Well, he's probably going to say that since the black community is, as a whole, discriminated against, that this wouldn't be counted as racism but as a "present discrimination for past discrimination". What my question is trying to point out is, if one does not go out of their way to be anti-racist, Kendi's logic says that person is racist. It seems like there is no middle ground. For example, let's say a single parent is trying their hardest to take care of their children while taking on a part-time or even full-tim job. If that person doesn't have time to go out of their way to do anything about racism. Does it mean that person is racist? That is where I think Kendi's theory does not add up.

So either they're lying or they really are trying to treat everyone equally but the larger society has barriers which make equal treatment difficult. So if someone claims they are not a bigot, and racial inequities continue, they are "lying" in your mind. The biggest problem of all is that the liberal mainstream media (and I'm a lifelong liberal by the way) and most liberals have just accepted this new definition of "racism" that has nothing to do with anyone disliking anyone or being bigoted in any way. This is the huge problem with the term "systemic racism" as well and why it's so polarizing. The idea that because a "system" results in racially disparate outcomes, the system is "racist" doesn't make any sense when discussing our modern systems (post-1960s). If we are discussing large groups like "whites" and "blacks", then we can't simultaneously believe that "systemic racism" is causing blacks to do worse than whites (creating "racial inequities"), but a similarly giant group like "Asians" is doing better than whites. Or a similarly giant group like "Jews" is doing better than Catholics. They system we have now (post-1960s) is NOT racist or bigoted. In order to believe this, you have to ignore that this current system is resulting in non-white groups and non-Christian groups disproportionately doing better than whites. How is that possible? It's ONLY "racist" against blacks but favors Asians and Jews? And this is not a "model minority myth" either. Many modern liberals quickly - reflexively - toss that phrase out and it makes no sense either. If you are comparing giant groups like "blacks" and "whites" you can't suddenly start saying "Well not ALL Asians do well. That's a myth". But the minute someone brings an equally large group like Asians into the discussion liberals start pointing out that Asians aren't a monolith and some of them do poorly. Well, not all whites do well either! And not all blacks do poorly either! Nigerians do way better than African Americans in this country and they're immigrants! Liberals will say "Well that doesn't count because they're a self-selecting group" and they are, but why is our allegedly "racist" system failing to keep these particular blacks down in the same way it keeps African Americans down? Do police officers know on sight if someone is Nigerian or African American? Culture is playing a role here. And the way modern liberals argue is sophistry and a dishonest way of argument. If we are comparing giant groups (and people like Kendi and his promoters are) "Asians" DO better than whites. That can't be denied Jews also do better than everyone. What is causing those disparities? Some kind of bigotry? I think not. Cultural differences matter (see the disparate outcomes between Nigerians and African Americans); so does class (which people like Kendi barely discuss); and so do individual choices. And by the way, Kendi doesn't just want to "highlight" the problem of racism. His solutions are overtly racist themselves. He believes that the only way to fix things is to discriminate against whites (and Asians and any group that does better than blacks). Forget about a meritocracy: his solution is that every member of every group is forced to do as badly as whatever group is the lowest performer. He opposes anything that African Americans don't do as well as whites in, like standardized tests. So he also thinks ALL children should be graded on "their desire to know". This is lunacy. How is that going to work exactly? How do STEM schools decide who to accept? This guy sucks at engineering but he really wants to know so let's let him in and have him graduate and start building bridges? He also believes in creating a governmental "anti-racist" cabinet composed of people like him who can't be removed from office and will screen every single police for "racism" and have the power to junk those policies. His fascistic and racist beliefs are only hidden by his promoters - the likes of CBS Sunday Morning. Read his writings - it's all there. And it's why I no longer trust mainstream media or Democrats on topics like race. They lie by omission constantly.

Systemic racism permeates throughout this society. A society socially stratified upon the past enslavement and abuse of Black people as an accepted social norm still caries these values of devaluing and dehumanizing black people today. The Cross Bronx expressway destroyed many black neighborhoods financially. Where Central Park NYC is today was a black owned neighborhood. The govt took their property yes they got money for it but the destruction of the community and generational wealth lost is immeasurable. In California just this month awarded a 20 million dollar property that was stolen from a back family using eminent domain. In the 1900s they bought the beach front property paying $1200 but it was stolen using eminent domain because the whites in the area objected to them owning such land. Black people do well despite all of the roadblocks that many others do not face. In corporate America today if you go to any office and look at the workers sitting at their desk you will not see one black person working at some of these companies. New employee at these huge corporations get 120k plus as a starting salary. You will see black people at the security desk, cleaning the floors, in the cafeteria, driving execs to work etc. Many of these black people went to college. This is systematic racism at the corporate level. Just because you did well coming here does mean it’s fair for black people. I did ok but it does not mean I can’t be honest about how this society works. Systemic racism needs to end.

You are oversimplifying a complex issue. Education in this country is not, nor has it ever been, equal. Due to the legacy of historical practices like red lining, poor children, especially children of color, do not receive equal education in a school in a poor area vs. a wealthy neighborhood. Even in states such as California, Asian and Latino students have been segregated during the 20th Century. Furthermore, funding for education, pay for teachers, and investment in the best practices from research for teaching subjects is predicated on property taxes. Public Schools in wealthy areas like Silicon Valley have innovative STEM programs for children, starting at a young age. Their parents often enroll them in expensive extra enrichment and tutoring programs. Poor Latino and Black Children living in lower-income communities don't get the same opportunities in school or the same support and enrichment after school. Plus, the parents of poor and working-class children are often WORKING at night or are exhausted and cannot help their children with Math homework as much as a wealthy, stay-at-home mother. Lower test scores are the result of the long shadow of racist education, housing, and employment policies coupled with less educational support now.

Black Nigerians do much better than African-Americans: how does "racism" explain that disparity? Also: Asians (since we're talking about groups on a giant scale between "white" and "black") do better than whites: how does "racism" explain that? If Catholics DID better than Jews (they don't), you could chalk that up to "systemic anti-Semitism" since there are still plenty of examples of it, but that would be wrong. It has nothing to do with "inferior" and "superior" (more simplistic reductionism): it has to do with the choices individuals and giant groups (like "whites", "blacks" and "Asians" if you want to go that route) make collectively on average. This epitomizes the slanted and warped way mainstream media and reinforces incredibly bad and even dangerous ideas. Not a word is said about Kendi's belief that we need to discriminate against whites. He's very clear about this: “The only remedy to racist discrimination is antiracist discrimination. It has to do with the choices people make, and the collective choices any given group is likely to make. If disparities were proof of racism, then the system is "racist" against Christian whites and in favor of "Asians" and "Jews" (since we're talking about "whites" and "blacks" as giant uniform blocks). It would also mean that the "playing field" is specifically racist against African Americans and less racist against Nigerians and Jamaicans who do better than they do as well. There are disparities everywhere and it's not about "inferior" or "superior", it's about the hundreds of choices people make and yes, it's also about differences in cultural values. If there is a group that is besieged by violent criminals at a hugely disproportionate rate, drops out of high school at a disproportionate rate, gets pregnant before marriage at a disproportionate rate, majors in lower-paying college courses at a disproportionate rate, then guess what: that group is going to have... Surprise! disparities! This ideology is self-destructive and dangerous as well. What does it do to an African American's child motivation to be repeatedly taught that any "system" that is not actively discriminating against whites in their favor (i.e. engaged in Kendi's definition of "anti-racism") is racist against them? I helped found a technology business in Ghana in the 1990s, I was the only white person in many situations I found myself in. The only problem I every experienced over 5 years in the 90s was old racists who hated white people, generally they were in government or university settings. The hard working people in the outlying areas were not racist like the "academics". Racism is born of ignorance and prejudice is the story we hear yet I have found highly educated people like Kendi to be more racist than the guy working on the farm. It seems that academics don't have enough to do on a daily basis.

Individuals make choices and when studied as a giant collective group of "whites", "blacks" or "Asians", different groups make different choices on average for various reasons - one of them being different cultural norms and values which are generally more or less promoted within the group. Asian students spend more time studying and doing homework than whites do. And whites spend more time studying and doing homework than blacks do. Do you not think that is not going to create disparities? Blacks are also disproportionately likely to commit violent crimes (by alot); drop out of high school; have babies before they can afford it (out of wedlock means one income); choose college majors that don't create alot of income). Blacks are also disproportionately likely to be POOR - a fact about class that idiots like Kendi and his mainstream promoters have little time to address since they focus entirely on race. The minute you start doing a multi-variate analysis of these issues, the disparities start falling away. A multi-variate analysis at least tries to take into account all the other factors that go into outcomes like poverty, but for Kendi and those who promote him, all they care about is race "white" vs. "black". After all, if they didn't ,they might get called a racist on twitter and risk losing their jobs.

The point is that most people unavoidably think about race. The point is that suppressing those thoughts would be much harder than simply combating the negative thoughts. If you really think focusing on race will make you more racist that’s on you lol

I was really surprised at number of comments that used a righteous relative or negative reaction to this piece. This didn't "blast" an opinion or judgment, but to insecure people it is construed as such. Great! Old white guy raised in a challenging time - living in peace then and now in an integrated world. A battlefield, doesn't judge or even concern the brave ones beside you....I am told...a vet
