One point that resonated with me with me was the categorization of high-hazard occupancies, particularly the close attention to the types and quantities of hazardous materials. I found it interesting how the code splits hazard levels into subgroups (H1-H5), each with a different safety concern, such as detonation risks in H1 and health hazards in H4. This strict approach makes sure that buildings are designed to endure specific threats while protecting their occupants. The preciseness of these classifications highlights the value of meticulous preparation in hazardous environments.

I agree about how the categorization is interesting when it splits into the subgroups and it is also interesting how it is focused not on the occupancy of the individual but the hazard level. It reminds me of a fire diamond in its organization and it makes the occupancy section stand out in my opinion. It's good that we're placing that amount of care into the safety of individuals when considering occupancy.

I found the breakdown of high-hazard occupancy groups really informative, especially how each subgroup manages specific risks like detonation and health hazards. It was also insightful to see how these classifications impact building design and safety in different settings. My takeaway from this video is how occupancy codes influence architectural requirements across various types of buildings, from hospitals to residential and storage facilities, which was super helpful to learn!

The insights provided by this video resonate deeply with contemporary issues surrounding safety in building occupancy. From what I gathered, these groups determine the level of hazard-particularly concerning high-hazard categories-and subsequently inform the architectural codes associated with hospitals, residential buildings, and storage facilities. This was very useful for grasping the protections associated with these different group types.

Going through the video and realizing how many different "types" of building there are is a little overwhelming but you break the categories down very well in the video. I have been exposed to the code in the past, but finally getting a full view of the major occupancy groups is very helpful because not only does it give me an opportunity to introduce myself to new occupancy groups, but it also reinforced the knowledge I had on the occupancy groups I currently work a lot with - Group R which is residential. I want to note that Accessory Dwelling Units are in the R-3 classification as well even though they are not mentioned in the CBC, but since I do most of my work with ADU's, Remodels, Additions, Alterations, and garage conversions in existing single family homes, most of these fall under the R-3 Clasification.

The video clearly explained the differences between occupancy groups and how letters and numbers relate to specific safety criteria, helping me understand the subgroups for groups H, I, M, R, S and U. I now understand that "H" identifies hazardous buildings. I also found it interesting how Group I is categorized by the occupants' ability to care for themselves in an emergency, or by the number of occupants and the time spent in the facility. Videos like this are really helpful in preparing me for my architecture studies, especially in understanding occupancy classifications.

The video clearly outlined the differences between occupancy groups, explaining how the letters and numbers align with specific safety regulations. It gave me a better understanding of the subgroups within H, I, M, R, S, and U categories. I found it especially interesting that each group had different subgroups making especially specific not leaving any room for loopholes or confusion to make sure everything is categorized correctly.

This video was helpful because it helped me understand the importance of H (Hazard) and its subcategories, At first glance, I didn’t see them as particularly crucial, but after digging deeper, I now understand their importance for ensuring safety. I also appreciate how well-organized and structured these codes are, which makes everything much clearer.

This video explained the occupancy groups H, I, M, R, S, U and their subcategories, especially when it came to differentiating between Group I (institutional) and Group R (residential). I found it useful to understand how safety codes and the number of occupants in a facility influence the classification. The examples you gave about Group H (hazardous materials) were also great, especially with the breakdown of the subcategories H1-H5. It’s nice to see the detailed codes.

As a continuation of the previous video, this one helped further clarify the differences between the 10 occupancy groups. I think it's really cool how you go into detail with explaining the rest of the groups such as H, I, M, R, S, and U. You do a great of breaking the occupancy groups down with the sub groups and referencing the CBC 2022 to show us exactly what it says. I think all of the occupancy groups are equally important but it's good to really take note of the Hazard groups since they represent the hazard levels of the building.

The part of the video that resonated most with me was the section on occupancy with hazardous conditions. I didn't realize there were so many different, hazardous or dangerous conditions that could exist around a building, which in hindsight is a pretty naive mindset. I found it very helpful to show how broad the scope of architecture, codes and construction really is as I have been focused on designing interesting or appealing buildings. The section on occupancy for such conditions made me realize that there are many more conditions to take into consideration when designing not just an environment or terrain.

A point that resonated with me is how residential spaces are categorized based on the specific needs of the occupants. For instance, R1 is primarily about hotels/motels and the regulations take into consideration that the residents are only there temporarily and may not be familiar with the space, so the design must prioritize their safety in case of unexpected emergencies.

This video was quite useful in explaining the complexity of occupancy classifications. I found it amazing how a slight change in the number of occupants can shift categories, such as Group I-1 moving to R4 or R3, and the specific parameters for Group I-3 based on convicts' movement emphasize the significance of safety planning. Understanding these small but important things are critical for good building design; thank you for making such a hard subject more approachable.

This video breaks down the different occupancy groups really well, especially the High Hazard Group H and its subcategories related to hazardous materials. I found it interesting how it differentiates between Institutional Group I and Residential Group R, particularly in terms of the level of care the occupants require. The examples provided, like nursing homes and prisons, helped me grasp the differences between the subgroups I1 to I4. I learned that facilities with over 16 residents can fall under I1, but if there are fewer occupants, they might be classified under R occupancy instead.

In this video I found plenty of new information that I have not learned beforehand. It really talked in depth about topics and classification for the groups of occupancy. One of the groups that stood out to me because I did not know it that much was the H or S category. At first when I was reading about it, it did not seem to be that impactful compared to everything else. Then as I kept understanding it more throughout the video I understood why it made sense.

This video helped me understand the subgroups for groups H, I, R, and S. It is interesting how the subgroups are categized in group I by the abilities of occupants to take care of themselves in an emergency or by the number of occupants and how long they are spent in the facility. And the hazard group is something I need to carefully look over because of how the subgroups are categorized by the quantity and how hazardous the material is. This video was very helpful in describing the differences with each type of occupancy, as well as explaining the differences within the subdivisions as well. Something that stuck with me is the differences and similarities between the residential R Group and the Institutional I group. Although they are different they share a lot of similarities in their categories such as how different types of adult care centers would be in different categories. This is something that I will practice more so I can remember the differences and not get confused.

I like how this video goes into depth about the type of people occupying the space, and how that could possibly increase hazards. For me, the Group I (institutional) picked my brain the most. With my grandparents getting older, my family and I have looked into adult day care and 24 hour care homes, so it is interesting to see the CBC have exact numerical limits that differ the I-subgroups. Such as in group I4; this subgroup deals with buildings holding more than 6 clients for less than 24 hours, whereas group I2 deals with buildings operating MORE than 24 hours.

This video clearly explains check-in groups, highlights the 10 most common types, and uses memorable associations to distinguish them. It breaks down the collection (A) into subgroups (A1 to A5) based on space type, helping viewers understand how occupancy classifications like A, B, E, and F affect building design and use. The video highlights that community colleges are classified as having B occupancy rates, while K-12 schools are classified as having E occupancy rates. Anomalies such as religious classrooms and bookstores have also been clarified. Overall, it emphasizes the importance of careful classification to make complex concepts easy to grasp and remember.

This video helped me learn the different type of occupancy groups and how to assign them in buildings and structures. I wasn't aware that the most utilized groups of occupancy consisted of subgroups. Such as Hazard having H1-H5, and each presenting different hazards like physical, health, or materials. This helped me gain better understanding on why its important to learn how to assign a group as it can affect individuals health or put them in risk. I will definitely look into the different types of material listed in Group H to better understand the pros and cons of them.

I thought this video provided insightful and helpful explanations of the occupancy groups, especially when going in detail of the subgroups for H,I,R, and S groups. It was interesting to learn about the categorization of the high hazard group H that each involve different quantities and types of hazardous materials allowed in a certain area where buildings are designed to withstand potential hazards. It’s important for architects to have a thorough understanding of the types and quantities of hazardous materials that will be present. This knowledge helps in determining the appropriate safety measures and building features required in order to protect occupants in the building.

When answering the question at the very end I found myself a bit lost. I knew it would be residential but each specific description wouldn't exactly match what the question was asking for. I couldn't find "100 dwellings" in any of them, but then I realized, they didn't always run by a maximum number of dwellings, and R2 specifies that it is for 2 or more dwellings, such as hotels and dormitories. Those examples helped me put together that 100 dwellings is technically more than 2, which meant it was included in R2 occupancy classification.

It's really interesting to see why the occupancy groups have been categorized the way they are. For example, residential being classified that way because people are sleeping in these buildings makes perfect sense but I wouldn't have thought of that initially. I learned that there is an Occupancy group for buildings that handle hazardous materials in excessive quantities. H1 includes detonation hazard, H2 is accelerated burning, H3 deals with buildings and structures supporting hazardous material , H4 is health hazards and H5 deals with the production of hazardous materials. The institutional occupancy subgroups are sorted based on the occupants' ability to take care of themselves in the case of an emergency. This isn't something I had previously considered would be an occupancy type, but I think it is very important since some people would need more help. I thought it was interesting how I3 consisted of places such as a jail where the occupants are detained, but I2 is places such as hospitals where occupants may be injured. Both groups are for occupants in different situations, but I appreciate that the building code takes into account everyone's safety, including those who need extra assistance in the event of an emergency.

Within the different occupancy types covered in the video there were some that stood out to me the most. Some being both Institutional and Residential, because before watching this video and learning about occupancy types I would assume that anything related to residential would follow under the R type yet within the I type group I1 it states "if more than 16 people who are living supervision in a residential environment on a 24-hour basis", yet by knowing these is that we as architecture students and those who are architects can differentiate them and other occupancy types to further limit errors as well as casuing financial setbacks.

An interesting point I found in the video was that dry cell batteries are classified in the S-2 group, which includes non-combustible materials. This video amazed me, at some point, I was getting overwhelmed how many subgroups a group has. It’s such an important topic as a designer, due to keeping everyone's life safe. I believed hazards were considered one group only, yet this video taught me how there’s subgroups that distinguish different scenarios and materials. For example, High-hazard Group H-3, takes care of structures and buildings that contain composition and physical hazards while Group H-4 focuses on health hazards in a structure and building such as toxic materials. As future architects, this is a crucial lesson, one must learn and carefully assign occupancy groups to avoid conflicts.

Something interesting about these occupancy types is that the Insititutional category can encompass so many different types of facilites. Conceptualizing inmates as inhibited or in need of supervision in a way that parallels care homes for elders or patients in hospitals speaks to an interesting view of what it means to be 'self sufficient' and what spaces exist to aid people who aren't deemed as such.

Group I-3 was particularly interesting to me because it covers high-security areas, and I have always wondered how they determine occupancy for places like jails, where there are lots of people in a confined space.

This video helped me further understand how occupancy is categorized and the organizing system that is used to identify the groups. I like the method of using letters and numbers to identify which level the building is classified as. An example of this is H1 meaning it is hazardous and has a detonation risk while a building that is considered H2 is at risk of accelerated burning. Overall the video was interesting to learn from.

The video helped explain each occupancy type and classify it with real world buildings, which sometimes only differ slightly but require vastly different occupancy types. This stringency helps maintain order within safety codes primarily for fire response, and helps designate hazardous buildings to zoning away from public and residential spaces.

It's very interesting to learn all about the different sub categories, especially about the institutional group I-3, which includes detention facilities and jails and how that is separate from I-2 (hospitals, nursing homes etc) as they can not respond to emergencies because of physical reasons but due to security measures and them being detained. I also didn’t realize there’s a specific category for storage, and that S1 and S2 are based on whether the products are combustible or not.

This video was also helpful when talking about the remainder of the occupancy types. The residential type seemed easy to understand because it was for sleeping purposes but the part of hotels/motels having different codes due to people being unfamiliar with the building was interesting. Some of the other categories seemed pretty straightforward like institutional and mercantile but I might need to review the subcategories to fully understand all the information and separations.

One point that resonated with me was how the abilities of an individual responding to an emergency with or without assistance dictates what group is categorized as. Specifically the Institutional Group I. I also did not consider that the categorization of a prison was dependent on the nature and abilities of freedom of images/occupants. I assumed that because the space is a facility with institutionalized sets of rules would be the deciding factor. It was mentioned in the video that prisons on its own are subdivided into nine conditions based on freedom of movement inside a facility. I am interested to see what the different levels entail.

A point that resonated with me in the video is the emphasis on the high hazard (H) occupancy classifications and their critical role in ensuring safety in buildings that contain dangerous materials. The classification of high hazard occupancies into five subgroups (H1 through H5) reflects the need for strict regulations based on the nature and quantity of hazardous materials, such as flammable liquids and toxic substances. This careful categorization is essential not only for compliance with safety codes but also for minimizing risks to public health and safety. By understanding these classifications, architects and designers can implement appropriate safety measures and design strategies, ultimately safeguarding occupants and the surrounding community from potential hazards associated with high-risk materials.

This video was extremely beneficial in separating the different occupancy groupings. from group H-U. One thing that I understood from this video was thee importance of specific numbers. For instance, the number of kids a daycare facility might have could change the first level grouping completely, from one letter to another. The groupings are very specific, and I believe it important to look for such details when trying to categorize a building into a grouping.

I found it interesting to learn how the high hazard group H is categorized based on the types and amounts of hazardous materials permitted in a space. I also think that it was interesting to learn that there are some classifications that differ based on small details or minor changes. For example, 1 occupant can change a group from E to R3.

I find it interesting how Residential Group R and Group I are divided, especially the difference between people who can help themselves in an emergency and people who need help because they are physically disabled or have limited freedom. Group R/3 includes a lot of homes in the suburbs, while Group R/2 includes flats. It's also interesting how the dangerous materials are grouped: Group H is for dangerous materials and Group S is for non-hazardous keeping. It's interesting how specific these usage groups are, especially when it comes to telling the difference between health and physical hazard, which often go hand in hand.

Occupancy groups H and I seem to require a lot of research into the codes to avoid the incorrect category. As stated in the previous video, it is very crucial to go through and evaluate the entire code because once you're in the section, it provides enough detail to help with any questions that can be pending. Also, taking a look at the table in section 307.1 was easier to understand once you have it in front of you and how the table breaks down the quantities of materials.

I found the hazard groups particularly interesting. It makes sense to have different subcategories, for example H1 classifying detonation hazards and H2 classifying flammable hazards. Before, I would have thought they would have H without subcategories and just label everything that falls under as a general hazard to public safety, but it makes sense to have more specific explanations.

The video was super helpful and clear about the different occupancy groups. From my understanding, these groups regulate the Hazard (which talks about the high-Hazard groups), then lead more into the architectural codes (based on hospital insinuations, as well as residential and storage). This was super helpful when it comes to understanding the protection that comes into play with these group types.

After watching this video I would say that between part 1 and part 2 the occupancy groups that really caught my attention was group H and group R. Group H has a lot of subgroups that need to be covered, and I think that it has more due to the fact that when designing this is the number one thing that needs to be looked at many times. As for group R I wouldn't have thought that there were subgroups for the residential group.

I find it very interesting how residential group R and group I are categorized. Important to make the distinction between the people who can and are capable of helping themselves in an emergency and those who need assistance. Whether that assistance entails restricted Liberty, or physical disability. From my understanding, R/3 seems to be the most common when considering suburbia and R2 is apartments. The method of storage for hazardous materials is also intriguing as Group H is its own thing compared to Group S which is for nonhazardous materials and the difference between combustible and non-combustible storage and code

The institutional and residential were not as appealing as the storage and hazardous groups. I liked these ones more just because of my association with hazardous, that sort of category intrigues me, and learning some of the specific hazardous spaces in designing was interesting. It was weird to think of a barn as a storage/hazardous space but it definitely makes sense. H1-5 were really good to know because these are the occupancies you have to pay the most attention to since they can cause severe issues like combustion, ignition, explosiveness, toxic materials that lead to health issues,

What stood out in this video was the residential categorization. I seems obvious that a residential space would involve a place for someone to sleep, however, the distinction between how many units there are and how often users stay there seems like it can get fuzzy when trying to distinguish what a project is. It can take only one person to change a project from one category to another.

This video was helpful in breaking down the rest of the occupancy types and how each group covers a specific type of building based on its use. It's interesting that so much detail goes to categorizing buildings. For example, occupancy type R, is for sleeping purposes but there are four groups based on the number of occupants and whether they are transient or permanent. These groups are very specific which is understandable as they are based on the safety of the occupants.

Talking more about the codes by their letters is really interesting to me because now I am learning about the H codes. I wonder why I was never told about this when learning a bit about occupancy codes because I felt it is very important to understand why we have different codes for the different types of hazards such as toxic materials and flammable hazards. However the one I really enjoyed being informed on for the occupancy codes was code R. As someone who finds enjoyment in almost anything residential related, it was nice to know that motels, hotels are made for people to feel comfortable and understand that they are in a new environment so they are made to be created in a way of comfort. Also it is nice to know that these rooms are made to be simple and understanding that the occupant in the room can understand what and where everything is as they are going to be staying in that room for some time.

A point that was intersting to me was the way the specific occupancies are grouped. More so how each code has a different hazard that it was classidfied by. For example Group H-3 was focused on materials that were a physical hazard. For Group H-4 the materials were a health hazard rather than a physical one. The different levels within each occupancy show how each building is designed to meet each requirement based off the use and purpopse of it.

This video is incredibly helpful, and I wish I had known this information sooner. While I understand that the codes can be overwhelming for incoming architects, I think it would be beneficial to be provided with a general overview of key codes-beyond just general safety, like egress and proportional circulation for ADA compliance. These considerations significantly impact design and can actually enhance it, making it more realistic and providing a better understanding of the overall process.

The most resonating part of this video was how certain categories can start to balance a thin line between each other as well how certain buildings fall under the same categories. For example, it was interesting to see that prisons and daycares fall under the same institution category and are only one category away from each other. On top of that, it was also interesting to see that an R3 residence could also qualify as a childcare business as long as the amount of children in the day care fall within the parameters of the R3 categories.

The question at the end truly made me go back through the video and think about how I would classify a 100 dwelling unit building. The question then raises one more: Are the expected residents meant to be transient or non-transient? A dwelling constitutes the assumption of a residential classification, however then the line begins to blur. R1 and R2 would both be suitable classes for this building, however there remains a clear distinction between the two and that is the transient or non-transient state of its residents. It makes me wonder how discrepancies like these might be solved in the workplace. Would a firm simply design with whichever classification is the strictest?

Overall, the quality and information in the video is very impressive and has definitely become a video I will constantly come back to in order to study for future assignments. I've learned in depth the different groups such as group "H," which would be the most interesting group due to how detailed hazards can become, creating specific codes for buildings depending on their occupancy and safety concerns. I do agree with what you said about the highly-toxic materials and toxic materials, it is pretty funny seeing how there are two forms of toxic materials even though any toxic material seems very dangerous.

I think it's kind of interesting that there's no specific group for buildings like agriculture or stables for livestock, and that they're just put in with other miscellaneous structures. I wonder if this is partly because they might be semi-outdoor structures? I like that this video makes all of the subcategories for each group clear though, especially when it comes to knowing what what type of building can deal with things that are dangerous, like hazardous material or criminals. Having these categories is important for everyone's safety.

The institutional category was the most intriguing category during this part. It was very interesting how the grade is determined by how the users can respond to an emergency in time. What made it more layered is that category I2 responds to how the occupants cannot respond to an emergency without help form staff like hospitals and nursing homes. While the I3 category, the users cannot respond to emergencies because of their incarceration and being under security measures.

One point that stood out to me was about the occupancy group U. There are some question that came up to my mind as, can group U buildings be part of mixed-occupancy buildings? These buildings are typically not intended for long-term human habitation and often serve functional or supportive purposes on a property so it's a type of building that you don't see often and that's what made me interested in this group.
@sarqeles

Mixed occupancies can be any combination as long as its allowed by code and you meet all the requirements. Notice the types of structures in a U occupancy. Code writers cannot possibly create every type of code group or it would be pages long. Combining the groups according to similar life safety requirements is the goal and as long as its a mixed occupancy and you can prove you meet things like area, height, stories and how you choose to treat that U occupancy, you can combine with other occupancy types.

this video was very helpful, there is a lot of important information and I find it somewhat difficult to remember what specific number of occupants will change the occupancy type. For example for group I-1 where people can respond to emergencies on their own yet if there are less than 16 occupants then it can also fall into R4 occupancy and if there are less than 5 it can fall into R3 occupancy. I also found it very interesting how you mentioned that group I3 is divided into 9 conditions in the CBC based on how much a prisoner can move within their cell and can become capable of self preservation.

I completely agree with your observations about the video. It does a great job of highlighting the complexity of occupancy classifications, especially how a slight change in the number of occupants can shift categories, like with Group I-1 transitioning to R4 or R3. This detail really emphasizes the importance of understanding these nuances for effective building design and safety planning. I also found the division of Group I-3 into nine conditions, particularly intriguing; it underscores how critical it is to consider individual circumstances in determining safety measures.

Great Video! I know this may sound strange but I never really thought that the definition of a residential was a place to sleep. I know it seems obvious but I thought it was related to where people live and their place of security. But it makes sense that the main distinguishing factor is "Is this person sleeping there or not?" Meaning there is a similar code between hotels and regular houses. That little definition was quite clarifying.
