OH WOW!!! I just purchased 2 of these and this video helped me a lot in identifying the ISA boards. I also have a 5150 I'm going to work on. Always wanted one of these when they first came out and now after 30 some years I get to play with them. Thank you so much for going into detail on the components!

Giving the thumbs up for IDE cable management. Looks great.

There is literally no other way to handle the cables in such a system :) It is a very tight fight.

@@RetroSpector78 I am binging IBM videos this week. No one else is doing tight 90 degree folds. It also looks like you are using clips to hold the folds together behind the drives?

Had one of those back in the day ( an early clone however). Would love to have one now, to tinker with Venix/86, Xenix/86 and PC/IX. These were the "poor man's UNIX box" back in 83/84. Somewhat the "godfather" of what we knowadays have with Linux on PCs...

Thx ! One of the first retro computers I bought turned out to be an IBM 5162. Had no idea about model numbers at the time and did not know how rare that particular model was. After that it took some time to find my next affordable IBMs (5150 / 5160 / 5170 / 5155).. But with patience they will pop up. If you're just into retro and just what to have an XT experience there are also lots of clones available. These should be more easy to find and a lot cheaper.

Hey that's cool. the hard drive controller uses a z80 as the processor. that's crazy that a mainstream cpu used as a main cpu in other computers are just used as the controller for the hardware. Imagine having to use an i3 for your sata controller lol

Was there any disadvantage in having RAM on a card compared with having it all on the motherboard?

Very nice video as always ! It will actually serve me well soon as I now have almost every parts to build back one IBM XT like this ! I only miss a case (that should be fixed soon), and a IBM floppy disk drive, everything else is ready (though my two motherboards seem to need new caps). Sorry to ask you that on KZbin, but do you have any IBM spare drive (even untested or not in working order) that you'd be willing to trade ? I have several old spare parts that I'll probably never use, so I'd rather exchange them against things I will actually use ^^

Have lots 5.25 inch floppy drives here, but no spare full height IBM Tandon drives I'm afraid. Where are you located ?

nice video but can you please do a short video of the cables that is connected from the colour monitor to main unit please, because I think my colour monitor cable is wrong, so please show your cables at the back please and any details please.
@RetroSpector785 жыл бұрын
Should be straightforward. MDA / CGA / Hercules use 9 pin d-sub connectors (like a vga card but with 2 rows of pins instead of 3). If it has a vga card it will have a 15 pin 3 row d-sub connector. And you can’t hookup a “modern” vga monitor to an old ega/cga/mda/hercules videocard.
