I bought an X-T3 earlier in the year and quickly fell in love with it. When the XH1 markdown deal popped up. I sold some Canon gear and bought an XH1 with the battery grip. Love both of them. It did take a while to accept that the Fuji's shoot for the most part, at a higher ISO than the Canon 80D that I had. Had the mindset that higher ISO is bad, which isn't necessarily true with Fuji cameras. It has drawn me away from programmed settings and made me more comfortable with using manual settings. I have become a hummingbird shooter(stalker) and this has helped me improve my tracking skills. Love both of them, and at this point there is no favorite.

Well done review! I think you really give viewers a sense of what it's like to work with the X-H1. I have used the X-H1 since it first came out, and now own three of them and a lot of Fuji glass. It has become my go-to kit for personal shooting as well as much of my commercial and event photography. There are times when I still pull out the Canon 5D MK IV equipment, but I enjoy shooting with the Fuji system so much more, and as you pointed out, the difference in image quality between the X-H1's 24MP APS-C sensor, and many full frame sensors is not that significant. And it's about 30% smaller and lighter to pack around which my shoulder and neck appreciate. Not to mention the added benefit of IBIS, especially with the non-stabilized and gorgeous fast Fuji prime lenses. At it's current pricing, I cannot think of a better value in a mirrorless camera at this point in time, especially as highly spec'd as the X-H1 is. It truly is a great "all-arounder".

This is a stellar review of a camera I love. I bought it the day it was released. What enticed me the most was the form factor and IBIS, particularly for video. People can nitpick about a million little things that they wish it would do but it has proven to be a solid performer for me since day one. Keep up the good work, you have a wonderful presentation style.

I have had the X-H1 for about a year now and I feel the same now as I did when I purchased it, it makes photography fun again. The oversized grip is good for my oversized hands. The colors produced are very similar to the old Fuji films of the past. I use this camera with the 18-55 and 50-140 lenses. I am amazed at the sharpness of the lens. As you mentioned the focus is not that of a Sony but the latest firmware has helped. My reason for purchasing this was for a light weight carry camera on trails. I have used it in rainy conditions and it has performed beautifully.

It's nice to see an actual and practical review of X-H1 and not only 1 year old reviews. I have switched to Fujifilm X-H1 from Nikon APS-C DSLRs. I am not very interested in video I have switched just for still photography. I am really satisfied with camera performance, image quality and ergonomics. I again much more enjoy taking pictures. The only drawback is battery consumption. But currently I have 3 batteries and it is OK for me for full day of shooting. For my Nikons I had 2 batteries for 1 week trip and I did not take the charger on my trip. It's not the case for X-H1. But advantage is that batteries can be charged directly in camera by USB cable. On trips I do it during nights and did not take charger with me anyway.

Im not through the video yet but want to comment on your coyote situation. I dont know if you are aware of that setting but you can tell the camera to display the image in ur evf and on the backscreen with the final brightness. This is really helpfull when you are in situations where u need to react fast and dont have the time to test which setting looks the best. Nowdays i always have this on because i never check the images while shooting. I had in incident like yours years ago and it was while shooting an event and i forgot that i switched the setting to display max brightness not accurate brightness of the final image. You can change it under "Display Settings -> Exp /WB preview. You can switch between Exposure & Whitebalance preview, WB Only and both off

A great review! I have always loved my X-H1, it is a very un-appreciated camera and overlooked. The timing by Fuji to release the X-T3 shortly after took all the wind out of the sails of the X-H1. I always wondered why Fuji didn't put the processor and chip from the X-T3 into the X-H1...but, having used it the camera is no slouch. As you noted the X-Trans 3 sensor has a lot of ability to catch details and recover pictures if ...accidents happen. :D I have been there. There are so many great deals out currently for this, both stand alone with grip and also a few with lenses that are so hard to pass up as the camera ends up to be $300 or so when you compare normal prices of those lenses. Crazy.

Great video! Love the introduction and opener to your review regarding the coyote! I own one and agree with all of your points. Did not realize the age of this video; I run both Nikon and Fujifilm. I originally bought an E-X1 for a steal. Now it's become my favorite travel camera. Now I moved overseas and was not able to bring my Nikon gear and picked up an X-H1 with battery grip for less than $800 new. Because they are small, I take them everywhere which gives me opportunity to take shots. I've been able to get my most impactful images because a) I always have the camera near me b) the image quality is more than enough for me and c) the colors are brilliant. Am I a 100% convert? No, rocking a d300s or D800 still has its own thing and getting those images is still fantastic. But freedom has its own reward.

Long time Nikon user. I love my full frame Nikon but, it is heavy and so I use it close to home and for studio work. Six years ago I started to read about the Fuji X cameras on Nikon boards. In December 2013 I bought an XE-2. After years of disappointment with smaller cameras (Nikon and Canon) I found one that I loved. I like the mechanical controls. They remind me of my first all manual SLR. I take it everywhere. When I travel I never have to compromise (IPhone??? nope). A good of mine does second camera for his wife's wedding photography business. One day he was hit by a bicycle that passed a stopped but at a crosswalk.His shoulder was out of commission for 6 weeks (or 9 weddings). He could not support the weight of his Canon gear. I loaned him my XE-2. It saved his season. Fuji make cameras that are intuitive. Their lenses are great and the size is just right for my go to camera. I tried the X-Pro 1 before deciding on the XE-2. I liked the viewfinder, but I felt that the camera was a bit big. I wonder the same about the X-H1. Is is that much smaller and lighter than my D-8x0?

The X-H1 is still my favorite SLR styled Fuji camera to use. The style of the X-H fits me better than the X-T line especially since I use the red badge zooms quite a bit. Great video. I recently sold my Fuji XT-2 and lenses because I wasn't using it as much as I expected. As you mentioned in the video, I also was using slower zoom lenses but still was able to get sharp shots in overcast and lower light situations. I think the XH-1 with the Ibis sets it apart from the other Fuji cameras. I'm sure the XH-2 is right around the corner. I love Fuji's film simulations and I still have an X70 so I can enjoy them.

Started out with with an X-T1 and an 18-135 lens for a kick around camera, on a shoot I used it as a second camera to my Canon Mark III, I preferred the image quality over the Canon and then invested in an X-Pro 2 and then sold all my Canon gear after using X-T2 when they came out. I bought an X-H1 at $1299.00 and loved it so much that I bought another one for backup at $999.00, I also sold the X-T2 to help pay for the second H-X1. Having so many different Fuji cameras, the menu options were different and with two of the same cameras, the menu is more familiar for me is easier to navigate. I still have my X-Pro 2 as I couldn't part with it and it is now my kick around (travel) camera...

Earlier this year I switched from a Nikon D500 to a Fuji X-T20, mainly for the reduced size of both camera and lenses, and I'm quite happy. As you stated, shooting action shots on the D500 with the 200-500mm lens was easier than I find it on the X-T20 with the 100-400mm, but not enough that I want to go back to that weight and bulk. I'm trying to resist the temptation to upgrade to the X-H1 to get that IBIS, but now it's even harder for me to resist. 😄

What an amazing review, no mumbo jumbo, just clear, concise and appropriate. I will be viewing more of your videos and will be joining in the not too distant future...look forward to taking part in some of your training content. I am a dedicated Fujifilm user and have had various Fujifilm cameras (ranging from the X-A2 to the X-T3), with the 16-55mm lens my go-to lens. I have also owned a variation of Nikon cameras, but their glass and colors don't come close to what you get out of the Fuji system (I guess that's why you never see many used Fuji lenses for sale, but if you do, they do hold their value) One of my local photography stores recently reduced the X-H1 body to £699, but I was concerned that it wouldn't live up to my X-T3...I was wrong! Your video review gave me the confidence to purchase the X-H1 and each time I have used it, unfortunately just at home with my dogs, kids, astro, and macro (during lockdown), I am more and more impressed. I still feel it doesn't quite match up to my X-T3, but until the lockdown is done and dusted, I can't put it to the test in the studio and for landscape...I look forward to this and will report back my findings. Thanks for sharing your photography experience, views, and recommendations ;)

I dumped my full frame and crop sensor Nikon gear for an XT-2 a little while ago. I will never go back to the big brands: Too heavy and too costly. I love my XT-2. The lenses are excellent and a full backpack is way more manageable. If, as I suspect, Fujifilm offers IBIS in the XT-4, I'll buy it in a second. This is the first brand of camera that I have used/owned that I plan to keep, forever. I won't sell my XT-2. I'll simply convert it and enjoy my favorite type of photography, infrared. Good Vlog. Thinking of xh1 or eos r. I'm already heavily invested in Canon glass. But the xh1 is 899 on Amazon right now. The adaptor is 350. Not bad.. The eos r is 1700ish for a decently used one. What's your opinion?
@RM-hy4so5 жыл бұрын
Chris Drakerton go with the Eos R with adapter if you have the budget. The canon adapter will work better with the canon. In the case of the X-H1, I have heard the fringer pro works pretty well. I too have a bunch of great canon lenses, but got a great deal on the X-H1 and 3 Fuji lenses, so I went for it. If I did not get that deal, I probably would re-think my strategy. Eventually you would want native lenses and that would get expensive unless you want to trade your canon lenses. Fuji lenses are excellent and cost less, so you might not have to spend too much, depending on what you want to get.
@Las_cacas5 жыл бұрын
R M thanks for the advice, I’ve heard the fringer works well. But I too like using native glass. Although either camera is in my budget at the moment (not always the case), I know investing in Fuji glass will be out of reach at the moment. I like their pricing on lenses but not sure about overall quality and weather sealing. Again thanks for your input, I’m a wedding photographer so whatever camera I get has to fit the bill for the next 3-5 years.

Solid review. Minor correction that the grip actually provides a total of 3 batteries that you can monitor from the top LCD. The XH1 has convinced me to move away from Sony permanently as I always found I get better results with a shorter workflow with Fuji. Ergonomics with this camera are so much better than the Sony...I feel that Fuji becomes intuitive faster; and love that the XH1 uses the same battery as my X100F for travel.

Just bought an XH1 on backmarket. (second hand market). The seller told me that the body was damaged but when i saw it, it was just tiny scratches.. the xh1 is reaaaally tough.. Arriving from a XT20, i wanted to upgrade to a more tougher version.. XT2 was really tempting but losing the touch screen was a bummer. And winning the IBIS system was, in opposite, a very good deal. So i skipped the xt2 for the xh1 and it was a good choice. My sharp 35mm f/2 is even sharper than ever😍😍 the image quality i won is insane. If you had the EVF set to display your preview exposure you would have seen the discrepancy off the bat. I use this feature almost all the time. This is a distinct advantage over DSLR cameras and you might as well take advantage of the technology. I get that it was a mistake but i just leave it on because it helps dial in your setting faster. While it doesn't have as much dynamic range as Sony it will get the job done. I love it and I bought it when it was first released at full price and have not been disappointed. I've shot several weddings with it and the IBIS is an amazing advantage to have making every lens even my primes stabilized. Cant wait to see the X-H2!

Great Review. Just bought the XH-1 recently as the price point was just to good to refuse and simply put, there is currently no better value our there. You mentioned some great points, however I feel there are plenty of other things for me that make this camera very special. The leaf shutter is so responsive and quiet. It also adds another layer to shake reduction. The EVF is awesome and the touchscreen (whilst a little laggy) is very handy for changing focus point. The ergonomics and build quality are also superior to my XT-2. Many people seem to not like the slightly bigger size but I actually prefer it and the deep grip means I can comfortably hold it for hours on end. I understand why Fujifilm users are passionate about their gear. I have a Nikon D850 with a lot of great glass, but there's something so enjoyable about using the Fujifilm system. It really is for those who enjoy the process not just the results.

The camera doesn't have a leaf shutter. It has a leaf shutter release button. The mechanical shutter, like most other cameras, is of the focal plane type. What Fuji has done with the shutter mechanism, is dampen it even further, making it virtually silent.

I also still shoot with my Canon 5D Mark3 and 1D Mark4 but not as often as I used to. The Fuji film simulation had a lot going for it which is something that no others Camera system has going for it which I find fantastic and normally keep on continuous shooting mode.

Hey Leigh! I had a similar story to yours! Was at a friends birthday, shot her outside, day, shade, but had my xt3 set to last nights 6400 iso setting, not the 640 iso setting (more on that later) The shot was like 3 stops overexposed! Underexposed is one thing. Overexposed? I should pack it in, right? Turns out, if you shoot at iso 640 or higher and set dynamic range to DR400, the camera’s unmentioned dual native iso kicks in, giving you alot more hilight retention! Should work on all xtrans 4 sensors!!! Check it out!

Image calibration on XH1 doesn’t lock down which has caused me some stress. I find I really need to handle it well before I do a shoot or I can end up with moment of utter confusion. It would be good if the menu supported an option to turn IBIS off at a speed of your choosing as that may be counterproductive starting around 250 and higher. I have had the camera lock up on me in a fast and busy shoot and I’ve had to reset all the settings to get up and going again with no time to consider preferences, good reason to have a back up camera available. Shooting in RAW is the way to go but try shooting in both jpeg and RAW just to explore the advantages of both.
@JackP335 жыл бұрын
The native ISO for that 24MP chip is 200-1600; if you shot at anything higher, the RAW file would have been identical to 1600. The metadata in the file would have instructed Lightroom to render the image brighter but your finished product would be no different than if you took the image at 6400. Now, had you limited exposure to 800 you would have had a harder time bringing up the image.

The X-H1 is clearly a steal at $999 w/grip. W/grip and 16-55 2.8 it’s 1698. That’s a 300 savings on that lens in the bundle! ?? As a stop gap to the X-H2, should I get this setup or an X-T30 w/the same lens? Excellent review! SC Rocks!!!

You needn't have worried about the coyote photos. Pushing the ISO as you did gives very similar results to using a high ISO setting in the first place. Most camera sensors these days are ISO invariant. I don't use Fuji, but if I was starting all over again, I would be very tempted by the XH-1. Thank you for giving us your thoughts on this excellent camera.
@LeighAndRaymond5 жыл бұрын
I was/am tempted by the X-H1 and lenses I used too. I REALLY liked them. However, there is a point where you over/under-expose so much that you do lose detail, which is what it looked like happened before I pulled the images onto the computer. :)
@Gynra5 жыл бұрын
@@LeighAndRaymond Yes, there comes a point when bumping up the ISO or pushing underexposed images will result in unusable images. I have been able to successfully recover images underexposed by five stops, and which looked black on my file viewer before adjustment. In this case, they were full frame images, and I imagine a smaller sensor would be a bit more limited in this respect.

You have experienced many of the same chalenges using the x-h1 as me. When trying to photograph birds in flight, the auto focus doesn't seem to be able to keep-up most of the time (which is frustrating). I can get equally good wildlife stills as my friend who uses a Canon d7 II (also an APS-C) but she seems to get a higher % of sharp in flight shots! Thought about trying a Nikon d500 or Canon for that purpose alone?

Thinking of xh1 or eos r. I'm already heavily invested in Canon glass. But the xh1 bundle is 899 on Amazon right now. The ef adaptor is 350 (fringer). So both for around 1250$ not bad.. The eos r is 1700ish for a decently used one, would still need a ef adaptor. What's your opinion? I already own 2 x 5d mkiii.

For Fujifilm and only Fujifilm, you must use Capture One. If you use Lightroom you will get those pesky wormy artefacts. For all other platforms, Lightroom is fine. I know, I own 8 x Fujifilm X and GFX series cameras. They have a free version for Fujifilm users. It was developed by both Fujifilm and Phase One. The differences are like day and night. You may also shoot at 100 iso and there is literally no noise at all. The tracking on the X-T3's is much faster and is evolved from the X-T2 and X-H1 series. I have 4 x X-T3's and find they are super fast.

Thank you for your review! What was your experience like with using the Voigtlander on the XH1?? I own a Xpro2, XT2 and have been looking into a more video-centric camera. I've been debating on the soon to come A7SIII or perhaps the recently released Lumix S1H. But having invested into about 6 Fuji Primes, if I where to go another route I would need to invest in new glass (E or L mount). So hence my XH1 youtube search. I personally think... that the XH2 is inevitable, but the question is when???? Hopefully by the end of the year, or early next year. When it does, as many others have said, I hope it has internals that would at least pursue what the Lumix S1H is currently offering.
@fellowcitizen5 жыл бұрын
The S1H is the best out there, and has access to brilliant lenses - especially with the MC-21 and other adaptors and ART lenses. However, it's very expensive, and many of the features require skill and experience to make the most of. If you already have Fuji glass then an X-H2 makes more sense since it allows you to get excellent results very quickly via film simulations. I'm considering the S1H or SIGMA fp eventually, but I already have Voigtlaender rangefinder film lenses and Foveon lenses which work via the MC-21 so the cost of entry is relatively low. I mainly shoot Fuji, but got the Sigma Foveon because the sensor and ART lenses intrigued me and were remarkably cheap, so the fact that these L mount cameras are now compatible is a pleasant surprise. Voigtlaender lenses above 35mm should work well with Fuji and Panasonic, and some of the very recently released wider lenses 21mmF3.5(?) and 15mm MkIII have apparently been adjusted to play well with digital sensors.

Your underexposed case is really weird the EVF should be displaying the actual exposure even if limited by the ISO. I own an X-H1 and shot with almost all of the fuji lenses. The 16mm 1.4 , 56mm 1.2 and 35mm F/2 are my favorites. I use the camera with Sigma 18-35 that I own and its sooo good. One thing is that with X-h1 the focusing pulses weirdly which I really despise of. For action shots electronic shutter gives you a bit more contrast with I found out lately and stopping down on any lens increases the speed of tracking. The camera is great and its the best one I have ever owned. Just use Classic Chrome with -2 on Shadows and -2 on Highlights you'll get really nice results with post processing. I also use +2 on sharpness and on ideal light using -4 on Noise reduction. Get the sharpest photos with these settings. Just make sure if ISO is higher or equal to 3200 use noise reduction.

On the Fujis you can turn 'Natural Live View' on or off. If you have it 'off', it shows what the *result* would be (factoring in exposure), but if you have it 'on' it mimics an OVF. With Natural Live View on you can easily make the mistake she did because you're not seeing what the result would be in the EVF.

Interesting review. One comment, one question. I have found the XT3 to be a superb camera system. The only drawbacks are battery life and inferior auto focus tracking. If they get even close to Sony tracking it will be unbeatable. My question is this: In your coyote session wouldn’t the EVF have shown you a black screen and tipped you off to change your settings?
@LeighAndRaymond5 жыл бұрын
I had the EVF set for that. My guess is that the video recorder I had plugged into the camera may have messed with the setting. I didn't do any testing on it though.
@alanross36615 жыл бұрын
I think that was probably the cause.

@@alanross3661 Sony has better tracking but if you can't get the shot without tracking then you may want to spend more time on improving your skills instead of whinging about bells and whistles on a camera.
@MikeReyher5 жыл бұрын
There is a preview mode for the EVF where you can choses to preview exposure in the EVF or not. The reason you would not want to preview exposure is in a studio setting where the exposure is dominated by flash and you would not be able to see your subject in the EVF. I have this mode set to the fn button on the top of my XT-2 as I switch this mode often. Further, the Fuji cameras,. like many modern cameras are "ISO-less" which means the raw files are always recorded at the native ISO of 200. The ISO setting affects how the preview or JPEG is rendered and also serves as input the exposure management system that dives shutter and/or aperture when they are set to "A". This is why the preview jpeg was black and the raw file was just fine. My guess is exposure preview was "off" during the coyote sequence.

Hey SnapChick! I'm a big fan of your channel and, as a long-time Fuji shooter, I really enjoyed this review. I feel like it captured the shooting experience with the X-H1. There is, however, one aspect in which I feel like you did your viewers a disservice: The X-H1 is Fuji's flagship body in name only. The X-T3, which debuted shortly after the X-H1 with a brand new sensor and processor, offers dramatic improvements in AF tracking, eye and face AF, and low light focusing that make it absolutely competitive with the best full-frame options in these aspects of performance. There's a reason the X-T3 was chosen as Camera of the Year by so many major publications while the X-H1 was priced for clearance less than a year after it debuted. To be clear, I'm not arguing that the X-H1 is a bad camera. As you aptly demonstrate, it is a very competent camera body with excellent build quality, unique ergonomics, and IBIS. It may very well be the best choice for someone looking to get into the Fuji system. But if you're going to compare the capabilities of Fuji's X-System with the full-frame systems of Sony, Canon and Nikon as you did in the review, the X-H1 is not the body to choose. That would be the X-T3.

The X-H1's 24mp sensor has a slight low-light advantage over the newer 26mp sensor. The sensor-stabilisation also affords lower shutterspeeds and thus lower ISO shots for clearer image quality in low-light if the subjects are still or slow-moving. You'd be missing out on the X-T3's AF and video advantages, though.
@LeighAndRaymond5 жыл бұрын
Having used both, for all practical purposes, you won’t notice a difference between the two bodies in terms of low light image quality and autofocus performance. I would go with whichever you prefer using or look at other specs, like IBIS, and then just make sure you have some fast glass. :)

On my x-h1 is nice to have 3 auto iso settings, but when you work in command mode, is ABSURD you have to go from 200 to 51200 and then you reach auto-iso, and vice versa. Usually you work on lower iso and it's crazy to have to rotate million times the front wheel to reach again auto iso. On Nikon you can easily disable and enable auto function, but on this Fuji is crazy! I hope they fix it, because it's impossibile to use it fast to override ISO without having to touch the top dial.
