I think Ian is my favorite non-Frank Mother.

That's amazing because his ex-wife, Ruth, was very well schooled in music herself. She studied at both Ithaca College and Juilliard.

Is this part of a longer interview? I'm so pleased to see Ian back on board as he dropped out of the Zappa circle for a long time.

Ian was the key element in the early Mothers of Invention. Without him, it all would have been different.

Definitely. When Frank composed his music at the piano, using stick fingers, and would then write down the notes on his A3 sheets, he would get Ian to play it for him with both hands because Frank couldn't do so, and Frank would hear it for the first time, and his face would become sublime.

You can read about some of Ian's experiences playing with Frank in my memoir, 'Freak Out! My Life with Frank Zappa 1968-1971 Laurel Canyon' not found in other books. It is my story of a straight English girl thrown into the middle of the Mothers of Invention experience.
