Ashley, I just want to say a BIG thank you!! You taught me more than my IB English teacher had taught me for the past year 🙇‍. That literary device effect list is so helpful that I have to pause the video and calm down my excitement for 10 seconds. Same for your ingenious classification of the themes into "effects of" and "nature of" categories -- I always struggle with coming up with a good theme when writing Paper 1 essays; this strategy suddenly simplifies everything so much! If I get a 7 in my upcoming May 2022 English Literature A Paper 1 exam, it will be at least 50% due to your tips. Thank you Ashley!!

The “nature of” and “effect of” strategy sounds effective and efficient :) I will definitely adopt this, because I have always had trouble with ensuring my paragraphs were cohesive units to satisfy my thesis! A strategy I am currently using is to use essay writing in IB Eng Lit as an excuse to write social justice-related manifestos hahaha. If you have personal interest in a particular issue or general topic, harnessing that passion will definitely serve you well in exam conditions, so you don’t spiral towards stress :’) Another helpful video, thanks so much once again :D

Yes, that strategy really helped me to stick with my thesis! And that's great you've been able to bring your passions into the course haha. The global issue for the IO seems like it would be a great place to stage a social justice manifesto - have you done the IO yet?

@@ashleysacademy7496 unfortunately, i didnt do as well as i did on my IO as i did with my HL essay :’) I did use both as opportunities to talk about something I cared about, but I was definitely more comfortable with the planning process of the HL essay rather than the IO haha
@ashleysacademy7496
@ashleysacademy7496 3 жыл бұрын
Oh no, sorry that your IO didn't turn out as well :') at least, like you said your HL essay balanced it out, plus you got to write about things you cared about (we spend so much time on the IAs that enjoying at least one aspect of them is important)

Hi Ashley, I was wondering if you still have a recording of your IO. Even though the marking scheme changed quite a lot over the years, but I think the main things they're looking for still stays the same. Thank you so much!

Thank you Ashley. My daughter is having hard time with English Exam and I’m trying to find Sth useful for her. She is quite good at math and science, but her English and French class are messing up her note. If you have some times, is there any way she can get help from you?

Hi Ashley, thank you for such an amazing video. But I have a question (I'm an SL student btw), how much do you need to write on paper 1 and paper 2? For example, my teacher is recommending 1500 words for paper 2. But can it really be that much?

Hi Vic! Glad to hear you're enjoying the ib videos! After I finish editing the paper 2 English lit video you'll be glad to know language B tips are the next on the chopping block. But until then I'd say: 1. know the formatting and vocab for the different texts types in the written part of the exam so that you can scoop up those easy marks 2. learn several "universal phrases" or expressions that you can slot into any sentence, and stuff these with idioms or advanced grammar like the dreaded subjunctive e.g. "avant que ce ne soit trop tard" (before it it's too late), "bien que je sache que..." (although I know that...). That way, in your writing or speaking, you don't have formulate sentences with complex grammar on the spot, you can mostly speak/write in simple sentences and then just chuck in one of these phrases here and there to boost your marks. 3. Group your vocab under the topics you learned in class. You don't have to understand everything in French, just the subjects covered in the syllabus. So given you're almost at final exams and so no longer really at the stage for general language skill improvement, practice reading and writing only on these subjects so that you pick up the commonly used vocab that you will need in these contexts. Hope this helps et bonne chance pour les examens ❤️
