I love fishing hemp and tares during the summer months. There isn't an imitation tare on the market, as far as I know. And s far as I can see, all imitation baits float, which is no good if you are actually fishing a stick or waggler, where you ideally need the imitation bait to sink in a natural manner. But back to an imitation tare - how welcome that would be, cos we all know what a pain in arse, hooking a tare can be.

I used to fish the Bristol Avon on hemp and tares nearly forty years ago, and had the same thought. So I tried using a black rubber float band on a size 16 or 14 hook to great effect. One afternoon I had nearly 60lbs of really decent Roach and a few Chub fishing a black float rubber under a stick float, and regularly out-fished much better anglers in the next pegs using tares on the hook. I think it was down to two reasons. 1/ The fish prefer hemp to tares, and the float rubber resembled a big hemp seed rather than a tare, and 2/ The time saved on changing the bait. My reasoning was that people only fish tares on the hook because hemp-seed, although a great attractor and loose feed, is so tricky to present as a hook-bait, and a float rubber just looks like a big hemp-seed to a hungry Roach.

"Huge chub"? If that chub is "huge", then I need to check my old Avons. My biggest chub, after 35 years of fishing the Yorkshire rivers, is 5lb 12oz (caught on bread, not pellets) and it would have dwarfed the one in this video. Pessimistic Avons (sounds like a band that John Peel would have had play a session)!

Chub can be tricky to judge but I would say that his Avons are optimistic, whereas my old set are pessimistic!

first cast? HAHAHA any idiot could catch a chub from that weir its packed with chub, your not allowed to fish it and they are fed pellets every day! Its the equivelent of catching a trout from a trout farm.

I still use my Avon scales that I bought in 1983. Mine are quite pessimistic though (must get them checked)! My biggest chub of 5lb 12oz might well have been a 7 pounder on his optimistic new Avons!
