Watch how I install this door:
• How To Install A Door ...
I have seven of these to make for the main floor of my house. While money can be saved by making these yourself, there is a lot of work involved, so you should consider that before taking it on. My reasons for doing this are mainly because I'll end up with doors that are much better quality than the typical hollow core doors you get from the retailers. Also, I have the freedom to make them exactly how I want, as plain or as fancy as needed to match the decor.
The older door installation video:
Part 1: • How To Hang A Door

Here are some ways that you can help support the work I do in making these videos:

As videos go this on sits at the top: no BS, no fluff, no waste of time with stupid sxxt intros, it's right down to the matter, which is what viewers spending lots of time in youtube looking for info on fixing their cars or making a door... are looking for. It's not rocket science but it is not a common practice either. Secondly, this straightforward tutorial gave me an idea I didn't have to skip the pricey manufactured MDF interior doors in the style that I love, Shaker. Thank you!

After watching the video advert i was still skeptical. But when i finally downloaded the plans kzbin.infoUgkxZF0EMnrujZvqHhGkxiz559uIABJWR9TG i was very impressed. The whole plan was just as you said in the video. Thank you very much. I now have a large and valuable collection for my woodworks. This is great!

Hey John thanks so much for this video! I just completed mine and it turned out just as you built it. The only thing I did differently was to use Birch plywood to the customer's request. It was so easy to construct just as you showed in your video

I've been looking forward to making one of these for years. I'm finally able to start. I have an inconvenient door between the living room and a seasonal room/sun room. The original door is a freakish cut-down of what used to be a mobile home main entrance door...and it is 40 years old. Ugly, not fully functional...but still useful for temperature control and privacy. I have a complicated idea that this video has helped solidify. Maybe a ridiculous idea...but...I have time. LOL. Desired Features: 1. Easily removable. Sometimes we don't want the door at all for a while. 2. Split: Top and bottom can open separately or be 4. removed separately. 3. Insulated: When it is closed it is because it is very cold or very hot in the seasonal room. 4. Window in Top half. 5. Removable insulating panel for top half, Stored in/on bottom half. 6. It doesn't really need to have a knob/lock...just some kind of pressure fit closure would work...like it has now. Wish me luck. Haha.

I love this.. I bought an old home (built in the 1930s) that has seen some renovations that left me with a bunch of awful cardboard torsion box style interior doors, until I saw this I had resigned myself to either paying out the nose for solid wood doors new, or to spending every free moment out trying to source appropriately sized antique doors... After watching this two weeks back I am already three of five doors in, and my technique has improved with each one. Thanks!

@Don Perkins The first one did, because I didnt have a truly flat assembly area. However, you know what makes a perfectly flat assembly area for doors? Two of the crappy doors I was replacing, put one on the sawhorses and glued the other one to it, head to foot, every door after that has come out perfect.

My Dad was a builder, and made doors, especially one for a school tuck shop. But he didn't just use wood or plywood; he put in a steel panel. Made them much more robust. Even resists a fencepost used as a battering ram.

I liked the build, but I'm concerned about mounting the hinges into the ends, as in concerned that it will split or the door won't hold up. Since this was a while ago, how'd they fair?

Thanks for sharing. Great process, but I didn't catch the plywood thickness you used. I assume it is 1/2" since it looks like it next to the 2 sheets of 1/2" you placed on the table. That comes to 1.5" thickness, which seems fine. But overall, I feel that doors can be made in a number of ways, but the reason certain ways are preferred is due to the warping issue. To me, an important test of whether a door-making method is good, is if the door does not warp over time. What say you on this? I assume plywood is somewhat stable, but it certainly does warp during storage, I find.

I've built many applique type doors over the years. For interior doors I use MDF, it lays really flat and mills easily. It doesn't have a ply core to cover with trim or edge banding. I do recommend sanding down the cut edges of MDF before painting to achieve a smooth finish. For exterior doors never use MDF, instead MDO works quite well but you will need to treat the plywood core with some type of edging material. The next time I build an exterior door of MDO, I do plan to experiment with an epoxy type paint to treat the core. If someone has tried this before please let us know how it worked out for you, I'm very interested.

Hi Ken, do you think I can make the same door the same way John is doig here but use MDF? Doesn't the mdf need some sort of solid wood trim for the lock and the hinges to go on? Or is MDF strong enough by itself? Hope you can answer. Thanks in advance,

Someone help me. I built a "door" and I cant figure out why I cant get it to not wobble/twist. Like when I close it say by pushing the top it should be firm and not twist. Maybe I need to use harder wood? Its definitely square but maybe the structure could be built better (but how?) idk. So frustrating 🤦‍♂️

I dig the attachment you did to your Clamps. So all you did was add some Wood to them ... and basically you not only have more then just the one spot it would apply pressure, but the whole wood adds pressure and ... of course since now wood applies pressure and not the round steel ... its good for the workpiece. Hmm, need to upgrade a few of my clamps this way too.
