One point that resonated with me was the significance of understanding occupancy classifications concerning safety and design choices. This video discusses how different types of occupancy, such as residential versus educational, have distinct ramifications for building codes, eventually affecting life safety measures and structural design. This emphasizes the need for correct classification, which can determine not just a building's maximum allowable area but also the fire resistance ratings required for safety features. By mastering these classifications, architects and builders can ensure that their designs not only exceed regulatory requirements but also provide safe and functional environments for their occupants.

One of the things that stood out the most to me was how the various occupancies would flow into other groups, such how a college classroom moves from a E group to a B group. With this I find it fascinating how each of the occupancies will all work together in order to bring about the safety and wellbeing of the population that the building serves.

This video effectively clarified how occupancy classifications are tied to both design and safety regulations. The way you broke down practice questions was particularly useful in understanding where to look in the codebook for specific guidelines, like how occupancy loads differ based on building type or how egress requirements change depending on the group (A, B, R, etc.).

I think the best part about the way these questions were answered is that it didn't just simply provide an answer, it provided instructions on how to go about finding the answer. Not only that, but it helped show how to think like a person who is proficient at finding codes, as it showed how to break down the question and how to think about the answer beyond the information given. For example, I appreciated the way question 3 was broken up into two parts. The first part was looking though the IBC website to find the information that the question referenced but didn't provide, and the second part was solving the question using that new found information.

This video effectively simplifies the process of navigating building codes and conditions. By breaking down issues and highlighting key details, it guides users through the extensive California Building Code (CBC), revealing the process of identifying occupancy groups and classifying them. The inclusion of tools such as UpCodes and practical ways to navigate CBC makes the process seem much easier than expected, underscoring the importance of understanding the 10 key check-in groups. Practical issues emphasize the need to first determine the correct classification of use, as this affects building design, safety requirements, and permitted use. Overall, the video successfully reduces the complexity of building codes and demonstrates their importance in ensuring safety. Practical questions and explanations turn code navigation into a puzzle that, while challenging, keeps people safe in the built environment. Thank you very much!

This video helped me understand a lot of the subtle details, like the type of building, the number of people in it, how to assign the right occupancy category, and how these codes are essential for keeping buildings and people safe. It's important to know that occupancy categories depend on how the building is used and what goes on there. If you don't categorize a building correctly, it can lead to some pretty serious problems. These can even result in injuries or deaths, or they can lead to legal issues.

Again, your demonstration was very direct and practical, and it allowed me to peek into a window of what I would do in the future.

Obviously, occupancy has a huge impact on design, and understanding what spaces will be used for what is an important first step that way we can identify the specific codes with each type of occupancy. This was a topic in the previous videos where we learned the design process and when exactly we should start thinking about what, and in this video, the part I liked was skimming through the code's tabs. This is a new skill we all have yet to master, so actually seeing you do it while you explain your thought process is what I liked most about this video.

In the video, I really liked how each question was regarding the website on how to find those certain codes. The different types of occupancies on how it would switch from an A3 to a B, can become a huge factor in design switching especially to safety. For example, the last question talks about fire resistance, how to find a fire rating for a firewall, and how much supervision there will be if there are 8 occupants. Looking under the website helps tell how long the firewall could last (3 hours) but then will also tell you about the rating for the fire resistance. The website really helps in regards to understanding the change in code design. :)

After the first two videos and getting a better understanding on the topic of occupancy groups it is clear; with these practice questions I am glad to have seen real life questions and situations one would have to deal with as a building professional. The last two questions especially stood out to me and really made me think and connect previous understanding such as building area, fire resistance, and more together. I think codes in general are pretty intimidating but after these solve alongs it became less intimidating and interesting, it is like a puzzle or a maze, but serves a good outcome, peoples safety.

While searching for key terms can guide you to the right section of the code, I love how the concept of occupancy often comes down to common sense - to a degree, esp. with an understanding of building systems (in my opinion). That said, when the information is fresh in your mind, it helps you solve questions much more quickly. Having the information from the previous videos fresh in my mind gave me the confidence to assess the details without needing to rely solely on searches. However, the insight into sifting through the code was very insightful.

Based on the video I feel I have a clear understanding of how to distinguish different structures into groups and categories. Feel I am more prepared to navigate knowing occupancy classifications based on what was taught. What's stuck with me with all three parts of the videos was how detailed and organized the codes are. The astonishing how essentially all factors have been considered, organized, and categorized to ensure maximum safety and preservation of life. Codes can be incredibly overwhelming but knowing that there are steps we can follow makes it less daunting.

It is probably most surprising how well documented the code has become to be. This was especially show in the last two questions but mainly in the third practice question where the transition of spaces was introduced and what the capabilities of retrofitting and existing building were in the context of codes. Being able to have that reference in such a specific and niche scenario shows how much the code has been developed and the breadth as to the topics it covers as a whole.

This video really helped to navigate through the subchapters of the CBC, specifically chapter 3. It was actually seemingly easy to find what you need if you carefully read through the main and subgroup titles. It always starts broad, then narrows down to a specific point that you are looking for.

The practice questions make me understand more about those occupancies, and they are kind of examples of real-life situation, and This video is helping me to find what is given and what is looking for step-by-step, which is a nice way for solving these word problems that can drive me crazy. Every time when I'm doing a word problem, sometimes it's easy to see what I should look for, but the conditions given is not that clear to me. Also, like the 4th question, if it doesn't specify the type of construction, we can just simply write down 3-hour wall.

This video was extremely useful in simplifying the process of navigating codes and conditions that initially seemed overwhelming and difficult to interpret. I really appreciated the approach of breaking down the question, pinpointing what it was asking, and recognizing the key details that serve as clues to help us sift through the many codes we need to review. One aspect I've found particularly interesting in this class is the way math plays a role in understanding these concepts.

I really like that your video has examples and practice questions. It’s one thing to explain how to categorize buildings but it’s especially helpful to be able to put it into practice. Also it’s nice to see how the type of occupancy affects the design requirements. I think it’s very important to design based more on the building type and needs rather than aesthetics.

These practice questions were very helpful for understanding these topics and I really enjoyed question 3 and 4 for applying the things we learned. Referencing the codebook in question 3 gave me a good idea how to apply these topics and classification to a project rather that just a way of categorizing each building. Question 4 did the same thing referencing different codes in the code book that would be helpful for applying it to my own projects.

These video series were really helpful in helping me understand occupancy types and the practice questions helped me better understand how they are used in real life. At first, looking at the questions was a bit intimidating, but as you break down each question, it gets easier to understand how and where to find the relevant information to answer each question.

This video was incredibly helpful in breaking down and understanding how to navigate codes and conditions that at first glance feel very overwhelming to decipher. I appreciated the methods of picking apart the question, identifying what the question was looking for, and identifying the details that serve as clues for us to find in the many codes we have to search through. Something that I have been finding interesting in this class is how math is involved in figuring out code specifications.

At the start of this video, I was nervous for the questions, but I really enjoyed how we broke down each question to understand what exactly we were trying to find out. This video was very helpful in knowing how to answer the questions and how to use the IBC to find those answers. At the end of the video, I felt more confident in the material and really felt that this practice helped further establish the knowledge we learned in parts 1 and 2.

This video helped breakdown the process of navigating and knowing what and where to look for when classifying an occupancy of a building. This helps understand the different safety requirement of each building depending of their usage to unsure to safety of users as much as possible. It's interesting how all these codes exist to unsure safety and while there are so many requirements and classifications, websites like these make is less overwhelming to understand.

I liked that this video included practice questions that helped put into perspective the importance of the correct occupancy group. The occupancy group directly relates to the building's allowable use and inturn it's safety features, if a building is classified incorrectly or an occupancy group is somehow mixed up, then the entire building is in danger of failing in the event of an emergency. I think this will effect the design choices I make later on in my studio designs and I'll consider these factors when designing.

I think this video was very integral in really understanding building occupation and how to classify differnent buidlings based on a very simple description. it's important that from the description we disect the keywords and then come to a conclusion of what the building is classified as based on the buidling code. It also puts into perspective how imperative it is that we know each occupancy classification so that we determine what classification our building is for if we design one in the future. I also think that this video was helpful for preparing us for when we are going to be tested on these classifications for our license if we choose to pursue it

This video was very helpful in learning how to utilize the CBC in order to figure out certain occupancy requirements. The website used in the video, UpCodes, as well as the tutorial on how to figure out occupancy groups and classifications made it really simple and easy to learn. Beforehand, I had expected the CBC to be really long and difficult to understand, but this video justifies that it isn't that hard, as long as you are aware of the ten different groups. It was also made evident how helpful it is to remember the ten occupancy groups when trying to figure out the practice questions.

I wanted to point out how awesome it is you’ve not only provided definitions but also put it into practice, by doing so it enhanced my understanding. Breaking down the questions, finding out these key words to act like a guide to find the answer in the code. Especially earlier I thought group 3 was dealing with all educational group but now I know it is k-12. Collage classroom, and everything else above 12th grade is classified as Group B!

I found this video to be the most helpful because it includes practice questions that emphasize the importance of correctly identifying occupancy groups. It made understanding and looking up codes, chapters, and tables much simpler by breaking down how occupancy classifications directly relate to a building's safety features. This new understanding will influence my future design choices in studio projects, as I'll be more mindful of these factors when planning and ensuring compliance with safety codes.

This video help me understand the further specifics of using codes. Overall, this was a good check to see if I absorbed the details of videos one and two (which I will likely need to reference now and again). The main thing I took away from this video is that there are a lot of factors that go into construction (materials, occupancy, fire rating, etc) and codes provide an organized method of finding such details.
