Yeah, Ryan is on the XS Element (previous model with horst link) 27.5 wheels standard on the xs model. Been a great option for him... good geo for a more "trail" feel for him.

I also own a 2024 SB140 LR and recently had a free demo on the Ripmo V3. I pretty much agree with everything you said about both bikes. I left satisfied that I still prefer my SB140 LR over the Ripmo, although I would be a happy Ripmo owner. BTW, regarding the SB140, on the flip side you can beef up the suspension. For the park days I swap mine with a Kitsuma coil and Fox 38 with a Vorsprung Secus, and with the right tires it'll happily eat the gnarliest park laps all day.

Mixed-wheel bikes are an invention by the bike industry. Literally no one asked for this. I appreciate your transparent, reviews and you're one of the channels I follow most on YT. I did purchase a Ripley V4 because of your reviews, but ended up hating it due to geo conflicts with my neanderthal body. Now on a Yeti and it's my 'Goldilocks' bike. Amazing in every way.

This is what I like about Jason and why I watch MTB yumyum. He can accept and describe how two bikes can be just as enjoyable/good and yet be different. Other so called reviewers are so narrow minded there is only room in their brains for one flavor of good and everything else must be bad, and God forbid they compare brands in fear the sponsors will drop them (a waste of time). It almost like Jason allows for Vanilla Ice-cream flavor to be good, yet Strawberry is also good, and Chocolate and Rum Raisin, and Rocky Road, and Mint chocolate etc. depending on your mood that day. And he has no problem describing each flavor to you. Thank God for this channel.

Which is the more versatile bike? Trying to decide between one of these of a Ripley V5. Can you ride the SB140 fine on flatter terrain or is it just to dull on those types of trails?

I would say the SB140 is more versatile.... has a slightly better pedaling platform for more "xc"ish type rides and just overall feels more efficient. The Yeti is also lighter weight and will a set of my carbon yum yum wheels, the yeti can get down in the low 27 lbs range! I would take the sb140 over the V5 ripley all day!!! Plus, Salt Cycles (801-943-8502) has them on sale right now... of course they're an Ibis deal too if you end up going with the Ripley.... just would be the direction I would go. Good luck!

Cuz that would make it seem like the yeti was the softer or more active more absorbent bike and yet you keep talking about the ripmo being just that. I guess I'd love for you to go ahead and over pressure it enough to wear it in no way suffers inefficiency versus the yeti and then report back on how the overall ride quality changed. Correct, closer to full travel on the sb140 and it still feels more supportive and feels like it's riding higher in it's travel. I just think the new Ripmo feels very soft in the first 3rd or half of the shock travel and just has a slightly more "pillow cloud" feeling than the previous Ripmo or current sb140. To be clear, I think it's a good thing and intentional by Ibis for this bike! Sag numbers are fine on the Ripmo and have bottomed it out in higher speed more chunky trails... just not these blue trails. hope that helps.

If you don’t need the protection that comes with dhr/dhr ii, I’d say give it a try. I love it but only ride it on blue trails. It’s the same setup i have on my wife’s bike

I’m trading in my Switchblade and going with one of these two probably soon. Hard lean on Yeti . The new green Yeti is drool……Whats your take on AXS worth it? I have it and find it to be more a pain and might also go back to mechanic cables for my rear. Not sure. Any thoughts?

Personal preference really on the shifting... I prefer mechanical over axs... I like the presence of the cable feeling on my thumb... I also tend to sort preload the cable just a bit for a more precise shift as needed.. maybe a bad habit really lol. I intend to build one with very light components and fast rolling tires, because im convinced that the switch infinity + light components + trail geometry (66,5° headtube angle) is a great combo for xc/trail riding for those who ride twitchy and why not technical trails up and down.

hah yep! It's a great time to be a mountain biker and the sb120 is a great bike! At the time, and in comparison to the V4 Ripley, I would have gone with the Ripley over the sb120.... that's not to say I didn't like the sb120 tho. It is actually a very nimble and playful bike and slightly more capable than the V4 ripley.... plus, Salt Cycles has them on a massive discount right now!! I think I was just comparing the weight of the sb120 to the sb140 and was sort of leaning that way.... I really liked the bike tho! They kinda destroyed the Rocky Mountain, didn't sugar coat anything, didn't overly praise anything. Everything had some negatives. They mentioned which bikes tend to rattle, fail here and there, perform better in different situations and they used multiple opinions.

I actually like the Switchblade but Pivot’s sizing has become too big in their most recent model changes… the new (current) Switchblade and Firebird in size Medium no longer fit me and just feel way too big. Sadly the size small on both are a bit cramped for me as well

Grip X on the Ripmo. It goes like this for me: Grip X > Grip X2 and Grip 2 > Grip X Honestly, since the new forks came out I've not liked any of them as much as the old Grip 2 and my most recent bike has a Pike Ultimate on it with charger 3

Fox live valve NEO makes any comparisons for climbing or peddling a non issue. The only thing to compare then is how the bike handles going downhill.

@ funny you should ask. I bought two of them. A 190x45 that weighs 580 g. without the battery. I also bought a 210x55 but I did not weigh that one. That one is a little larger as well. The shocks themselves are around $1000 and then the sensor kits are $400. I bought the 210x55 for my Canyon Spectral and was completely blown away on how incredible it made the bike feel. I then bought the 190x45 for my Cervelo ZFS5 cross country bike. Again, I couldn’t be happier. If you can swing the cost, I highly recommend them.

If you have let’s say a Santa Cruz Blur with stock setup that’s pretty freaking awesome for all XC, would you still recommend the Forekaster or Rekon’s on the 140 as my other bike, or leave the chunk tires on the 140? I LOVE both bikes but do feel like I could use some more speed/less drag on the Yeti at times… So in summary 😅, Yeti with XC tires overall a better setup for you on what you like to ride (I ride similar trails to what I’ve seen you rip), or do you leave it with the bigger tires? No, I would still get along better with these two bikes. The Switchblade can also feel a bit harsh for me going through high speed chattery sections of trail… I owned the previous generation Switchblade and had to mess with the rear shock to get it feeling just right. Typically I prefer the feel of the Ibis bikes

I rode the SB 140 recently and thought it climbed and descended well but the stack height made it really hard to manual and bunny hop compared to my SC MT. Do you run riser bars or higher stack height on your 140. I also used to own a Pivot switchblade, thanks

Ok, story time. I could tell you just the facts but that wouldn’t illustrate the whole process well…so it’s a little long. Sorry. About a month ago I just was in the Denver area to visit family so I stopped in at Yeti to try out a couple sizes of their lunch ride SB120. I was looking for a short travel trail bike. Their size sheet put me (at 170cm tall and long torso) at the top end of small or at the middle bottom of medium. I didn’t intend to get an SB120, I just wanted to get a sense of what size bike I should be on. I’m coming off a little bit too small for me hardtail (bmx habits die hard) and I was hoping to keep the ease of bunnyhop and manual while getting onto a bike with a little more appropriate sizing (either a longer small or short-to-mid-sized medium). The reach, chainstay, and stack of the medium SB120 is pretty similar to the medium SB140 with the 140 being a few mm taller, 7mm longer reach, and 1mm longer chainstay so I think these observations are relevant. The medium SB120 felt a little harder to pull up/manual/bunnyhop during the quick demo than I wanted. We raised the stem to 25mm of spacers and it felt WAY better. It was easier to pull into a manual. It bunnyhopped better. I jumped back and forth with the small a few times and the small felt nimble but twitchy and the medium felt maneuverable for both my body and bike. I purchased the medium. The bike is SO sick that the demo talked me into it immediately. But I still wanted a little less reach to help it feel more maneuverable (bmx dies hard!)…I saw that Burgtec has a 42.5mm reach stem to swap in place of the 50mm Burgtec that ships on the bike. Sweet. I haven’t had it on the trails yet because it’s 9°F and we have snow everywhere, but with the 25mm of spacers under the shorter stem I’m pulling up into manuals easily and bunnyhopping easily in my garage. Long story short? It’s a cool bike and going up with the stack a little would help you (and anyone else) gain that last bit of leverage to hop/manual more easily. …plus if you’re really worried about it you could go with the Burgtec Josh Bryceland 38mm (or 50mm) rise bars to stay in-brand for the build!

Yeah, I guess I look at Bikes in just a few categories. Maybe different than the rest of the Bike industry. For me, there are cross country bikes, trail bikes, and all mountain bikes…. Of course there’s road bikes, BMX bikes, downhill bikes, but speaking about mountain bikes in general those are the three categories I put them in. I would not put this in the heavy hitting all mountain bike category. I know the bike industry will use the word Enduro bike but it drives me crazy. I’m not really sure what an Enduro bike is or a downcountry bike for that matter😝

V2S vs V3? If you could choose on ripmo

depends if you care about the latest greatest, and storage. The geo is not that much different, the redesigned rear end maybe slightly more progressive. Honestly I am on the V2s and have no intention of going to a V3, not different enough to warrant the change.

Honestly, when they put the fox 38 and X2 shock on the V2 Ripmo, I was no longer interested in that bike. They were making it something that it’s not. Trying to make up for a bike that they didn’t have in the IBIS lineup. Now with the HD6, they were able to put the Ripmo back where it belongs in the trail bike category. Not only that but this bike has better suspension leverage curve or something going on. It’s overall a softer more supple bike than the previous V2 Ripmo. It does not come down to the in framestorage and slight Geo update. It feels like a much different bike than the previous V2.

about to watch this now, but does it seem like Yeti is falling behind by a big amount in the social media space? their bikes seem a bit dated now, get very little attention, and don't even make the big channel reviews anymore.

I wouldn’t say that. JKW and Bikers Edge reviews them fairly often and the lineup has seen a recent refresh. Their prices are still absurd, however.

I have in-frame storage on my Stumpy Evo and I don't use it. I tried it and I hated it and here's why. It's too small and didn't have enough storage and I needed to use another bag anyway. It was very hard to use and very hard to get stuff in and out. The water battle is attached to the hatch which was weird. If they made the downtube bigger so that the storage was bigger and then made the hatch bigger and did not attach the water bottle to the hatch, then I might like it. Maybe the hatch could face to the side. In the end, it was just easier to use a bar top bag.
