That's the way the goes biscuit. I was stationed on the Katmai bay, Mackinaw and the Neah Bay. Station group Soo, charlevoix and Houghton Hancock. A hurricane is nothing compared to a gale on superior.

Man, that looks cold. My inlaws are all from the Kewenah and we'd visit in the summer only. I did swim in Superior and that got the old heart racing. Love the videos, keep up the great work.

Thanks Robert. I grew up swimming in Lake Michigan. It could be cold at times, but nothing like Superior! I understand that bacteria does not grow in that water. So shipwrecks are perfectly preserved.

Served 2 1/2 years on the Bristol bay as an Electricians mate. Cold winters in St. Iggy and the Soo and over in Wisconsin.

I'm impressed by the power of these smaller vessels. The Bristol Bay really was pushing the brash ice around that day. And cold? Yeah. When the wind blows out on the lake, you are cold!

That is neat! I don't think you can see well enough through the pilothouse windows to tell. If I'd used a polarizing filter, you may have known. But you could ask him to go back through his logs to see where he was on January 8th, 2018.

Planning. I use Marinetraffic website to tell me the location of boats, and their speed. Most of the time, I was able to stay ahead of them. But yes, there were a few times that I had to really move fast to get to a new location before the boat arrived.

Diane Dugas This is a modern concept which uses compressed air forced through holes below the ship's waterline to reduce friction between the hull, water, and ice. This allows the icebreaker to move through broken ice more easily, using less horsepower. It was patented by Wartsila, a Helsinki, Finland shipyard, from testing in the 1960's.

@@samsrailventures1961 102 has a different setup as the future 140's. 103, Mobile Bay, had a "box" on the fantail with a big Diesel inside for this purpose. We also referred to it as a Hull Lubrication System. But you are spot on with the concept and the holes are in the keel, which is, below the water line I guess but much lower then some people thing. Our 40th anniversary is coming up in 2019. The Plank owners and commissioning crew get together ever so often to see how old we have gotten. Here's a pic of what I'm talking about. You can see the "box" on the fantail and if you watch, you can see the bubbles pushing water up along the side of the hull. This really helped the cutter slide through the ice better and even better if there was snow on the ice which was like sandpaper trying to slide through it. The water/bubbles were a big help. I don’t understand why the task of breaking ice is given to the coast guard, Why doesn’t the shipping companies have their own ice breakers, or build ships that have ice breaking capabilities? They say the Coast guard is not given any credit, that would be like saying that snow plow operators should be praised also. It is a job, and they do it efficiently as per their mandate.

The shipping companies basically pay taxes to maintain the waterways. The Lakes' waterways contribute to the nation's commerce, so the government has an interest in (and obligation) keeping these channels open. So, our taxes help cover the expense also. Interestingly, I believe there are shipping companies in Scandanavian countries that are building their own ice breaking cargo ships. So, in some cases, your point is correct.
