Ian's technique is what allowed him to play so furiously for decades without ever having any physical ailments that usually affect musicians who engage in repetitive motion for long periods of time. The guy's a septuagenarian machine..

What a timing! I just got back from their concert in Poland. The whole band and Ian are in phenomenal shape. They played a nearly two-hour mega concert. The sound of the drums was amazing 🥁🔥

There is just something about the sound of those 2002 cymbals. Warm and rich sounding. I've always played Zildjian, but every time I hear those, I want a set. Mmm, mmm!!
@garethparr94822 сағат бұрын
Yes me to. Played semi pro for over 30 years but called it a day 6 years ago. I used mainly zildjian with a couple of 2002 crash and China type. But since Iv retired I wished I’d played all paiste. Think they have the edge over zildjian 👍

Ian is the goat! All those old British players are legends but to me Mr. Paice was the initial modern metal drummer because of his speed, technique and ingenuity. Everybody in Deep Purple was (is) insanely talented and Made In Japan is still one of the best live albums ever recorded because of the sound and the musicianship displayed on it. Whatever combination of drugs they were on, it worked!

Not very many Southpaw drummers, the only other that pops into my head is Jon Dette who's played for Testament, Slayer, Anthrax and White Zombie. I'm right handed but play drums as a Southpaw, same when I played goal for my hockey team as a kid, used lefty gear and stick because I catch flying pucks faster with my right hand.

@derfred858 сағат бұрын
There‘s not much to wonder - I saw an interview the other day in which Ian stated, he just likes it better without risers as he feels more „into it“ then… more part of the band so to say.

People always go on about a 14" deep bass drum being better (which I agee with ) and then they have 16" deep floor toms??? Why aren't floor toms 16/10 and 18/12?
@rhythmista7707Сағат бұрын
Btw, not a pinstripe on the batter side of his kick. Its clearly a powerstroke 3, as you can see by the double stripes and internal muffling ring. 😊

Wondering if lan still has his Ludwig drum kit from the 70’s
@mrnegronis15 сағат бұрын
Ian's kits always look cool because of the unusual sizes and the fact it's set up left handed; but the finishes tend to be very blah. He tends to have standard finishes that any customer could get. He had one custom painted kit back in the 70s but I don't remember any other kit that he used that was personalized to that extent.
@rix292 сағат бұрын
Fabulous drummer and insight into his playing and kit set up. unfortunately, the audio was recorded through a potato
@MatthewBarelick19 сағат бұрын
Are you using shure mics all around internally i noticed the shure beta 52 on the bass drum! The only thing I dont like about internal mics is that we need to carry a duplicate drum with another internal may micing system which does add to the cost and in today's economy it s literally next to impossible unless we have a huge budget like "deep purple" does!

@1111Paiste9 сағат бұрын
Too bad the audio is so terrible. Ian is an amazing drummer. He’s only a month or so younger that Bonham was. Imagine if Bonham was still alive, he’d could at be playing today, like Paice. BTW, that looks like a Powerstroke 3 or 4 on the bass drum, not a Pinstripe.

He once said he's always been a maple guy because he thinks that maple drums give more power and depth. And he prefers thinner shells because these are supposed to have "more depth" as well. 😄
