I finally got my bass in this past weekend. I got the Yamaha 174 mango wood version. My decision was based on price rather than sound. But I'm very happy with my purchase. MF offered me a great deal of $191 to buy it so I went with that. As far as the bass itself, it is beautiful but more brownish in grain than orange. The fretboard and neck are great and feel good for my smaller hands. It plays well and sounds good through my Fender Rumble 25 amp. Great feeling bass. As for the Ibanez I'd still love to have one. Might be on the list later this year :) Thanks everyone for comments and advice on this.

I have the Yamaha TRBX174EW with the tobacco sunburst finish. I got it for $219.00 and it gives you a lot for the price! A full 24 frets while the revered Fender Precision only has 20, P-J pickups give you a little more versatility and the satin finish on the back of the maple neck provides easy thumb sliding even when your hands sweat. It's not too heavy and it's well-balanced. Overall, a great beginner's bass that you can carry into your professional career!!

Baby bassist here - I just got my first bass all of two months ago. No sick licks or basslines just yet, but I'm getting pretty good with scales :D. I went with the Yamaha (in Tobacco Sunburst, very handsome) and I haven't had a single regret. Admittedly I have a limited basis for comparison, but I've been very happy overall with it, especially once I got it set up professionally. Especially on the D and G string, the action is so low without any buzzing that I swear I can just think about fretting and it'll happen. Given my current level, goals, and the quality of the bass itself, I think it's going to be a very long time before I'm in the market for anything else.

Definitely go for the Yamaha. My biggest gripe with the Ibanez is the bass boost control which makes it sound muddy. For beginners a passive instrument is probably a more suitable option, plus with the Yamaha you get 24 frets vs the Ibanez only having 22.

The one that feels best in the hands is always the best way to go. The shape of the neck and fretboard, and the string action, is the interface between you and your rig. Your signal can be changed with new pickups or an EQ, but the setup of the bass and the way it physcally responds to your hands affects how you play and how it sounds. You can hear sometimes on recordings whether the bass is set up with low or high action.

I'm a beginner and just bought the red TRBX174. They also had the EW "tobacco sunburst" version, but Ilked the red one more so got to save myself $50 + tax. I can honestly see myself just keeping this bass for years, upgrading things as I feel the need to (knobs, pickups, bridge, maybe tuners but I've tuned it once and it's still dead on after a week.)

Hands down the yamaha. When it comes to entry level basses for pretty much anything they take the cake as all 'rounders. Cant go wrong. Especially if they have a taste for prog its probably the best call. Though on a personal note I love string entry level basses and would recommend they consider them vs a yamaha.

Both of these basses are more than good enough for the money. I own both. I find them suitable even for professional recordings. They will both work just fine if you know how to adjust the sound correctly. I even find that with both of these basses, you don't even need something as expensive as a Fender bass. It's all about how you adjust your sound and how you play. I feel that in this case, the Ibanez is a bit more of a better bass, but both of them are more than good enough.

I had the GSR 205 when I was younger and it really helped me build the foundations for learning the bass. Neck felt smooth and comfy in my hands, action was a bit high but I learned to fiddle with the truss rod, and it was generally very fun to play. Its original tone is a bit too middy imo, but an EQ can always fix that. My only issue was how I always had to buy 9V batteries for the pick-ups (iirc the pickups won't turn on if you ain't got no batteries or if batteries were running low). Sometimes the battery could last a whole 5/6 song gig, sometimes it didn't. I was always insecure about them batteries running low, and 9V batteries weren't exactly cheap back then lol. So if the young bass player in the vid has no problem with the active pickups and its 9V battery requirements, then the GSR 200 (or 205) is a lot of fun.

Since they're priced similarly I'd pick whatever felt more comfortable. We all have different length arms, sized hands etc and what works for 1 person may not for another. Honestly I don't think you can go wrong with either, even the most basic models seem to be fine.

I did find the Yamaha for $219 in the mango finish. But reviews are saying it might a little thick for people with smaller hands such as me. They recommend the Ibanez in that case. But reading everyone's comments to make my decision.

I know people are saying to go for the longer scale but the only 24-fret bass I own is my first Ibanez bass. For me, I don't think you can go wrong with Ibanez. They are so close to being my favorite instrument maker but there are a few other companies that can't be ignored.

@@progrockjock Yeah keep looking at the Yamaha it sure is pretty. But at $219 it's only $10 less than the Ibanez. The Ibanez does sound much better to me.

I owned ibanez and now own Yamaha and also the older yamaha rbx765a, both the yamaha's to me feel much better. the Ibanez has narrower neck, yamaha has a wider neck, making string spacing better, at least for my hand size. I found the Ibanez just like a guitar rather than bass in its feel. BUT. Never chooses a bass on its loudeness. Go for sound quality, clarity and above all how it feels in the hand. other than that you cant go wrong.

Just saw this Yamaha today. I always get Yamaha even though I can afford better. The most beautiful look, good finish and sound. I usually buy a better pickup later on.

Bought the yamaha a few weeks ago . I wanted a nice looking cheap bass to do a fretless conversion. It played quite well as a fretted bass. The neck was a terrible fit to the body, the amount of slack was unbelievable. I had to glue veneer into the slot to tighten up the fitment of the body and neck. I removed the frets, inserted veneer into the fingerboard, sanded applied superglue to the fretboard, polished etc, fitted some tapewound strings, ditched the bridge and tuners for better gear, did a setup and hey presto, ended up with a kick ass bass. If only yamaha took a bit more care in the quality of making these things they would be a serious peace of kit

I'd probably lean towards Ibanez. I was shocked how good those GSR basses sound. However if he wanted to get into the higher trbx models they are awesome.

You'd better hope it has a bypass switch for the preamp unless you like playing them acoustically... I had a look at Ibanez's site and I can't see that switch yet.

After all the comments and my research, to me the Ibanez sounds much better. But Musician's Friend did contact me and give a very good deal on the Mango Yamaha. I'd save around $40 overall. Normally, I would say Ibanez, without hesitation but I recently purchased an SR506e with muddy sounding Bartolini pickups and ridiculous fret buzz that I missed. Never test out a bass in a parking lot 😉 Now, I would probably say the Yamaha because you can score it for little to nothing BUT only if there isn't any fret buzz. The pickups on that bass are passive, which I find to be a good thing in the mix. Also, the feel of the neck and every fret sounding off perfectly is extremely important. If the frets buzz out, walk away. I don't know anything about Fernandez but I wish I did. In summary, Ibanez basses and guitars (as I'm sure you know) generally play great but the pickups they usually put in their basses are not good, even with a name like Bartolini. Best of luck, man!

The Ibanez GSR200 to give it its proper prefix doesn't have "active" pickups. It has a gimmicky cheap EQ circuit they label Phat II EQ. Ibanez's spin is that it gives an "active bass boost". Anyone with a brain will disable it immediately which involves using a soldering iron. That notwithstanding, the passive pickups in the Yamaha sound better than those in the Ibanez, the Yamaha's BQ & finish is better, and its neck design is superior notably the break angle over the headstock with its assisting it to stay in tune. And the price! No brainer. As usual in 2023 Ibanez is full of 'aren't we so cool' spin whilst Yamaha just quietly delivers the goods with what is clearly a loss leader to attract bass beginners to the brand. I say that owning both Yamaha and Ibanez guitars. IMV, today Ibanez are overpriced, and mediocrity personified until you enter mid-range pricepoint. Someone has to pay for all that celebrity marketing. When I went for my first bass, I checked out both of these amongst others. Bought the Yamaha TRBX174 in RM. Couldn't be happier. It was the smart choice. I like the 174TRBX EW in Tobacco Brown Sunburst too.

Its not about how lows and boast Ibanez sounds with active pickups but how clean and punchy loud that sounds good in songs and live like Yamaha bass does is noticeable through your ears, I would choose Yamaha trbx 174 instead of Ibanez since Ibanez is too much muddy and Irony sound with heavy bass that donot required in any song except metal. It kills the presence of the songs and dominate the rest of the musician thats why I would choose Yamaha trbx 174 obviously. Whether it is passive bass pickup....
