You nailed it. This is why I don't bring in my Ryobi impact gun or sawzall, even though I prefer them over the company provided tools. I finish my apprenticeship in 2 months. IBEW Local 291. Being in a right-to-work state, I see more non-union guys and gals around here. Union is the way to go, whether you're an electrician, plumber, carpenter, etc. I try to do my part in helping people see the benefits of going Union. Those who make the switch usually only regret that they didn't do it sooner. Stay safe out there, everybody.

my local has a journeyman tool list, and when you join the apprentiship they give you a smaller version of that journeyman tool list. the idea is that throughout your apprentiship (5 years) you can aquire the remaining tools on the journeyman tool list. Also you are allowed to have 100 dollars worth of tools "NOT" above and beyond the journeyman tool list excluding anything the employer is supposed to provide. this allows for you to get some smaller hand tools that you like or prefer to use. there are times that the union seems like a profit machine, however the union is right there by your side fighting for better working conditions, pay, and a plethora of other things for the members. IBEW 340 has been a great place to be i will always be thankful for my time there.

Thanks for posting this video. I've been thinking about joining my local for a while now. I talked to the recruiter a year ago, and he mentioned that I only need basic tools, but wouldn't tell me what those tools are. I've been a non-union electrician for 15 years. I have a lot of tools. It's hard for me to wrap my head around things like, don't bring a multi meter. Have to have a hacksaw. What would I even use an awel for? I buy tools to make my life easier. Band saw, M12 cable cutter, M18 knockout kit (1/2" to 4"). Thousands of dollars in tools making half what a union guy makes, and I'm only required to bring maybe a couple hundred dollars worth?? I started in the trade when I was 20, and I'm 35 now. I don't even break $50k a year, I have expensive healthcare just for myself, I can't afford to cover my kids (my ex wife has them insured), and I have no retirement to speak of. I can't even begin to imagine how much different my life would be now if I had joined the union then...

What area are you in? I am with Local 46 Seattle. We have calls going through all the books. What that means is, book 1 is for everyone in local 46, book 2 is travelers from other locals, book three is non union journeyman electricians and book 4 is just anyone off the street. I am not sure how well a book 4 does or lasts on a job but my point is that if you came to this area, I am certain that you would be working on a job within a day or two. The current rate for a journey wireman is $62/hr. You may want to call our hall to find out about working with an out of state license. You might be able to work for a bit of time while you wait to take the state test here. Let me know if you want more info. I would be glad to help.

Thanks for watching and commenting, Robert! The tool list there might be slightly different than the list here, but I'd assume that it will be pretty similar. As far as the awl goes, I've never really used it. It's meant to basically be used like a center punch though. I'd imagine that it would be pretty weird from going from having a whole collection of power tools and other specialty tools that you're purchased that you're used to and then to switch from only needing to bring basic tools and to rely of your company for the rest. In my experience, it's been really nice, and if I've ever needed something then I just mention it to my general foreman and he gets it for us to use. Of course, your experience will vary from company to company, even with the IBEW. I hate to say it, but I don't even have my own multimeter 😂 From day 1 I've always just used a Fluke 117 that my employer gave me to use. It's essentially my meter as nobody else uses it and I keep it with my tools though. 35 is still very young and if you think that you and your family could benefit from joining then I would highly recommend looking into it further. If you haven't already seen it, you might find my video "Why IBEW?" to be helpful. No matter what though, regardless of what I say or anyone else says, you know what will be best for you and your family. ⚡️

Thanks for the video. The IBEW is not strong here in Texas. The IEC has been, but we mostly have independant contractors. I am an electrical contractor in the industrial sector, and we have worked on very large projects along with union shops, and it is two very different worlds, and approaches. I never knew y'all had a list of tools you couldn't bring with you on the job-site. Most electrical contractors supply everything except for your personal hand tools, but you can bring whatever tools you want. Also, the comments I read about the guys having the best personal tools getting to stay and not get layed off...not a thing...your personal tools are non issue when determining who stays or goes. Never heard of that concept in 35 years in the trade.

The not list is also to make it fair between workers, example.. we will hire worker A because he has his own bender and band saw, Worker B doesn't. thats why we have a tool list. To keep it equal between workers.

IBEW loca 11 in Los Ángeles isn’t like that. Every apprentice gets a tool list and starts as a green, experience or not. You still do the 5 years and journey out. Only exception is if you can prove the work hours you can be organized in as a journeyman or foreman. Again, with proof of work hours for whichever title.

My job provides each technician with the tools they need for the job and will replace any of your privately owned tools if broken on the job. They also will replace any broken company owned tool and they urge you to buy any tool or supplies you need to get the job done, on the company card.

Want to learn all aspects of the trade not just labor join another ibew that's my honest advice. I don't recommend local 11. Especially if you are going in as an apprentice. Other locals have a tighter knit with their members not 11. Local 11 will withhold your next pay grade whenever they get a chance. You are cheap labor and they try their best to keep it that way (as an apprentice). (don't sneeze too loud or you'll get a withhold, it is rediculously bad.- And I wouldn't even mention this if it wasn't for the fact that they cannot hold their end of responsibilities, not even close, compared to how much they ask from their members. With zero repercussions regardless of how many people have gotten screwed over with that same issue) And it's not just sparky jr's who have gotten the shorter end of a stick but j-dubs too. I've met good journeyman who have been discouraged from staying in the union because of the ambiance that comes with this specific local. They are great journeyman and foreman who are greatly respected by those who work with them so it's sad to see the higher ups treat them as dispensable escape goats and the union not having their backs when they needed it the most. If you are the "shoppy" type that has connections already in a company or two, who can probably get away with a mediocre work ethic, then you'll probably be just fine. And I get shoppies they have job security and options on the backs of true hard workers- doing the work that must be done but nobody else wants to do. But I digress. I wasn't that type though, I was a just a put me where you need me, no BS, let my work speak for itself, no gossip hard worker that had zero experience coming in. Did DC work/underground, the most labor intensive work you'll have as an inside wireman, for most of my time in the local. And don't get me started on the label of "disadvantage worker" "hall rats" or how people are getting robbed of their own money for retirement as an example. But if you want to know, let me know and I'll tell you. Food for thought here... There is a reason why joining local 11 is much easier then joining any other ibew. Why do you think that is? Size..true but a small variable out of the the whole equation. Think about the business/money aspect of it all and you'll probably just catch a fraction of a glimpse of the tip of the iceberg. To be completely honest I just wish I had known what I know now about local 11 so I could have made an informed decision prior. I am glad of what I have learned and the good people i have had the opportunity to meet. I would have just played my cards differently from the get go. I understand that business is business but the problem is the secrecy. Everyone should know what they are getting into that is all.

Damn I’m 25 our contractors provide wrenches, sockets, and Allen keys on each job - not that everyone doesn’t have their own of these items - but our tool list is much smaller and outdated as it includes a stick ruler and a plumb Bob LOL. We did get a full set in our apprentice class. And yea, anything powered is provided by the contractor for each job, some have even given me my own set :)

I'm a 2 yr apprentice in a non-union company and i've spent close to $7,000 in tools. Everything from hand tools, power tools, testers, Knockout kits, benders of all sizes. But when it comes to lay offs and the company has to downsize, I'm never laid off. Unfortunely thats how it is, you wanna keep working? Bring your everything, at that point, your more useful then they guy who just brought a few hand tools and thats it.

@@MadElectrician I'm ok with it no problem. The apprenticeship is going great. I love doing electrical work, it's a great experience. But you definitely notice that the amount of work available seems to be seasonal. We're busier than ever during the summer and on a hiring spree but in the middle of winter work is slow and the company downsizes it tries to keep it's most valuable employees and lay off the rest. And then summer comes again, hiring comes again. You see people come and go. Some companies will actually use each other's employees to keep an employee hours up. Like if we're busy and another company is struggling to find work, they can send guys to our jobsites and vice versa. I never seen anywhere else but in the tradea

The 'Shall Not Furnish' list is interesting. Not having to shell out for power tools is a major savings. On the other hand, what brand of multimeter are they providing? If it's Fluke or Klein (made by Fluke) or a few other brands that are known high quality, then fine. If they are some off brand piece of Chinesium crap, then no way am I trusting my life to them. That might be the one item I'd purchase, list or no list.

Residential is really gonna get have more swings in it. Commercial and industrial is often steady even in a downturn because work has been planned out for a long time and is scheduled for a set time frame and the money has already been spent. Switching classifications shouldn't be a problem but be aware some locals only provide representation for certain classifications. For example local 666 doesn't represent linemen, residential, or data/phone techs in central Virginia.

It's always so awesome to see all of the personal insight from people in the comment section. Thanks for chiming in and helping answer questions everyone. I personally think that being an inside wireman is the most lucrative and probably has the most work (generally speaking). From personal experience, I've seen sound/ com workers have lots of slow times while we (inside wiremen) continue to be very busy. Residential is cool do, but if you have an inside wireman license then you're able to do any electrical work, including residential, anyways. Plus, there are so many different types of things that you can do as a commercial/ industrial inside wireman that in my option it's probably a lot more interesting as there are always new things to learn. You can definitely switch from one to the other, but I think that if your goal is to become an inside wireman that you should probably just start with that. It can be tricky with some locals to switch, but it is possible. I know here you actually have to reinterview for the other license that you want to pursue, and then you will also need to take the required classes through the training center. This might mean that you could be already finished with your apprenticeship as a residential electrician, but then you have to go back to school for a couple more years to finish the additional schooling to become an inside wireman. Don't knock maintenance either. There's ALWAYS something to learn. During my time with the IBEW it was only construction gigs being offered (actually my old local just got everything shut down for corruption like a year ago. kind of explains why they weren't respected by any of the members of different locals I've ever worked with), but if they give you a chance to do maintenance at a plant somewhere I'd say jump on it. you'll always have control schemes to pick your way through and if you get a good rapport with some of the other trades then they'll help you out, you can help them out, offering lots of opportunities to learn about instrumentation or mechanical or networks and automation. I've worked on construction jobs through Canada and the US, and I've done maintenance in both countries as well (journeyman certifications in both - EE98J in NM and RSE Electrician in Canada) and I'd only go back to construction if I had no choice (or was looking for a side gig to make some extra cash or do favors for family and friends). though doing that you will likely be expected to have some different gear than is on that tool list lol. you may need to spend some extra time in school to stand out from the other job applicants, but the perks are worth it and the education and experience is something you can't misplace.

That's understandable. I agree, that wouldn't be very efficient. At my work, our company provides everyone with their own individual full set up Milwaukee/ dewalt power tools (drill, impact, ports-band, and sawsall). We also have our own individual set up benders and everything else too. The only things that we really share are things like root hammers and ramsets.

I love my IBEW, don't get me wrong. I've been in the trade for 40 years, so I have a tool for just about anything. But I've found that the guys who cry the loudest about journeyman bringing tools to the job are the first ones to ask if they can borrow that tool if it makes their job easier. And I'm talking about hand tools like ratchet cutters; not power tools. I would never bring a power tool on a job. Stay safe, brothers.

An 18v fuel milwaukee impact for general electrical tasks is like driving finish nails with a 22oz framing hammer.

So sorry your conditioned to be a slave to your contractor. They tell you you do what we say or you'll be off work for months to years. Again it is who you know in our local not what you know. Work in a real local and everyone gets layed off at end of job.

@@SparkysJourney Will do! No, I wouldn't worry about asking for permission to make your videos. The only reason I'm asking is because I want to film my video at the training center with a brand new box of unopened tools rather than showing the tools that they've already given me. I have a big list of videos that I'm really excited to do at some point that would involve the training center, so I'm waiting to see what they say about all of those too. Everyone I've talked to (instructors and organizers) have been really excited about my channel, but I'm specifically reaching out the our training center director for permission just to cover all of my bases. Will do, that would be super cool. Right on bro. Can't wait to see more! ⚡️

I don't think I've ever used mine on the job. Couldn't even find mine to make this video 🤦🏽‍♂️ I know it's somewhere, just not entirely sure where.. Everyone has their own powered Milwaukee porta-bands at my work along with their own set of power tools provided by our company.

while i used a metal tape measure it is NOT a good idea especially in a closet a 6ft wood rule is best i prefer the 8 ft stick .. you will almost never need a cresant wrench. especially if you have good pump pliers and nut drivers. a punch as well is almost never used. it has one purpose to make a starting point for drilling... a steady hand will do fine. as for a hammer . there is little you will need to hammer you couldnt use your side cutters for. when your practiced you wont need a skinners either

I actually find it really odd that gloves are on our required tools list. I've never worked somewhere where gloves weren't provided by the contractor along with all other PPE despite them being on our required list.

I'm so glad I don't have to deal with union bullshit like what kind of tool I can and can't bring to work. Whenever something doesn't make sense and they try to explain it with "we're doing this to protect you" you should run for this hills. Unions really should go the way of the dodo. I will admit, they did have a time and a place, back before windows 95....
