Ian is the goat! All those old British players are legends but to me Mr. Paice was the initial modern metal drummer because of his speed, technique and ingenuity. Everybody in Deep Purple was (is) insanely talented and Made In Japan is still one of the best live albums ever recorded because of the sound and the musicianship displayed on it. Whatever combination of drugs they were on, it worked!

It's wonderful to see Mr. Pace in the video footage playing the song so relaxed and yet so precise. I have been a fan since the mid 1970s when I got to see Deep Purple at the Orange Bowl in Miami Florida. I have a not so funny story about that day. I was in high school and went to the concert with a sandwich and an orange. I got to my seat, ate the sandwich and went to eat the orange, which turned out to be rotten. I was sitting pretty high up in the stands and decided to throw the orange into an area between the stage and first row of seats. There were no people there so I figured it was safe to throw the thing down there...well...I threw the orange, and to my surprise it went much further than I anticipated and it landed right in front of Ian Pace's bass drum and exploded all over the front of it! I was sure I would get thrown out, but nobody saw it happen. I felt horrible and was embarrassed.

Excellent having one of the pioneer drummers of our time still kicking and taking interviews. It's a shame that the audio has put a dent on this". I think his 1973 Ludwig kit (Made in Japan) sounded the best. did he use that 73 kit recording "Machine head"?. I used the CC option and read this entire interview as I watched which was 100% better😃 What is that electronic box under his hi-hat for?

You watch Ian play, and regardless of the "odd" configuration of his drum set, you can't help but notice Ian has great technique. Elbows in close to the body, and it is all about wrist action to get the job done. Which this man has done quite well, and continues to do so. And with a last name like that of course you must play Paiste cymbals! lol Ian Paice Rocks!
