@@acarroll6842 lol... The west indies team is made up of players from the english speaking caribbean islands (Jamaica, Trinidad, Barbados etc), and not many baseball players come from our countries, as baseball is not really played here. However on the spanish speaking islands of Cuba, Dom Rep and Puerto Rico, beisball is the most popular sport and that is where most MLB players come from, along with some other countries in Latin America like Venezuela, Nicaragua, Panama etc... In most other countries of Latin America, football aka soccer, is king of sports...

Jomboy started making "Explaining Cricket with Baseball Terms" videos about two years ago, and I've been hooked ever since. In fact, I may even go so far as to say that his videos were a little more comprehensive, especially regarding how to interpret the score bug. If a non-baseball fan were to look at a baseball bug, I reckon it'd be pretty confusing---a tiny baseball diamond, some bases with different colors (runners), an up or down arrow followed by a number (inning), pitch count (balls/strikes), a seperate pitch count (pitcher's count), one yellow dot next to a white dot (outs per inning), etc etc. Once I understood the basic gameplay and the cricket score bug, I WAS ALL IN ON THIS AMAZING SPORT. I can't get enough of it! Thanks, Jimmy!

Hahah yeah, baseball is pretty weird in general because so much is rooted in tradition for tradition's sake. Obviously, there are the obvious things like foul pole vs. fair pole and the asymmetry of most fields. But then you have terms like wild pitch, which is about is straightforward in its descriptiveness, vs. passed ball, which is often a strike. One of my favorites, thanks to the rise in popularity of the slash line in the last 20 years, is that we say batting average but we say slugging percentage and on-base percentage. Yet neither of the latter two are percentages. (As it is, I always say slugging average and on-base average for that reason.)

@6thwilbury2331 Haha, seriously! It's humiliating how many times I've had to look up how all of those stats are calculated. And you'd think that after watching the sport for 46 years I'd be able to remember which position is which number (pitcher/1, catcher/2, etc.), but I still have to think about it for way too long. 🤦‍♂️ Good lord. I tried to explain the basics to my friend from Georgia (the country, not the US state) and she stopped me before I was even finished describing the strike zone. 🤣

Myth - Game of Cricket go on for days Fact - Cricket has 3 international formats - Test (5days, 90 overs per day) ODI (50 overs each side) T20 (20 overs each side) On an Average 1 over takes about 5 mins. 1 over contains 6 legal deliveries. Wide, no ball are considered extras, bowling team is penalized for it and batting team get extra runs and extra ball to play.

Test match cricket is the purest form of the game. This T20 stuff is good for getting new fans into the game, but I’ll always rate the long form. A batsman digging in for an innings, concentrating over hours knowing one slip up and his innings is done. A bowler having to be patient, setting up a batsman with stock delivery after stick delivery before throwing down the one that moves away or swings in or rises on the batsman. The ultimate test of technique and concentration

Cricket may look same to Baseball but the biggest difference between cricket and baseball is the physics involved in bowling of ball which starts from 1)holding the ball in a specific fashion. 2)releasing the balls in a specific fashion . 3)energy put into throwing the ball which bouncing the ball off the ground in specific fashion ,which is is dependent on first 3 factors described above and physics is involved in all this and pitch = rectangular shaped grassless patch on cricket ground on which ball bounces is also the biggest factor to how ball reacts on releasing and reaching the batsman (batter).

@@lalakersproHuh? That’s illogical. Did you mean to say that you never got into baseball? Why would your parents watching cricket deter you from getting into cricket? I would think that the opposite would apply. You are more likely to be into cricket BECAUSE your parents watch cricket. You were talking about your parents watching cricket and then said that it’s boring. Is cricket boring for you or were you talking about baseball? Or were you trying to say (but in a very muddled manner) that cricket is boring AND baseball is unskilled? Care to explain? Baseball skills are somewhat different to cricket skills but I wouldn’t say that “baseball has no skill”. I’m a cricket fan, myself. Particularly test cricket and where Australia is involved. Test cricket can be boring for the uninformed but for those of us with the knowledge, a test match can be enthralling with all of its subtleties, variations, tactics, skills and endurance played out over the 5 days of play.

### 1. **Basic Overview** Start with a brief overview of cricket, highlighting similarities and differences with baseball: - Both are bat-and-ball sports with two teams taking turns to bat and field. - In cricket, each team has 11 players, and the game can last much longer than a baseball game, ranging from a few hours (Twenty20) to several days (Test cricket). ### 2. **Field and Positions** Explain the cricket field and positions: - The cricket field is typically oval-shaped with a 22-yard pitch in the center. - Highlight the key fielding positions, especially the bowler, wicketkeeper, and fielders placed around the field. ### 3. **Gameplay Basics** Detail the structure of the game: - **Innings**: Unlike baseball, a cricket match consists of one or two innings per team depending on the format. - **Scoring**: Runs are scored by hitting the ball and running to the opposite end of the pitch or by hitting the ball to the boundary (4 runs) or over the boundary (6 runs). - **Dismissals**: Explain common ways to get out - bowled, caught, run out, LBW (Leg Before Wicket), and stumped. ### 4. **Batting and Bowling** Compare and contrast batting and bowling with hitting and pitching in baseball: - **Batting**: Batsmen aim to score runs while protecting their wickets. They can hit in any direction. - **Bowling**: Bowlers aim to get batsmen out and prevent runs. Explain the difference between fast bowling and spin bowling. ### 5. **Key Rules and Terms** Introduce essential rules and terms: - **Wicket**: Consists of three stumps and two bails. - **Over**: A set of six deliveries bowled by one bowler. - **Powerplay**: A period in limited-overs cricket where fielding restrictions are in place. - **Duck**: A batsman getting out without scoring any runs. ### 6. **Fielding and Strategy** Explain fielding strategies and positioning: - Fielding is dynamic and adjusts based on the batsman and match situation. - Highlight key positions like slips, gully, point, cover, mid-off, mid-on, square leg, and fine leg. ### 7. **Match Formats** Describe different formats of cricket: - **Test Cricket**: Played over five days with two innings per team. - **One Day Internationals (ODIs)**: 50 overs per side, completed in a single day. - **Twenty20 (T20)**: 20 overs per side, designed for a quick, entertaining game. ### 8. **Watching a Game** Encourage watching a game together: - Watch a T20 match first due to its shorter duration and fast-paced action. - Explain the commentators' insights and on-screen graphics. ### 9. **Playing the Game** If possible, practice playing cricket: - Start with simple batting and bowling drills. - Play a casual game, focusing on fun and understanding rather than strict rules. ### 10. **Historical Context and Culture** Share the rich history and cultural significance of cricket: - Discuss famous players and memorable matches. - Talk about cricket’s impact in different countries, especially in England, Australia, India, and the West Indies. Reiterate that while cricket and baseball are different, the core enjoyment of hitting, fielding, and strategy binds them. Encourage questions and provide resources for further learning. With patience and enthusiasm, a baseball fan can become an avid cricket follower.

For those who want to know there are 10 ways to be out in cricket. Jomboy mentioned 3 Other notable ones are: leg before wicket - where the batter misses the ball but blocks the ball from hitting the wicket with his body. Stumped - misses the ball, exits the crease and the wicket keeper hits the wicket before the batter can get back. Hit wicket - the batter accidentally hits the wicket with what ever he's out. Handle the ball - deliberately touches the ball with his hands without other teams permission. These last 3 are very rare Obstructing the field - for example swatting at a ball while running to prevent it hitting the wickets or a fielder to gather it. Also I guess deliberately deviating from a run to block a fielder Timed out - the replacement batter takes too long to get in place. Hit the ball twice - If a batsman hits a delivery with his bat and then deliberately hits the ball again for any reason other than to defend his wicket from being broken by the ball. If the ball is bouncing or rolling around near the stumps, the batsman is entitled to knock it away so as to avoid being bowled, but not to score runs.

@garydagg9112 2 ай бұрын
@@The0ne357 thanks. I view that as a run out (that might just me) but I should of included it as a mini part. For completeness the rule to be mankd out is: 38.3.1 At any time from the moment the ball comes into play until the instant when the bowler would normally have been expected to release the ball, the non-striker is liable to be run out if he/she is out of his/her ground. In these circumstances, the non-striker will be out run out if he/she is out of his/her ground when his/her wicket is put down by the bowler throwing the ball at the stumps or by the bowler’s hand holding the ball, whether or not the ball is subsequently delivered.

@@philmccracken179 I wouldn't see it like that but I like both sports equally. Full disclosure I'm a football(not the USA version) fan. I'd say that in cricket the umpires have a lot more sway. In baseball there is quite a few manager ejections an lots of times when people have attempted to skirt the rules. Requiring clarifications to rules. Then you have instead of the intent of the game you have the argument "but how is it exactly written" I think cricket has stayed closer to "these are the rules, play gentlemenly" as for example mankd out is to me a run out. To lots of other people it's a dirty trick and in the spirit of the game the bowler should first warn the opponent before actually doing it. Baseball is great but I don't think for example I've ever heard of a team deliberately not getting an out, which they could (say a pick off, but instead of catching the ball and tagging or stepping on the bag they allow the runner to return) Both sports are complex well at least to me.

If you want to talk about American cricket, Bart King is an inevitable name. Bart King pioneered the art of swing bowling and he was a homegrown product of American cricket. He has taken 415 wickets in first-class cricket and has even given tough time to English players during Philadelphia's tour of England in 1800s Sadly he is forgotten now and even Don Bradman called Bart King as the greatest cricketing son of America. Dear ICC, please post awareness about Contributions of Bart King to American cricket

A bit of cricket information regarding the 4 runs. The ball just has to touch the line or rope or what ever the marker is. The ball does not have to go over, just touch for a 4 runs. However, for a 6 runs the ball has to go over the marker in the air. Also, the player must not touch the line or marker with the ball in hand. If the player touchs the line or marker with ball in hand it is 4 runs.

Smith is just phenomenal at taking up close rocket balls, and meteoric edges so many others would not touch. His batting is amazing, I know, and in fact, if you go back and watch, and many newer fans might not even remember, his bowling... his original specialty, was pretty bonza too (had he not been Australian, and of the same era which produced Mitchell Johnson et al, he might have continued as a bowler anywhere else and we'd not have his mastery with the bat to marvel at)..... but his hands man, they are so underrated. I mean, I know they seem like they aren't, he's regularly praised for taking truly awesome catches.... but man, even then, they're so good sometimes, he's still underrated. He's not maybe quite Punter or Jonty level of fielding God, for sure, don't get me wrong, but then again, who is as good as they were, aside from each other? But man, he's just magical to watch when he takes one of those unlikely screamers he so oft manages to snap up or pull down. Just bloody brilliant.
