Great video, thank you for sharing. I have an IC-705 related question. I can see MacDoppler adjusting the receiver frequency in your video, does it also do the same for transmit? Are you just using a (fixed) VFO split for the latter?

MacDoppler does control both uplink and downlink VFOs independently almost simultaneously (it switches back and forth quickly between VFOs). It's more noticeable on 70cm because the frequency changes quickly, but the 2 meter side doppler shift is slower. Thanks for the feedback!

@@tekspeditionplanet9109 Thanks for coming back to me. I found my issue - I'd selected IC-705 as it is now available as an option in radio config. Updating that to IC-7000 as per your video now sets VFO B with the uplink frequency and updates it.

@@thehyperintelligentslug very interesting. I wonder why, if they created a specific configuration for the 705, that it would not manage the split frequencies. Anyway, glad the IC-7000 setting worked for you.

@@thehyperintelligentslug I contacted the developer about that and he made an adjustment to the software. You now can use the IC-705 selection on the radio tab and get cross-band ops. Beginning with version 2.44beta.

Great video and I subscribed. I chase FM satellites with a Wouxun 8D Plus and an Arrow antenna. I am reasonably successful with this inexpensive rig. How do you control your antenna?

Thanks for the comment! I control the antenna with my hand. If you watch my "Elk antenna adapter" video I show how I orient my antenna by hand using a drone landing pad with compass degrees painted around the edge. Fairly simple setup. I have a full, automatic satellite station with an IC-9700 and a Yaesu G-5500 antenna azimuth/elevation rotator, but I wanted to make this video about easy operation in portable mode.

Good luck! If you have issues with MacDoppler not populating both frequencies, download the latest beta version (2.44beta or later) and it should work fine.

I just received my IC-705 yesterday and am getting it all set up. This is something I am wanting to try to do, but is there a Windows version of the software to do the Doppler to work the satellites with? I am normally a Mac person, but my MacBook Pro went down during the lockdown and I can not get it fixed so I had to replace it with a ToughBook running Windows 10 Pro for my field work.

My Windows option is Ham Radio Deluxe. There is a free version, but I paid for a license. It has a satellite module that does tracking, rig control, and rotor control.

Thanks for this video. I might have to give this a try with my ELK. Do you adjust the antenna at all during the pass or do you set the heading and elevation once and leave it?

Elevation doesn’t change a lot unless the ISS goes directly overhead. I do tweak azimuth every few minutes to keep the antenna pointed in the right direction. I read the azimuth off MacDoppler, or whatever your favorite tracking software is. The drone landing pad with azimuth headings painted around the edge is a real help.

Yes, I could only use what was operational on the ISS at the time. I did another video about SSTV from the ISS. When they switch back to APRS I will make another video.

@@tekspeditionplanet9109 Thanks, make sure you use MacDoppler, thats the challenge actually. Running a native Mac application for ISS tracking, doppler control and APRS QSO. Good luck! Easy to do on Win, but not on the Mac.

Running this program my 705 does track the down frequency but the up frequency is way off and not tracking ! do I have a setting wrong? I do have the split VFO button pushed! And it is transmitting on the other VFO just on the wrong frequency. Thanks

Sorry for the late response! Yes, I lost connectivity as well, but I contacted the developer and he's made adjustments. Please download the latest beta version (v2.44beta or later). Works fine again, I just made contacts through the ISS yesterday with my IC-705. Just make sure to have the radio turned on before opening MacDoppler. 73!

Some people do use the IC-705 to transmit and a separate HF receiver for downlink. Doing it that way allows full duplex communication. Others have made KZbin videos about doing that.

With a PC I use Ham Radio Deluxe (HRD), but I don't know if they have a configuration for the 705. I use HRD with my IC-9700. I believe they still have a free version. I bought a copy and the software is very rich in features. There are other satellite tracking apps out there.
