Hi Les Garten Please change your google + settings so that I can respond to your comments. IBM x3650 M3 with 2 X5650, nice server, I also have that configuration. I have not used IBM's special edition for a while,,,there goes like a littel bit before there comes a ESXi version for IBM / Lenovo,, like i cut not finde the 6.0 for IBM / Lenovo yet. (if you got a link, I would like to try it) I am sure that there are some advantages in running the IBM Edition, and now that you ask me i´ll have to try it again :-) Thank you for watching! :-)

Morten Hjorth Hi, Thanx for the information! I really liked a lot of your videos. I have the same Fluke 85 and noticed that it is getting kind of dim. If I find the IBM 6.0 ESXi I'll let you know. Really enjoying playing with ESXi so far. I downloaded like 15 Linux distro's this weekend! I worked on my Google + settings so hopefully that is back restored. I did upgrade to ESXi 6.0 non-IBM version, so I guess you are right, there is a delay in upgrading the OEM versions. by IBM.

Hey, thank you for all of youre videos! I LOVE WATCHING them and i learned a lot of stuff about servers, this is the reason why i got 2x x3650 m1 next to my old Dell Poweredge 2950 servers. The problem im having with the x3650 servers is I can install esxi 5.5 on them, did a complete firmware upgrade ( pain in the a** with XP in this age ) but i still can't get it to install esxi 6.0 6.0u1 6.0u2 or 6.0u3 on it, it says that CPU is not compatible with current version. How did you manage to install it? What kind of CPU `s are you running in the servers? I got the Xeon 3.0 and Xeon 3.2 ghz versions in the 7979 servers. Should i upgrade the CPU's? Thank you :)
@MyPlayHouse6 жыл бұрын
Hi Norbert Biro Thank You very much! For firmware search for "BOMC" on my channel to see how to do that. The x3650 M1 has two system boards,, one of them works with the Intel Xeon 5400 series,, and they can work with up to ESXi 6.5,,, the other board 5100 and 5300 series,, I think you have those CPU's in.. but you need to check your board,, or borrow a 5400 to find out. Thank you for watching! :-)

You would need to upgrade your vcenter to 6 before you can manage 6 hosts, so the normal procedure would be to do that prior to installing 6 on any of your hosts. Additionally, not having the IBM custom iso would limit or remove the functionaliy of IBM hardware specific monitoring and features (eg temp monitoring, power modes, ibm specific pci shelves and daughter cards). Im curious to see what your system monitoring panel reports. If you can do a quick followup (if you still have 6 on any of those hosts) and show us what esx knows about the server. I have a two pairs of M3s which im tenatively considering upgrading myself.

Hi +Shinkamui This video is not new,,any more,, i have since switch to ESXi 6.0.0 on vCenter and hostes.. This video was mostly if my old servers cut run it at all. and they did. I have installed IBM/Lenovo custom iso´s on some servers,, not that there is much differences. And they really clams that all my stuff is to old,,both acording to the "VMware Compatibility Guide and the "VMware ESXi 6.0 - Unsupported Hardware" So it working working on problem,,was great! Thank you for watching! :-)

+My PlayHouse (Morten Hjorth) Just wanted to follow up and say I went ahead and upgraded. VCenter upgrade was a total bust, I ended up having to install a new 6u1 vcsa. The hosts upgraded fine (3650M3 7945s), and i used the lenovo custom iso despite no written support from lenovo. Seems all my alerting and sensors are still intact. Very pleased with the end result. After watching your video, i was jelly and just ordered IBM Virtual media keys for my servers (negotiated 10$ a piece for them on ebay, i wonder if i still overpaid). Anyway, Once again, i appreciated your videos, and you have a new subscriber now :) -Sean-

Hi Shinkamui $10 for a IBM Virtual media keys,,, is very very cheap. I payed over $200 a piece for the first ones i got,,back in 2010 :-/ I have never tried to upgrade VCenter,,, i have no need to try it after reading your comment here :-) I am now updating the Hostes instead of a total reinstall. If you have some good Haks,, do tell :-) Thank you for watching! :-)

Hi Dávid Grochal You found that : I recently started using esxi 6.0 with free licence quite surprised that the free licence restriction to 1 physical core... I also have older server that has 2 physical processors and 2 core each one. I would not this somehow solve, Optionally I would like to select a different hypervisor... That is not so,, i do not know how you came to that,, but here is a nice link to what you get with the free ESXi 6.0 www.virten.net/2015/03/free-esxi-6-0-how-to-download-and-get-license-keys-features-and-limitations/ Limitations: *No support *Free ESXi cannot be added to a vCenter Server *2 physical CPUs *Unlimited cores per CPU *Unlimited physical Memory *max. 8 vCPU per VM Thank you for watching! :-)

First of all, congratulations for your playhouse and videos! I really enjoy them!!! I'm interested in this post since I tried to install VMware ESXi 5.1 but I was not successful. finally I got an error: "VMware ESXi requires the execute Disable/No execute CPU feature to be enabled. It has two core intel xeon E5430. Would I need to upgrade them to X5450 or it would not be necessary. Thanks so much

Hi Dechoir Thank You very much! No you are all fine,, It is just a Bios setting for the CPU you need to enable. communities.vmware.com/thread/525453 You can install ESXi 6.5 on the x3650 M1 it does work !! Thank you for watching! :-)

After having watched your videos I just bought a X3650 M3 with 2 X5650 CPUs. I put the IBM version Hypervisor 5.5 off of IBM's website on it. Does having the IBM version help with these servers? I noticed that you just installed the 6.0 version directly from VMWARE and not the IBM enhanced version?

Hello there. I have a question for you about frontend virtualization software. I saw lots of datacenters using vmware but none of them were telling me why is so widely used when it comes to virtualization and vdatacenters in general. Personally I use solusvm with a openvz master and lots of openvz/kvm slaves. Should I start using vmware ?
@MyPlayHouse9 жыл бұрын
Hi Sorin SanduThis is indeed close to being religion.. :-) i have been using VM-ware since around April 2004,, where VMware Workstation 4.5 came out. And the ESXi since 4.0 i think. so it is old habit. I think it is so widely used, because it is so simple to set up. As you can see in my video is really easy. The free version can much of the basics. but it becomes really smart when you install a vCenter. I promised someone else to make the video, so that it is on the way,, but I'm busy doing other projects currently. If you have the time, I think you should try VM-ware ESXi, I do not know solusvm and openvz,,, so I can not compare and give you the pros and cons. Thank you for watching! :-)
@PaFeliePixel9 жыл бұрын
Morten Hjorth Well openvz is just a virtualization method that supports just linux os's at the moment and solusvm its the web control panel for the master and all the slave servers running various methods of virtualization ( xen, openvz, kvm ). Btw you're welcome and i'll always watch you're videos, great content !

I've tried installing esxi multiple times it keeps restarting after the "loading esxi installer" screen. I dont have an internal drive but I have a 200gb drive in the drivebay setup as a volume drive. Can you please suggest what I can do. I've tried selecting drive 0 or drive 1 after it restarts and it just goes the the black and white screen that indicates I should press f1 twice. When I do so nothing happens
