notes: - your brain is really good at forgetting things, usually what it thinks is irrelevant (such as the license plate to random cars). - There are two pathways that information gets processed - to retain or forget. - We retain the information that we see as relevant to us in some way. It has to have relationship with something you already remember vs information thats perceived to be isolated. - Information priority: when you're prioritizing understanding/memorizing new information. It is going down the isolated information pathway and will be harder to retain. - Relationship priority: Instead you should prioritize forming connections with other things you already know. This speeds up the retention process. - Our brain will form relationships after we have retained the information anyways - but we can also do that first. - Regularly self check when you're studying whether you're prioritizing information or relationships. - Form relationships why asking questions like - "Why is this important?" "How is it related?" "How to apply it?" "How is it relevant" etc - When we form relationships first, it organizes the info like a map in our brain and makes it easier to apply and more accessible. Great advice! Sorta goes in line with what memorization experts say which is to create a story in you brain with the new information to help retain it. This sorta goes a step further by further engaging with the knowledge rather than just for retention purposes.

The school system is amazing at just throwing in information over and over again and promoting endless note-taking, of which I can barely remember the topic or any subtopics, let alone other information by the end of the class. There definitely is still a time and a place for other techniques but relational learning should be promoted much more often. I don't understand why they can't just talk to us for 3 minutes before each lesson with an example of how this fits in.

Have your sins been forgiven today and forever? Think about this. The God of the Bible, the One True God made You and I to worship him, obey Him, and enjoy Him forever. But You and I break His laws daily. You, like me, are not good at all in the eyes of God. ‘There is no one good, no not even one. (Romans3:10) ‘For all have sinned and fall short of The Glory of God’ (Romans 3:23) You have always done wrong in the eyes of God, this is a problem because Psalm 5:5 reads: ‘...You [GOD] hate all who do wrong.’ ‘But because of your stubbornness and your unrepentant heart, you are storing up wrath against yourself for the day of God’s wrath, when his righteous judgment will be revealed.’ Rom 5:5 The person who sins is the one who will die. Ezekiel 18:20 All these things and more are counted against us. God is the just judge of the world and one day He will judge you, and you are guilty. He will settle the score for all the wrongs you've done. God is holy meaning He is righteous (morally perfect in thought, word, and deed) It also means He is set apart and infinitely higher than us. God will punish You for all Your sin or wrongdoing in the world, this is because He is Good and Just Judge. This means that if You sin ONCE, God will cast you in hell for eternity. Because He is good and He doesn't turn a blind eye to sin. So how can God forgive you and me of all our sins? But there is good news. 2000 years ago Jesus the Son of God came into this world and lived a perfect life ( He never sinned once) and He died on the cross taking the wrath that we deserve and paid the penalty for the sins we committed. The bible says that if you will repent (confess and forsake your sins) and trust in what Christ did on the cross OUT OF HIS LOVE FOR YOU-(He took the wrath of God against you for your evil deeds and thoughts). Then all your sins will be forgiven and when you die you will be in heaven with God and all who have believed in The Gospel of Jesus Christ. This is the true Gospel of Jesus: Jesus died( Bore the punishment for your evil sins and heart, so that you can be forgiven. He took your special spot in Hell) and on the third day, He rose from the grave(So that you can have true life and His spot next to The only true God.). Verses: ‘All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, and all are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by ChristJesus.’ Rom3:24; 'Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God.' John 3:18 Get right with God today, don't wait. Once you die after that comes the judgment. It's the most important thing you can do. If you repent and trust in what Christ did on the cross for You then you will be born again. Right now you're dead in your sins and you can't see the beauty of Jesus Christ but after you trust in Christ all the things you hate about God like obeying him, serving Him, loving Him and others, reading the bible, praying, and going to church, you will love to do those things because God changes your heart. That's how you know you have been born again and forgiven. Please think long about this, and most importantly please take at least 5 minutes a day to read the Bible. Start in 'Matthew'. An eternity in hell (darkness and a lake of fire the bible describes it, with weeping and gnashing of teeth) or an eternity in the loving arms of God who is infinitely glorious, has infinite knowledge and has infinite power and love to do all that He pleases. - We should focus on increasing retention instead of repeating information many times. - Our brain easily forgets isolated information. - Instead, we should focus on finding relationships between different concepts to produce higher retention rates. - Foster relationships by posing questions such as "What is the significance of this?" "How does it connect to other ideas?" "How can it be put into practice?" "What is its relevance?" etc.

Maximizing retention is key to efficient studying. Rather than focusing on relearning and revising forgotten information, the goal should be to retain it from the start. The traditional education system has conditioned students to prioritize memorization over understanding relationships between concepts. However, the brain is wired to retain information that is meaningful and interconnected. By shifting from an information priority to a relationship priority, students can improve their retention and understanding of the material. This involves thinking about how information is related to other concepts and organizing it accordingly. Utilizing techniques like mind maps and asking questions about the importance and relationships of information can facilitate this process. By adopting a relationship priority approach to learning, students can enhance their studying efficiency and improve their overall performance.

The relationship idea makes sense, and I feel I do a decent job of that naturally. There are situations though where I feel I need just a surface run-through of all the information before I can do relationship building or blocking the information. The two scenarios where I need those multiple exposures before building relationships is when the presentation of the information is not well done, and or the material is very foreign to me and the relationships are harder for me. Also, I think having an online of the work to actively work through before my first exposure to the material helps with the chunking and relationship process.

Yep, if it is well explained you can draw connections automatically. But I find most topics in class are given without context. This is where having a technique to draw connections yourself, comes in. Otherwise my mind just treats the info as irrelevant and forgets it

## Concise summary of Justin Sung teachings 1. **Set your Mindset**: Emphasize the importance of avoiding norms, focusing on the learning process rather than the outcome, assuming you might be wrong, and working smarter instead of just harder and embrace discomfort and challenge. 2. **Set Your Studying Environment**: Prepare your tools and resources to create an ideal working environment. 3. **Set Your Ideal Time for Work and Rest**: Optimize your productivity by finding the right balance between study and rest. 4. **Priming/Pre-study**: Before diving into detailed learning, get a general idea of the material by scanning headings, identifying knowledge gaps and creating a framework (mind map) 5. **Reading/Active Learning**: Actively engage with the material by asking questions, making connections, and using higher-order learning techniques (Blooms taxonomy) 6. **Improving Your Encoding/Increasing Cognitive Tolerance**: Focus on higher-order thinking early on, gradually increase cognitive tolerance, and critically reflect on your studying techniques. 7. **Spaced Repetition/Active Retrieval**: Utilize spaced repetition to enhance memory retention and revise material in various ways. 8. **Use Memorization Techniques as last resort**: Memorization techniques like Memory Environment or Method of Loci should be for isolated informations.

19:00 it's funny how we end up learning through relationships even when doing information priority, we just establish relationships between the small bits we remember in each new revision until we have a solid enough foundation to remember most of it. It "only" takes about 10x longer. As an addition, I think you can do information priority well when you have a very solid foundation on the subject. There is no reason to think about relationships when you have that foundation, because your brain will automatically understand the relationships. It would be counter productive to stop and take notes or think about the relationships. This is often possible when you have mastery over something and starts learning closely related information. This is likely because the cognitive load is lower. It's like putting on a perfectly fitting pair of gloves

Ironic that I'm taking notes on this left-to-right, top-to-bottom. Alas, a stop-gap until I've absorbed it (and especially applied it!). I think the video was a bit repetitive and could be a bit more concise ~ 10-15 mins or so. I really liked the example with photosynthesis and root structures, esp considering I'm learning about Carbon Cycles atm. Very cool stuff. I've heard of something similar to this before, though the chunking/grouping/categorisation was referred to as a "mental model" which had some central concepts and then branched out into a tighter interconnected web of knowledge, and from that were offshoots associations of trivia/curios. I also just accidentally discovered I can move between tabs by using shift+PgUp and shift+PgDn, so I've got that going for me I guess.

You decide. Truth is independent of human conviction, meaning that what you believe does not change the fact that Jesus is your only Hope! Have a wonderful day

Good analogy with mother cleaning your room (aka stuff that you throw at your brain) I have a good one too: in programming (modern programming languages), there is a thing called the "Garbage collector" When your program is running, it is activated automatically every few CPU cycles and what it does, it deletes every variable or object (aka memory allocation) that is not referenced or used anywhere anymore, to free up memory resources. So it is pretty interesting how this is similar to how our brain deals with "unreferenced" knowledge that we trying to store in it.

Thank you for your knowledge, as I will try to make more connections instead of simply trying to memorize.

Hey, really interesting video, thank you for sharing this knowledge. Isn't it too harsh on your brain though to try and remembering all the information you have to study ? As you say it's a force being able to forget stuff, do you advise having multiple approaches ? Like prioritizing relationships for more "universal" or important information, and prioritizing information for short term memory ? Or just apply prioritizing relationships to everything and let your brain adapt to being more "retainent"?

Verses: ‘All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, and all are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by ChristJesus.’ Rom3:24; 'Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God.' Also learning makes it possible for us to adapt to our enviroment. It creates mental represtations of our enviroment (our subjective reality) in order to predict events in the future and this process has grown more and more as we developed symbolic articulation. So in order to learn someone has to create a mental representation of the information first and then it can be optimized and consolidated for longer periods of time. Also its important to not forget the relevancy of the information because this is the indicator our brain needs to know if it should consolidate this information or delete it. (Use it or lose it) - So in conclusion -> create mental represantations of the information and make it relevant for your life! Happy learning

I’m a little confused as to how one would revise the information after they’ve learnt it. Even if they learn it with great relationships and it they remember it really well for months and months eventually they will forget it, so when that time comes they need to go over it again. When that happens should they just use the original source from which they learnt it from or is it better to take down the information and organise it according to the relationships that they have? Idk if this is in another one of your videos so I would appreciate if you could send me the link if that’s the case. Thank you

11.57 when we learn through a relational priority, your brain actually does something that's very interesting which is that the information gets processed much faster. It makes sense of the information and all the stuff that you would normally spend time doing like memorizing or trying to understand it deeply. your brain will still do that, we're not skipping the information step but it's that your brain can do it much faster than if you were to try to focus on it. so what i'm saying is that trying to focus on memorizing it actually makes it harder for your brain to memorize it, because your brain doesn't care about your intention. it simply cares about the relationships that it forms. so by creating more relationships it actually becomes easier to memorize it, and you'll find that when you do it this way you end up memorizing information without even trying to. not only that your understanding of it is deeper, because truly deep understanding is not just about how that information exists by itself. it's about how the information relates to and influences and affects other pieces of information .

I have been watching your videos and specially this topic of working in a better encoding technique seems to be what I really need to improve my studying. Although, it is still weird for me to just do the relationship together with the understanding. How can I relate something that I dont understand it or trying to understand? I will try to keep asking those 4 questions when studying to see if it helps. When you relate the information, do you do it a relationship about the topics you are studying? Or do you relate using analogies? If you use analogies, what kind? Personal stuff, other subjects? It feels that doing all those relationships in a meaningful way is really difficult that it would triple the time to study something.

An eternity in hell (darkness and a lake of fire the bible describes it, with weeping and gnashing of teeth) or an eternity in the loving arms of God who is infinitely glorious, has infinite knowledge and has infinite power and love to do all that He pleases. You decide. Truth is independent of human conviction, meaning that what you believe does not change the fact that Jesus is your only Hope! Have a wonderful day
