Here is my sad story... I had a 1982 made in Japan Ibanez AS50. Killer guitar. I had rescued it from a friend in financial trouble. Like a fool I traded it for....wait for it.... an Alesis SR-16 drum machine. Really really foolish

@Particle Man Well this regretful event took place back in 1992. No one cared too much for a Japanese Ibanez. I have some worse stories involving an American P bass and an Acoustic brand bass amp. There seems to be a middle period of the life of an instrument where it is just old enough to drop its value before it becomes collectible. And that reminds me of a early 70’s strat I bought for $90 back in 82. Dont have that either

I actually tried a lot of traditional style guitars to buy for my brother as a birthday present, and went from Strat, Tele, LP, SG, and finally fell in love with the semi-hollows. The Epiphone Dot, and the Epiphone Sheridan were front runners, until my friend who was helping me choose pointed out the Ibanez AS93FM-VLS model you were demoing. The Ibanez was clearly a cut above, firstly in appearace, the flame maple burst was gorgeous, and it wasn't just the top, it was the back and sides, plus the binding, and gold hardware very classy. The Super 58 pickups sounded great, they are used by Ibanez on their higher end jazz models too (I believe the Little George Benson series uses them). The three piece neck felt great, the block inlays in what looks like an ebony fretboard... very nice. The only criticism from my end is the headstock, I prefer the strings to have less of an angle over the nut, and these widening headstocks just lead to a little tuning instability by design. I also liked the sure grip rubber on the knobs too, all up it was a winner, and was priced between the Dot and the Sheridan, so you couldn't go wrong. My brother loves the guitar btw.

I have an Ibanez AM93-AYS. Gorgeous guitar. Quilted maple top and back, and like yours, a flawless guitar. One of the last of my 25 electrics I would ever sell. And 13 of those are semi- hollow or hollow body. Included are Epiphone, Gretsch, D’Angelico, Fender, and PRS. Like yours, the Super 58 pickups are nicely balanced, and can be pleasingly crisp and bright. Love it!

I love the old Ibanez AS200's from the early to late 80's. Couldn't find any original vintage models that I could afford that was also in decent condition. So, I bought a newer Ibanez JSM10 which is practically the exact same thing as an early 80's AS200. Very pleased with the guitar. I gigged it for the first time recently and it performed flawlessly.

That violin burst is gorgeous and the guitar sounds very good like I thought it would. When I was in the market for a guitar like this lefty I had it narrowed down to 2 choices. Ibanez like this one or Gretsch. I went with the Gretsch because they're making this style alot longer but I'm sure there's no regrets with this one. 2 yrs ago I bought an Ibanez, cheapest one they make $200. Love it, very good quality to my surprise. Actually shocked at the quality.

As much as I love Gibson hollow and semi hollows (and the new Made in USA Casino by Epiphone), the ArtStar line from Ibanez is so much better in terms of quality control. May not have as iconic of a headstock as Gibson, but everything else is vastly better. I say this as someone who has mostly only owned Gibson ES 330, 335, 350 guitars throughout my life. The ArtStar action, fretboard, pickup quality and overall quality in general is truly lightyears better than Gibson QC these days.

How do you think the Artcore semi hollows compare to the 335 in terms of sound quality and feel? I have an AS93, but I keep kicking around picking up a 335 (or a heritage 535). I have a set of really nice boutique PAFs I could throw in the Ibanez, and if that gets me into the same range of sound then there probably isn't much point in getting the 335 save for the name.

That guitar is gorgeous! I'm playing a AS 73 as I type but I previously owned I think it was an AF 75 in violin burst or something like that. It was so absolutely gorgeous, it was a piece of art. Had the floating bridge and the tail piece that attaches to the bottom, not the face of the guitar. The thing had a birch pick guard...and it was bound! It's the only guitar I regret selling.

I too have the AS73 and it instantly became my 'go to' guitar. In fact I sold my USA Strat and USA Highway One Tele because although they are great guitars they did not have the sheer playability of the Ibanez. Ridiculously good value for money, I'm sure I paid less than £400 3 years ago for it.

The venerable ES-335 design is probably the most versatile design for an electric guitar. Regardless of which company makes a version of that outstanding guitar, and regardless of where the instruments are made, they all have the potential to be excellent. Ibanez has an outstanding reputation. They're a Japanese company and part of a centuries old tradition of excellently crafted instruments.

I have the Ibanez AS103 I got about 11 years ago. Custom 58 pickups, semi-hollow, flamed maple. They went for around 1,000.00. It's a premium guitar for sure, and it's a keeper, although I too prefer my Tele! Luckily mine doesn't have the stupid lightning bolt logo Ibanez used for a while. That just didn't look right on a guitar. The AS103 was discontinued after 2012. The somewhat similar AS153 was introduced for 2013.
@charlie-obrien
@charlie-obrien Жыл бұрын
You might have the rare "road map" headstock logo on yours. And you are right the AS103 (before that it was an AS80) was discontinued and then became the AS153, which all have similar upgrades and downgrades in specs. The AS153 was itself recently discontinued in favor of the AS113 for 2023. I have one of the new ones on order and can't wait to try it out after all of my research. Ibanez never completely throws away a good guitar design, they just re-number it, raise the price a bit and send it out again. lol

I have owned an AS73 and AF75. Traded both after a time. Never got the sound I wanted even with upgraded pots and caps. They helped, but not enough. They WERE well built and played very well after setup. I DID NOT like the floating bridge on the AF75 however. My biggest beef with both was dark muddy tone with the 'buckers, something I find with many guitars I have tried. Then I got a D'Angelico Premier DC with factory S-D P90s and that is where I found my tone. Power and chiming clarity without the darkness. But it took a trial of 3 prior P90 guitars before I found the 'one'.

I bought the Ibanez AS93FM in red almost two months ago. I had wanted a semi hollow ES335 type guitar for many years. I spent a lot of time shopping for the right guitar in my budget range and tested many different brands and models. The AS93 ended up as the best choice for me with all things considered. I love the pickups and the tone. It seems a little darker than the ES335 but without seeming muddy or lacking highs. It has a glassy midrange bark that I like. The body style is slightly different with the sharper upper and lower horns which to me looks a little more sleek than Gibson and other similar models. It covers the ES335 ground nicely but has enough difference to have it's own thing going on. I also considered the Epiphone Sheraton II and a Gretsch center block (one of the streamliner or electromatic models of similar price). It was not an easy decision. All three were great in their own way.

Very nice guitar! I considered one of these a couple years ago, but went with Epiphone instead. In fact, one of the things that helped me choose the Epi was that the Ibanez almost sounded TOO hollow for my taste, which I think is the same acoustic quality you’re talking about. At any rate though, it was a close race! They’re both great!

As for semi-hollowbodies: I own a Ibanez AS93 (90's model) and a Hagström Viking with Gibson Custom 58's, and previously owned a Korean Epiphone Sheraton II. The Epi I sold: wonderfull build, but it sounded too muffled and had quite a beefy neck for my taste. The Hag is more of a 'modern player', has a bite to it. The Ibanez I love for it's balanced, sweet tone, less agressive and much more 'jazzy'. Both the Hag and the Ibanez have slim necks, which I like. Both guitars play like a dream. If I had to keep just one, it would probably be the Ibanez. With pain, though...

Ibanez super 58 pickups are usually alnico 3 which I don't like, they are a little too low in output but also are too bright. I guess you have Super 58 pickups, that would be Ibanez' norm on semi hollows. Aside from that the guitar is probably the best deal on a 335 type guitar. FWIW

By coincidence, I have both an Epiphone Sheraton II and the Ibanez AS93. I agree with Mr Fossett's review and your assessment. I have three observations. (1) The Ibanez neck is thinner than the Ibanez. The Ibanez neck is not as thin as Ibanez hard rock guitars like the RG but it is noticeably thinner than the Sheraton. For people with small hands like me, that's a desirable feature. (2) The Ibanez weighs noticeably less than the Ibanez: it's 7.5 vs 8.5 pounds. The Ibanez body is slightly smaller and the neck slightly heavier, and that accounts for some of the lightness, but I think the main reason is that the centre block is much lighter. Apparently the Sheraton has a mahogany centre block and the Ibanez is maple. As a result, the Ibanez is noticeably lighter much more comfortable to play. (3) Mr Fossett is correct that the Ibanez sounds bright and clear, and I would add much more so than the Sheraton. It really has a nice jangly vibe to it. I always thought that an AS93 variant could have P-90 style pickups in it. It would sound very Casino-ish without the Casino's tendency to feed-back.

I have 2 Ibanez guitars! Bought them both back in early 2001. Mine is a AS83-VLS! It was the best guitar for the money in a hollow body electric under $1000 back then. I had on loan a 58 ES-225 from my father in law a few years before he passed. He wanted it back so he could pass on to his son. So after that I had kept looking for another ES style!

I got this the other year and the guitar is fantastic. I put flatwounds on and it's incredible for jazz. Mine has a few of the fret inlays slightly off colour and a bit brown in places, it could just rub off I'm not entirely sure what it is. For the price it's a great guitar!

Prefer it to my Gibson. Actually, prefer it to both of my Gibsons. Quality control is top notch, and while there is considerable debate about the Super 58 Customs being A3, A5 or ceramic*, they are glassy, smooth and punch well above their class. If I have any reservations, it is that you do not get the deepr low end you get on an ES-335. But dollar-for-dollar, the AS93 is a fantastic instrument. *Ibanez claims A3, but the bridge clocks around 10K or what I would expect out of an A5 or ceramic. And Ibanez does not make it easy to verify

Those are regular super 58s in the as93 tho right? Not the lesser quality custom 58's ?

@@skinsolproductions There is much speculation online and little hard data to back it up. The Super 58 Customs are the ones that come with the mid-tier Ibanez models. My view is that they are NOT the ceramic versions used circa 2005-10 and are likely Alnico V. The upper tier models (say, JSM10 or JSM100) use the Super 58s (no "Custom" in the name) and are Alnico II or IIIs I believe. But I like the sparkle in the Customs. They are not shrill; and if you don't dig their high e.q. profile, just roll off the tone; they are wonderful, clear. (I have a Gibson Classic 57 in the neck right now, but frankly I think I like the stock pu better).

you seem surprised that ibanez makes a good jazz guitar, right after your opening music, which was full of licks that sound inspired by george benson, who plays ibanez. super 58s are great pick ups, they will cover ALOT of ground. also, NO ONE makes better knobs than ibanez, and that's a fact. i have had several semi hollow guitars over the years, epiphone, ibanez, canadian dillion, and rickenbacker. the one i currently own is a d'angelico. it's a great guitar, but the bridge pickup is absurdly hot. i need to swap it out for something more appropriate, but the feed back and harmonic over tones are sooo much fun, i keep putting it off. consequently, i play more rock with it than i intended to when i bought it.

The George Benson or John Scofield guitars are more than a step up price wise. As would I assume are the guitars Ibanez builds for them. It was a pleasant surprise that a guitar under $1k would be this high quality, as I stated.

I have the JSM 10--very similar to yours, but it is the Made in China John Scofield model. It is pretty much the best guitar I've had in 36 years of playing. It always seems weird that Ibanez semis (except for the Made in Japan ones) have the neck joint start after the 15th fret, but I bet that and the multi-piece neck help with stability (and the neck access is no different than on a Les Paul, or a Fender). The other weird thing, is NOBODY every mentions this difference from Gibson style semis. Play your new guitar in good health!

I had an original 1982 AS200 Artist, one of first mfgd. I selected it over the ES-335 Gibson. Sold it 4 years ago for pretty good money. Seller remorse! This one you’re showing looks like it would be a good replacement. I studied under Harry Volpe for a few years in the 60’s, so jazz sound is it for me.

Only things ruining the aesthetics are the big fat ugly screwhead on the beautiful scratchplate, and the huge, bulbous tulip at the head stock's top. Other than that it's a wonderful instrument...that is if you can find an actual Japanese manufactured one.
