Thanks for sharing. I have the IC-7100 radio in my 01 Jeep XJ. I have a link to a video of the results of my install on my KA0KAE QRZ page. I have a LDG tuner and transmit to Shark Distributing ham sticks. I find it does a great job almost as well as my IC-7300 on a EFHW-8010 antenna. A net I frequent on 20 meters have given me great signal reports. So good I have had some contact me via email to get my recipe. Nothing special but it works. BTW I did swap the microphone out for a HM-219 from a IC-7300. Not sure it helps. I think it does...but the money I spent isn't quite sure though... Kevin from Minnesota KA0KAE

Fantastic video series! I have learned more watching your videos than I could have ever learned from reading the manual. I do live full time in an RV an do use the 7100, I love it. I have been battling with figuring out how to get onto HF bands without an antenna farm. This idea and rig you have with the twin antennas is brilliant ! Could you please provide more detail as how you connected the coax? What tuner do you use ? Etc... thank you so much for what your doing. 73’s KR4OWE Florence SC .

Thanks for the kind words. We’re about to be moving into a new house in a few days. So there may be a little delay in the next several videos. I will definitely look into doing a more detailed video on the antenna setup.

I've had the 7100 for some time but not much had it on air. This past weekend I put it into a mobile van that I like to use and have it with a tarheel II, which I was using with my 857D, which is in an office. So the antenna, two 8' whip and a tuner seems to do well... I may be moving the rig into a mini motor home I am rebuilding ... lots of work and sometime away. I could use the tarheel and park and camp and use the two 8' thing ... I wonder what would happen just connecting a long wire to the tarheel and tune at parked camping ... I don't know if it would work. .. well.

Thank you so much for the 7100 videos, they help a lot! Could you do a video on the SD card stuff? And maybe on the ALC aswell! vy73 de OE1MEW

Another great IC-7100 video. At about the 1:30 mark in the video you explain your use of two 'untuned' Ham Sticks. Are you referring to two antennas like a 20 meter and a 40 meter? Are you using one antenna at a time depending which band you are using? If so, how do you switch between antennas/bands? Michael

Hi Michael. When I mentioned "untuned whips", I was referring to the 2 8ft. stainless steel whips in the picture. Those are not ham-sticks and they're not tuned for any particular frequency. (although they're pretty close for 10 meters) The MFJ and similar mounts were mainly designed for making a physically short dipole using 2 identical ham-stick antennas for a specific band. I have used the mount with 2 40 meter ham-stick mobile whips and also with 2 20 meter ham-stick whips to make very short dipoles. With the 2 8 ft. whips, I just connect it to a tuner and I can cover every band from 40 through 10 meters. The 8 ft whips are a little short to tune up on 80 meters. This allows me to switch bands virtually instantly, without having to bring down the antenna to change ham-sticks. The price I pay is a little more loss in the coax, which is why I mention keeping the coax run as short as possible.

what hand mic (that's not the one that comes standard) and what MFJ tuner do you have?

The mic is the HM-151 remote control mic. I just did a separate video about that. You can find it here: IC-7100 A to Z #17 HM-151 Remote Control Mic kzbin.info/www/bejne/ioCzmI1vrLOmja8 For a tuner I mostly use the MFJ939i. I’ve been pretty happy with it.

Maybe this is a crazy question, but do you know of any 'kit' that makes it so the front panel can be 'attached' to the main body of the rig? I know it sorta defeats the purpose of one of the main 'features' of this rig, but I can also think of times/applications where having it as a unified whole (a'la the IC-7000) might be preferable. Just curious if that's even possible. Thanks!

Hi Tim. I don't think it's a crazy question. I have had the same thought. Although I'm not sure that there is an answer that wouldn't be a little awkward. I'm quite sure there isn't anything from Icom and I haven't seen any commercial 3rd party solutions. Admittedly, I haven't really looked for anything like that. There is a mobile mounting bracket for the base. So, it seems like a bracket could be fabricated that would use the mobile mounting bracket holes and would hold the remote head above or in front of the main unit. Please let me know if you find something or come up with something on your own. 73, Tom
