Thank you. This is fascinating. I had no idea that mRNA was in at least some cases transported to the locations where its encoded protein was needed. And amazing to see that the mRNA encodes not just the protein sequence, but also sequences needed to make translation site-dependent, and sequences needed to support binding to motor proteins. It seems like moving your mRNA and ribosomes to the "job site" may be more efficient because you need to transport fewer molecules to the "job site" -- just transport the machines and information for making lots of protein, rather than all the proteins. I imagine it also enables faster response time, since once the ribosomes are set up, all you need to do is send some mRNA out there to get things cranking. Really amazing- always grateful to iBiology for putting these together and for the scientists (Dr. Singer in this case) who are willing to share.
