It's fair to say the older players Bergkamp, Henry, Vieira respected Wenger to the max that they would obey by his rules. Remember in Wenger's final year at Arsenal, Alex Iwobi was at a party 24 hours before a game.. This generation of players just didn't appreciate him enough
@kwameboadukissi4263 жыл бұрын
It is also safe to say that Arsene had become a granddad by the end of his reign to the boys hence players like Iwobi having the audacity to break the rules. You know, a strict father usually becomes a puppy to his grandchildren.

Damn... that story about Bergkamp and the teabags is amazing. I don't care for Arsenal in the slightest, but the expectations and accountability they had was a huge reason why they were able to get so stuck in when it came time to play Man United and Newcastle in the mid 90s up to the early 00s. This is a perfect example of how people change over even immediate generations. On one hand there's Ian, Bergkamp and their take on the nutrition regime planned by Wenger. Although Ian plays a "disobedient prat" against Wenger's disciplinary actions, at the end of the day, he believes all of this ultimately makes the team better. On the other hand, you apply the same disciplinary nutrition regime to the current crop of players, they become rebellious, throw tantrums and compromise their performance just to oust him altogether. Player Power have made legendary clubs like Arsenal, United and Chelsea falter to the point where they struggle for getting first 4 of the table. Managers who found a way to adjust to that change of mentality and still provide some degree of discipline to players have excelled to lead nowadays: Pep and Klopp are such kind of managers.

Yes, player power like at Chelsea, and Utd when under Mourinho.. However, don't forget that this is not a new phenomena, it happened to Clough at Leeds too, back in the 70's. A manager needs to earn the respect first like in any working environment. It probably doesn't help if you go into a team that has a high pedigree already or has won trophies recently and then try to alter everything at once.

Wenger's time was up, for he had failed to adapt to the evolving football climate which is ironic as he was so revolutionary when he joined the team. Football had changed so much during his 23 years and it was time for a change. Emery wasn't the answer, but here's hoping Arteta is.

As silly as it seems things like this with English Football player mentality are why it took us so long to get back to being close to winning a Big Tournament at international level after Euro 96, because other teams and other players had the right attirude towards health and fitness and disciple and being professional naturally so achieved great things at domestic and international level. Whereas we probably had some players who did it naturally anyway and got what manager's and staff were trying to do, but too many overgrown school boys who were trying to find loopholes (and thinking it was funny bending/defying the rules cause it gave them a story to tell) knocking around. Took another 15-20 years of coming short even with great players in the squad for the penny to drop and for us to get the message at last!
