him. I still have all of his original Deep purple vinyl records that he used to practice to and still have his original Ludwig drum set which he said was an exact copy of the one you used when you boys recorded the "Made in Japan" LP. He always said you were the best he had ever heard and whenever he saw you live or on a concert video, he always had a mirror with him to watch your reflection in it to get the right handed view of you playing which I thought was an ingenious idea that he had. He said seeing you playing in a right handed view made all the difference for him. I still remember when he came home with the "Who do we think we are" LP and thought your drums on "Rat Bat Blue" and "Super Trooper" were beyond amazing! Thank you Mr. Paice for being such a wonderful influence for my dad during those happy times of great rock music back in the day". my brothers and I wish you the very best in 2022 and beyond. I was 11 when I came across a Deep Purple record of my father’s collection. The song “Wring That Neck” instantly became my favorite…the whole band sounded fantastic and the drums were thunderous. That’s when my love for rock music and for drumming started. It’s all this man’s fault! :D Now I’m 38 and still a super fan of these gentlemen. Today’s heavy music exists thanks to guys like Mr. Paice, Blackmore and the late Jon Lord. Eternal respect and gratitude to these giants of mankind.

It is like those jazz masters back in the 1950s and 1960s. But in 2022! I am truly amazed. Thank you for sharing your lifelong experience with the world, Ian. I have not played since 2018, when the band broke up. I miss it a lot. The drums stored away, no place to set them up anymore. My hands are so itchy now, this video is so full of energy, which "infects" me in a very good, desirable way. Of course, I would be never ever even close to this performance. But I would "feel" and "live" through what I manage to perform. In the beginning of this video is a great truth. I have seen many drummers. Some professional studio drummers, who can and do play by the notes. However, when I saw some of them performing live with other artists (the drummer, or even worse, the whole rhythm section being just "generic" players) it was often painful. Sure, they did play good. Technically way better than others. But I do miss what I call "feeling". They did not "feel", "live", "perform". They just "do the job". And do it great. But often art is not about perfection. They played as if some artists drew perfect, photograph like paintings. While certainly hard, requiring skill, it is not always what people admire when they are in awe when looking at e.g. Van Gogh. I rather listen to a passionate amateur, who is an active part of the group, not just some "generic instrument". I even do not mind if she/he makes a mistake. What kills it for me is sterility in some players. Ian is certainly NOT one of them.

WOW! As an amateur drummer for about 55yrs I think I've always known that most/many drum solos are basically practice routines. PLUS, you are probably my favourite drummer; or at least the one who influenced me the most. Having said that, these clips at the end of the video are probably among the best solos I've EVER heard. And, considering that YOU consider them 'practising', or as near as YOU get to practising, I am in total awe. I was born in 75, so DP were even ahead of my time, though that didn't stop me at like 5 getting my Dad's Machine Head Record I knew he loved and learning everything on it. I started at about 5 or so. And of Course listened to Sabbath, The Who and the other great 70's bands before I became a metal drummer. Regardless i ALWAYS use your drum licks in about everything I play, along with Nicko Mcbrain being my other biggest influence. I became a High-hat freak!! Smoke On The Water, Space Truckin', Lazy and Highway Star, just all classics. Just came upon this channel. Never stop playing, your an Icon sir!! I'm 48 now, so I hope I can still do this for another 20 years at least. Truly inspiring. And actually my son's name is IAN. 😁👌👍

One of the things I have always liked about Paice's drumming is that he's never needed to play with the biggest kit in town or anything like that to sound punchy, powerful and clean at the same time. I've got nothing against big drum kits, of course... provided you actually make us of the whole thing, which far too many drummers just don't do, which makes me ask, 'well, what's the point, then?' And the other thing is how relaxed he normally looks, as if flowing with what he is playing at any given time. With other guys you always see the grimacing faces and the physical performance, as if they were working out rather than playing and you HAD to realise how powerful they are. Well, does that make them sound any better or any stronger? It's a rhetorical question, of course. Thank you so much for sharing this, Sir, long live Deep Purple, and happy 2022 everyone!!

the point to big drum kits was two fold, one it fed the drummers ego, but they were brought out starting with Moon and Baker by the drum manufacturers taking note that the bigger kits attract more buyers and more buyers to buy more drums, so it was smart to give the pro's that wanted them free kits or signing them to contracts with free kits etc. Like everything else in life it's sales.

August 14, 2024 just saw Deep Purple and Ian Pace played like he was 25 years old. He is such a master at the drums. YES opened for them and Steve Howe was also very, very good. The show was at the Hollywood Hard Rock in Davie Florida… only holds a few thousand people. So honored to see such talent! Catch this show if you can! Depp Purple opened with Highway Star… so cool!
