A no holds barred, cage match between the Icom IC-7000 vs the IC-7100. See how these two great mobile HF/VHF/UHF radios stack up beside each other in an unscripted competition. Who will win, Team Tommy or Team George?

I personally own a 7000 and love it. I also have two 7100s in my office and am very impressed by them. I have heard people complain about digging in the menus to find features on the mike. I think most people don't use the buttons on the mike. Personally, I use the mike buttons quite a bit and ordered the HM-151 mikes for the 7100s. Other than the additional expense, the mike has no advantage on the 7000. The 7100 is the clear ease-of-use winner for those that don't want to read hundreds of pages of manual.

When Icom discontinued the IC-7000 they shot themselves in the privates! Moronic move without offering something better to take it's place - of the SAME GENRE! I love mine, (new driver board) & plan to buy 5-10 more over the next year or three.

Interestingly, the older model's display looks leaps better than than the new IC-7100 model. I think they were trying to use LEDs similar the the once popular IC-706 series, however the IC-7000 display was fantastic for a small sized mobile rig.

IC-7100 Looks cool but the only Useful feature I see over the 7000 is the D-Star, I personally owned a 7000 for many years and a lot of the functions can be done easily from the microphone, which they chose to leave out of the video. Also I imagine trying to accurately touch the right spot on a touch screen while driving down the road could be difficult, especially if you don't have little fingers.

Im still keeping an eye out for a good used 7000 Icom really left an opening in the market for Yaesu to fill with the 7000's form factor and HF/VHF/UHF. Its a simple radio thats not too bulky. If Icom re released the 7000 but with GPS and DStar it would sell out every where Keep everything else the same.

I brought a brand new Icom 7000 back in 2006-7 and loved it then regret selling it. Definitely 100% the Icom 7000 over the 7100 all day no discussion. I've just recently brought another 7000 used but in superb condition to go alongside my Icom 756Pro 3 as well as use it mobile of course. I personally think Icom let them selfs down when they released the 7100 because as some others have said it looks more like it's been designed for base station use than mobile because of the hefty display and big main unit, either way, I'll always be an Icom fan over any other make of radios whatever they decided to manufacture. They should make an upgraded version of the 7000 as the 7100 definitely isn't that but Icom if you ever read this please please bring out a radio very similar to the 7000 with a few extras e.g touch screen, more watts, etc or even bring back the 7000 again but as always keep up the great work and your already superb customer sales\after sales.

I have also wondered for a long time the operation of "REF Adjust" in menu number 51. When I speak in USB with other people I have to modify the "REF Adjust" when the frequency is always the same in VHF and UHF. In HF there are no differences in USB in "REF Adjust". I've always wondered why that option exists in the menu

For $1600 (street price), I would expect the 7100 to have a color touch display or at least a video output. Im not liking the face design as it feels more like it was designed for base station use, than mobile use. Other than that, overall I like the capabilities of the 7100

so, other than D-star and the interface, is there any features that the 7100 has that the 7000 doesn't? i'm considering either of these, or possibly a yaesu 857D. budget is around 600/700$ for a used model. my main thing is, does either have a better filter than the other? or is it almost identical radio?
@Westy-1
@Westy-1 4 жыл бұрын
I'd totally recommend getting the Icom 7000 over the 7100 any day without hesitation and the 7000 has more than enough features. Definitely don't go for a Yaesu 857D as they lack a lot in comparison to the 7000 and even 7100. I believe that the filters used in the 7000 are those used in the Icom 7800 reading up on the 7000 and that's a £10000 radio. Hope this helps.

Gentlmen, I need a little advice from you. I own both the 7000 and 7300. I get reports that the 7000 has a dull audio, too much bass, no midrage and high frequencies, just the oposite reports for the magnificent audio of the 7300. Can you recommend something to get rid of all this dull modulation? Thank you and 73 de SV1SLB

There's a write up about this issue on the 7000 it states the following settings: MIC Gain 50%. Comp set to 5. 100Hz as the low freq cutoff. 2900Hz as the high freq cutoff. I recommend trying these settings first failing that you can try the Icom MH-151 Mod below. Optional modification for the Icom MH-151 Microphone of replacing the C30 ceramic capacitor. The C30 capacitor should be replaced with a 0,22 F SMD ceramic capacitor called C3216X7R1H224K. Size/type is 3216 or 1206 (3,2 x 1,6 mm). (also named C1206C224K5RAC C-7025) ELFA part number : 65-777-04 Replace the C30 capacitor. It is a bipolar capacitor, so there is no + or - on it. After the Mic Mod use the following settings: Mic gain at 80 - 100 %, COMP on level 1 only. Try these setting for transmitter bandwidth (TBW): W(L) 100 W(H) 2900 W= Ragchew M(L) 200 M(H) 2900 M= DX N(L) 300 N(H) 2700 N= DX (sounds almost like Heil HC-4) This way you will have good settings for both Ragchew and DX. Only use COMP if necessary Note ! If your IC-7000 has been modified internally (microphone preamp.) you will probably not notice any difference with this modification. This is the case with most IC-7000 radios sold in Scandinavia. They sound good in SSB-mode, but a little low on bass in FM-mode. There is no need to modify these radios any further (leave them as they are). If you on the other hand are planning on buying a new IC-7000, ask for an unmodified radio (microphone preamp.) but let the dealer replace the C30 capacitor inside the HM-151 for you.

Honestly, you guys took a step back in screen quality with the 7100. It was released, what, 7 years after the 700, but the screen makes it look like it's from the mid '90s. The form factor is just awkward for mobile use too. You should release a new version of the 7100 for mobile use, because the 7000 just isn't up to that task.

Hi All, i wonder if anyone on the Planet Earth knows how to adjust the frequency settings on an IC 7000, presumably inside the radio, the REF ADJUST in the menu is set to maximum and it still isn't anywhere near, perfect on HF but 1 khz off on 2mts and 2 khz off on 70 cms on TX and RX, it seems a closely guarded secret by Icom, not in the repair manual, if you adjust the main oscillator setting it throws HF out....any offers please....please dont say turn the tuning knob hi.....from Fred g4vvq in England.

I have a 7000 but never cared much about it. I find the multi-level menus on ic-7000 very confusing. The receiver sucks on 6, 2m and 1.25m bands. It's not the greatest on HF either whick makes the radio a poor choice as a base station. TX audio quality is way below average with the factory supplied microphone. DSP filters suck too. The only reason I kept it as a mobile rig is because of it's powerful NB pulse noise blanker. Everything else is much better on my FT-857d, especially VHF/UHF performance. The IC-7000 gets awfully hot, even if i'm listening only. I tried running Digital with 30 Watts only and it got terribly hot. My FT-857d does at the same power level without a problem. I've been thinking about selling my IC-7000 and buying a new IC-7100. I have use a 7100 and was very impressed with it's performance. The LCD screen can be read a lot easier in direct sunlight. Touch screen is a huge plus because it makes it a lot more user friendly. actually I'm thinking of ordering one today since they are only $839 (Dayton special).

Kewl Beans The whole industry is about to be turned on its head. SDR is going to make a lot of older radios drop drastically in price. Heck, you can now buy a $20 dongle that will function as a full receiver, and with a nice antenna, it picks up bands that these receivers cannot. We are on the edge of a pretty big change in things. I'm sort of afraid to buy a new radio now.
