I've been growing my hops on a clothesline. I built a crossbar with 12" eye bolts sticking up to run the twine above the clothesline and screw the crossbar to the clothesline crosspiece. It is easy to put up in spring and take down in fall and my wife still gets to use the line for clothes (her one demand). I plan to upgrade to a more formal system next year and this looks like a great system to consider. I grow Chinook like crazy, Tettnang, Mt Hood, and Northern Brewer. From Indiana.

Going the extra mile for your viewers! Way to go! Im in the Pacific Northwest growing Centennial, Mt. Hood and Golding hops. This will be my 3rd year so I hope the crop comes in strong. This might sound silly but make sure you label each hop plant with something that will stand up to the weather because once the rain washes off your sign I doubt you could tell which one is which. Lol! Also hops grown in the ground will grow better than those in a planter or half barrel. Great video!

I have Cascade, Centennial, Columbus, and Magnum here in Colorado. I started two years ago; now in my second year, they have really taken off. The cascade are doing particularly well, they are producing as many cones on their own as the other three combined. One comment on your video though, hops love water, definitely water them more than once every few days. I water mine every day, for 10 minutes in the morning and 10 minutes in the evening.

I live in Indiana close to Lafayette and I currently have chinook cluster and comet hops growing. this is their second year. I am wanting to start centennial and cascade as well. I bought a small 8 foot gazebo off amazon for like 125 shipped last year and I have the hops growing on that.

I've been aiming towards gruit beer partly because hops are so expensive. Maybe down the road this will be an option for me
@ShortCircuitedBrewers4 жыл бұрын
I've wanted to try that myself. What do you use in yours?
@prairiedogs0014 жыл бұрын
@@ShortCircuitedBrewers I'm just getting started, so the only one I've done so far uses sarsaparilla and mugwort. It's strange because the bitterness has a different character and it ended up with a wine-like dryness. I'm planning a coconut "coffee" Porter using chicory, licorice, and possibly mugwort again. Eventually I plan to grow my own stuff for it. What got me interested in gruit beer is the ability to tailor it towards certain health aspects via the herbs used. I'm also learning that the preservative effect need is highly dependent on how long you intend to store a beer. It's a fun journey, but definitely some trial and error. There's a lot less credible recipes available.

@@ShortCircuitedBrewers if you want, I can send you recipes to try as I find winners.
I used to run an ornamental plant farm some years ago. I would recommend you to use “Osmocote” as a fertilizer because it is a slow release. You can buy it for six to one year (if you are in a hot weather is goin to last lest) and also there is several proportions of nutrients so you can get the one that cover your soil and plant requirements the best. Try to find out the most common pest and deseases for your area and plan how you will spray and the best quimicals for your plants. You might need some licenses to get some of the best quimicals so now is a good time to figure how to get them. Good luck in you new plantation.
@ShortCircuitedBrewers3 жыл бұрын
I won't be using any chemicals on the hops I use in beer. Thanks for the fertilizer tip! 👍🍻

@@ShortCircuitedBrewers I grow like hops together, but I still like the bag idea because the rhizomes go nuts after a couple years. I find I need to dig them up and split/divide them. Maybe the bag would make that process easier.

Very cool trellis system Brian! Ill have to do a video on my system when I go to pick the hops. My sytem will do a similar job by swinging down and also I can lower my line with a pulley. Im in Wester NY and have 2 Cascade, 1 each of Mt Hood, Columbus, Chinook, and Centennial. My Centennial are close to being ready to pick. Always eariler than the rest. Hope you all are doing well! Brian, now that you have your own hop trellis, do you plan on making hop pellets from your crop? I saw something on Ebay that looked interesting, but not sure if it would work. Hop pelletizer machines go for $1,500 but a stainless steel home electric chicken feed pelletizer machine goes for $170 new and $95 used. I wonder if that would work? That way I could use my home grown hops and then convert them to pellets, and then use them in a hop drop for oxygen free dry hopping. What do you think?
@ShortCircuitedBrewers2 жыл бұрын
I've not looked into that yet..I also thought about a sausage grinder with a 4-5mm plate to see if that would work? Who knows I may have to try it..
