I own a 10.5 switchblock sbr by noveske and its super reliable so it is possible, but its also adjustable gas too (and weights a metric ton). @crazyfvck3 жыл бұрын
@Bobby Lawn For running matches, plinking, etc., that barrel length is just fine, and you don't really lose anything (except for your hearing ;) ) But for serious use, short-barreled 5.56 rifles can give you problems. The effectiveness of 5.56 is mostly due to it's velocity, which drops dramatically with a short barrel. If you are going up against individuals wearing body armor, which is more and more likely these days, you need as much velocity as possible to get through it. I've watched enough armor test videos over the years to come to the conclusion that I don't want an AR for defensive purposes with less than an 18" barrel. It's worth pointing out that the original AR came out with a 20" barrel, which you don't see many people running these days. I have AR pistols with 10.5" barrels for the fun/cool factor, but I wouldn't push them into a defensive role unless I had no other choice. Just my personal preference.

I love how people always say that gun need folding stock, when its really good only for storage in tight spaces like APC or when you have 10000 of rifles in storage. In real life no one really use folding stock, people just hang it as it is on the wall or put it in closet. They fold/unfold it only when they show off or when they carry it from home/range to car, but they have space for whole gun in their car, its not like they drive mini cooper...

FYI. Tacstar is a subsidiary brand owned by Lyman. Most Tacstar products are in the "tacticool" category. I built about a dozen WWSD clones / variations and used those CF hand guards on a few. They seem to be in the middle of the spectrum. Less than half the price of a Faxon, well made, but not as refined a product as Faxon or similar.

Don't forget that A1 stocked XM177E1s were pretty common during the Vietnam War, because the heavier buffer (roughly the same weight as a 9mm buffer) made the short barrelled weapon more reliable. It prevented bolt bounce for one thing. Fixed stock carbines are my favorite configuration.

You are right to use a fixed stock. Part of the trouble with the platform is its allergy to compactness. If you are losing barrel length ,you want more stability coming from somewhere.
@bp9683 жыл бұрын
Your using the wrong collapsible stocks then. A good modern collapsible is just as solid as a full stock. The disadvantage to a full stock is you cant adjust it for different shooting stances or gear. With armor you want a collapsible, and if your shooting squared off a collapsible is better. Also some of us are just shaped all weird and an adjustable makes a huge difference. I personally usually use it mostly collapsed unless im shooting from prone or a bench.
@schrodingersgat43443 жыл бұрын
@@bp968 Perhaps I was unclear. The collapseables do not offer a sufficient amount of "shortness". I have never found one I liked. [ I don't need to run body armor nor do I wear extra heavy coats. ] They offer nothing for me. If I wanted to run a rifle or carbine out of my vehicle ; AR pattern weapons would be last on my list. Bullpups are better for it , as are folding stocked weapons. Neither forces you to sacrifice barrel length. Annecdote: Friend and I were discussing the Magpul ,Zhukov S stock. I like it because it folds right and allows me to retain a scope mount with it folded. My friend was concerned about access to the safety. I told him he was being silly. "If things are so rough that I am driving around with a loaded AK in my front seat...the safety won't even be on."

For those thinking it's still too long, just a point of information: a stock FAMAS F1 bullpup is 29.8 in long. A Desert Tech MDR is between 27.5in and 31.0in long. So Ian has made a very handy fixed stock carbine that has standard AR ergonomics in the length of a bullpup.

If you want to ask questions of "why" - then do so without the hypocrisy and smugness - only then will you grow from the "EXTENSIVE" knowledge from someone who knows "A LOT" about firearms . Isn't there a flash hider that directs the blast down range? Geoff Who is so old he was issued that web gear in 1972!!
@geodkyt3 жыл бұрын
There are various "blast cans" that do that. They're basically like the WWII conical "flash hiders" (that they are intended to hide the flash from the *shooter* so it doesn't blind them at night; they also focus the blast forward). You can direct thread them (like a standard flash suppressor), or do what I do. Which is to use a Yankee Hill Machine Quick Detach muzzle brake or flash suppressor that has a large threaded collar intended for threading a silencer without removing the muzzle brake; YHM makes a blast can that fits that QD threading and fits over the muzzle brake... using this combo cuts down of the effectiveness of the brake or flash suppressor a bit, but also redirects the blast and flash remaining forward, away from the shooter and the folks on his flanks.
@J.DeLaPoer3 жыл бұрын
Yeah I used to be all about the tactical "moving bits" (I'm stealing that!), and my favorite AR was a 12" HBAR with a heavy monolithic quad-railed front end. Then I got a vintage SP1 and realized I actually _prefer_ the super lightweight, fixed stock, combat sights, slick-side retro version instead. It's half the weight of my other ARs, and because of that actually seems to handle better despite being much longer and non-adjustable.
