Yes, I am getting by fine in the new home. Things here will keep my going for quite a while, lots to do and lots of space to do it in. Never trust a real gardener anywhere near your prize plants. Check their pockets for seeds or cuttings as they leave the yard. One of the King Louie's in France was trying to promote the potato when it was new in Europe and France was having a famine. The peasants considered it poison and would have no part of it. To over come this issue Louie planted the potatoes on the outside of the palace garden and posted a sign claiming anyone caught stealing spuds from the kings garden would be put to death. The potato spread across France in less than one year after that and solved the starvation issue. Great gardeners are thieves gone to the light side of the force.

In Hawaii it only takes about 4 to 5 years for pods from seeds. Very fast growing nitrogen fixing tree. I am experimenting on using it to grow Shitake and Oyster mushrooms.

Wow! I bought them from him too back in 2018 and just this season one of my trees fruited. I think we got about 15 to 20 pods and man i ate most of them (gifted a few ofc)!! They were delightfully addictive. Hands down my favorite fruit tree. Thanks again Bill!!

That is not an unusual problem. There is a condition known as "Island Fever" that people get. The usual case is people get here, and feel trapped because they are on on Island and have to leave as fast as possible. The other sort of Island Fever is the one I have. I saw the place for the first time and never wanted to leave. I still have Island Fever, they can bury me here by pushing an orchid in my fanny, and having two women in grass skirts push me out of a helicopter into an active lava flow. Chances are I'd land on top of a Japanese tour bus though!

My reaction is probably driven by the price of the seed. There are 250 different Inga species. The Machete pod type is one of the better tasting.

It is likely Inga feuilleei but some people think it is Inga spectabilis. There are hundreds of Inga species so it is a confusing genus.

Yes it is a good nitrogen fixing tree. In Hawaii it is sometimes grown between rows of coffee or papaya and cut as "stick mulch" for the crops. The trash is piled on the soil as fertilizer. Very sustainable system.

Aloha, green garden guy! Ever try planting the ice cream bean tree within a few feet of a new fruit tree planting? I do it here at my place often. I just pin the Inga down with a heavy rock as it grows, so it doesn’t compete with the breadfruit, durian, chempedak, etc... I only prune it back twice a year, and after year three I’ll take it out. The idea being that it’s charging the hole with nitrogen through photosynthesis, into its root system. Blessings!

I have a few Inga here surrounded by other fruit trees but as chop and drop stick mulch I prefer to use pigeon peas. They are a lot easier to keep under control due to small size and shorter life span.

@@farisasmith7109 There are 250 different species of Inga. When getting specific we really need to use Latin otherwise we get lost in the nomenclature. I am not sure which species machete might be. I grow Inga edulis & Inga feuillei. The first is very impressive for it's 3 foot long pods. The second is the best tasting variety I have ever tried. I would love to grow mangosteen & any rambutan in the metro Phx area but next to impossible. Even my other extreme addict Rare Fruit Grower friends have had difficulty with those here. I have a kohala longan and was having some good initial success with a lychee, but removed it and gave it away to a nursery to plant on site and put in another chico sapote (Alano) in it's place. Jamaican Passion Fruit might be worth a shot. I would love the unique Ice Cream Bean, though, as I do hear some may be a bit marginal but are still decent. So that variety you have might be off the charts :) I'll email you tomorrow...thx ! :)

THe Jamacain Passion fruit seeds have a good shelf life so I will have some around for a while. The Mangosteen and Rambutan seeds die out of the fruit in a short time so I am planting all that I have extracted at the moment. They will end up as plants for local sale. Yesterday the markets had a lot of excellent stuff including Durian, Mamey Sapote, Egg Fruits, & Guanabana, The only thing I picked up was Mamey Sapote and will be extracting the seed tomorrow. Like Ice Cream Bean these need to be planted right away.

Your fingers must be much younger and stronger than mine. I have tried all manner of methods for opening these pods and as usual I ended up using a knife. It does surprise me how often people see me using a knife to open fruit and they tell me i am doing it wrong. Since humans invented the knife thousands of years ago I an shocked to find how many people don't know how to use one! Knifes are far less stress on the hand than bare fingers.

:) I was a kid then. We had them growing wild on the side of the hills behind our plantation growing up. the trees are huge but that didn't stop me from climbing them, Mind you the branches are flimsy and if I break the branch I just land in the bush down below. That only happens if I am after the big ones at the end of the branch lol. We had the long and bigger variety. You can eat them when the pods are still green but you have to wait till the pods are fat and full. When ripe they go slight yellow/orangeish. I live in Australia now and the variety here is similar to what you have. A lady gave me a pod and I managed to grow some. its small still. I can't wait for it to fruit :)

Yes, the variety is Inga feuillei. It took a while to figure it out. There are over 250 different Inga species!

The pod is okay for it's sugar content but as a fruit, it is over rated in my opinion. I love the rapid growth, nitrogen fixing ability and the fact I can sell the seeds when i have them. Aloha

The trees are generally easy to find in the farmers markets here. I usually have them in the nursery but I'm currently sold out. I do sell the seed on my website when it is in season. I figure it will begin to ripe in July. I will post it at that time.

Correct. The pulp should be sugary. There are hundreds of different species but the best ones get a nice golden color to the pods when ripe.

I never suggest people plant trees near concrete surfaces. Sorry would not make that recommendation out of principle. The combination of large trees and hard surfaces usually causes problems eventually. Yes, Inga trees are self fertile. One plant will do.

I do believe I spotted such a thing in an ice cream parlor once before. I'm usually drawn to Pistachio or Spumoni though so I never tried it. It has a nice name but why some one decided to call this thing an "ice cream bean" is beyond me. When was the last time your ice cream had a ball of fuzz in it? Cotton Candy bean would have been more accurate.

I have plants available in the nursery for local customers here in the Islands. I only ship plants to the mainland in wholesale quantities of 100 or more. Hi Bill, could this tree survive SF bay area? I read it grows well in Socal. Do you know if there's one at quarry lakes? I see damage temps at 30degrees for mature trees. Also, could this be grown in a container say a half barrel? And lastly, could it be pruned to like a 10ft tall tree and still produces pods? Sorry for asking so many questions!!

Most likely the answers are all no. I never saw an Inga tree in Northern CA during the 25 years i lived there. I suspect most species are too tender for Bay Area weather. A person could plant one in a barrel but considering the tree naturally wants to grow a 60 foot canopy spread trying to keep one confined and heavily pruned will not work well. Too fast and too big for that sort of culture. Any Yes answers to your questions would have to come from some one who has tried what you suggest and succeeded.

I believe most of the beauty in the coffee is from the type of soil and the weather here in Hawaii. The only thing I do with the trees is prune and feed. Sometimes I use chicken manure other times coffee fertilizer. Make sure the soil in your pot is acidic. 5.5 to 6 pH is right. Soil and fertilizers made for azalea and camellia work well.

I believe the tree I show in the video is Inga feuillei but with out proof I hesitate to name it. I have plants for this type plus the more common Inga Edulis with the huge long pods. @Tropical Bay Area There are a number of Inga species here in Hawaii. They are difficult to separate. I have managed to ID edulis and feuillei. I know of others but can't place a proper name. For the most part there important feature is nitrogen fixing. They are excellent stick mulch trees. As for the fruit, it is novel and edible but nothing to write home about. The seeds are the valuable part. They are really hard to get.

I really can't say. There is no data posted anywhere I can find about the hardiness of this tree. Looking at it's native range I would say it did not evolve where frost could occur. That is the best i can tell you. Find a good microclimate in the landscape and give it a try.

I tell you what the bayarea has changed and especially in my Hayward zone 10a it has warmed up a few degrees. Global warming is giving us a chance to experiment a bit.

@@gardengainzz9191 You may be right about the increase in temperature but unfortunately warming of the Pacific will also result in more erratic weather. You can also expect periodic plunges into freezing weather too. 1989/90 knocked out just about every border line tree and shrub in the Bay Area. 91/92 finished off anything that got missed. Since then the weather had been a lot milder but the ice will return. Good luck.

Generally legumes do not strike cuttings. I believe Inga is no exception. The tree will make fruit in about 4 or 5 years from a seed.

If you can get the young trees up to size with protection and it seldom drops below 30 f. in your area then the answer is maybe. I see reports from southern California and even from Phoenix about people growing this tree. When i lived in the CA Bay Area the Rare Fruit growers used to talk about this plant but I never saw one growing there. Here in Hawaii it grows like a weed. It is vigorous enough to be worth a try.

I left my White Sapote tree back in California when we sold the house a year ago. Since I already had Chico sapote, Mamey Sapotes , Green Sapote and Chocolate Sapote here on the Island I thought I might not replant the white sapote. After picking up some excellent quality Suebelle white sapote fruit and eating it on waffles I decided I missed my tree and just planted a SueBelle last week. Waffles and white sapote are excellent, give it a try.

Life could be worse. At least Florida has a forgiving climate for growing. Back in the 1950's and early 60"s I loved the place and wanted to live there as a child. Then the building boom hit and I lost my taste for the crowds there. I thought for sure that the Big Island would be safe from over development because of the active volcanoes, remote location in the middle of the ocean and no freeways that go any place but around in circles. I was wrong. Apparently things are getting bad out there because the population here has grown 40% since 2000. I didn't think there were this many Americans willing to live in the middle of the ocean on a volcano that spews lava by the hour.

It is looking good but it's more like baby pictures than garden videos at the moment. I have another batch of seeds going. They are a really good nursery tree. Grow fast, look great, sell well under the tag Chocolate Sapote.

There are over 300 different Inga species. I'm afraid mountain variety isn't enough information for a good answer. I can take a good guess though. All Inga species here in Hawaii are extremely fast growing and very large. Inga edulis can reach almost 100 feet. Most types I know of are far to large and fast for container culture. If your plant is a dwarf type them maybe it will work.

The seeds for Inga are almost impossible to obtain. They have to be shipped fresh and live from the pod. Dry seed is dead. The process of shipping the seed is very difficult and tends to be expensive. I do not ship out of the USA. Any efforts on my part to do so has resulted in failure. Customs hold seeds long enough that they are dead on arrival. Finding a local source is your best choice. Someone may well have brought this tree to Vietnam. Aloha

Yes and no. It is illegal for me to mail the pods but I can legally mail seeds removed from the pod. The seed can not be dried or stored so I only list it when the tree is in crop. Right now it appears the May will be the month I list the seed on my website. www.greengardenservice.net

Really! I was introduced to it as a tourist before I moved here. It is quite common at Farmers markets in Puna and Hilo districts. We use it as a stick mulch, nitrogen fixer here. If you live on the Big Island you are welcome to drop in and try. I still have a few pods on the tree.

@@bandita445 Wrong tree. They are fast growing and huge. I have a ten year old with a 30 foot spread. They can cover a huge space in no time. I'd just shop the fruit at the market and plant an orange tree or something that will not eat your property.

Leo, A common permaculture practice here is what we call stick mulch. You grow a row off coffee then plant a row of Ice Cream Bean next to it. Every time the tree grows u you coppice it and toss the trash under the coffee for fertilizer. Aloha.

They would be a poor candidate for greenhouse culture. They grow really fast and usually get to 120 feet wide by 60' high or so.

I get along pretty good here with the AG inspectors. If I started violating the agricultural laws here I wouldn't get the same reception from the officials. Fruit leaving this Island must be irradiated. I don't do irradiation so I can't ship fruit.

@@marandacarver9500 It is easy to find out. You need to take a trip to both the local County AG office and the Federal AG office. They both have their own rules. Where you live depends on what you can and can not do. It is quite area specific. Since I sell my stuff on a farm in Hawaii the rules are pretty easy until I try to go off Island.

Anything will grow in a pot for a little while but Ice Cream Bean is a medium large tree with elevation of about sixty feet and a spread that is greater. They don't usually start fruiting at less than 20 feet. I would say it is a difficult under taking in a container past nursery size.

I am not surprised that you are having problems. Inga seed can not be dried or stored. Often it comes out of the pod with roots and shoots already developed. Inga edulis is really bad about that. I do sell the seeds. The season for them is March to May. They are so hard to ship live that I really want to refuse any international orders. I will ship in mild weather to the US Mainland. I noticed a lot of greyish coloring on the leaves closest to the floor. Have you worried that having the branches in such closest proximity to the dirt my expose the tree to unnecessary pests and illness?

No. The trees are very resistant to any diseases we have in Hawaii. The only ground based pest on the tree is the slug and they only make holes in the leaves. The tree would be naturally higher from the earth but our soil is very soft and it tipped in a hurricane during high rain. I have been waiting for new growth to exhibit geotropism before I cut off the old canopy. Economically this tree is very good to me, lots of people buy the seeds. By getting too worried about the fact that the tree tipped would cut into my income.

Most of the flowers produced on Inga do not set fruit. Probably less than 20% of them become pods. The trees seldom set much fruit earlier than 5 to 7 years of age. After that they become more reliable. Pollination from insects probably helps. No bees, no pods. If no insects are present you could hand pollinate but this is ordinarily not required. Likely given enough time the tree will fruit on it's own

It depends on how large your garden is. We have two acres and I have already reduced the size of one by 50%. Probably cut the second one down eventually. In a small garden they might work to coppice for stick mulch but fruiting would be difficult.

They are close but still green. It shouldn't be long now. May is generally a good harvest month. Some things are off this year. I don't know how but the eruption last year seems to have effected the cycles of many plants. We are just starting to return to normal. I will post the seed as soon as it ripens and likely do a video to let everyone know.

Inga refuses to grow from cuttings. The seeds will be ripe April to June. They can not be dried or stored. They must be harvest from the tree and shipped in moss. During the season they are always on my website www.greengardenservice.net The crop looks good, about another 30 days.

Gosh, the crop on this tree comings in from Spring to early summer. If you can imagine what happens when I post my plants on the internet, I stripped the tree clean this year by mid August and either sold the seeds, sold the fruit or planted the seed in my nursery. Right now the tree is back to full flower and working on more pods but I am not really sure about the timing of ripening. For sure if you contact me again in May I will have fruit. BIll if you like sweet podded fruits if you ever get a chance you should check this one out Hymenaea courbaril. Very interesting flavor and smell lol definitely a conversation piece. It's supposed to be pretty healthy too. Oh the nick name is stink toe because it smells mildly like stinky feet lol.

Those things have a propensity for not holding on to soil very well whenever there is a windstorm and tipping on the side. I've seen it happen on all of mine here in Florida. Their roots are horrible!

In Hawaii they are fairly stable. Lava doesn't tip much! Nothing goes deep here though. With 120 plus inches of rain roots tend to stay where they can find air.

I got a whole bunch of the seeds from MauiSeedCompany (Tammy) for my kids tree growing workshop that I threw for their class. She shipped the seeds in a wet paper towel in a ziplock bag. She does have department of ag. inspections. I have had a great success rate with them. I mostly have traded them for other rare tropicals. I tried planting one in the ground (protected) but it didn't make it through our bay area winters. I'm going to try growing it in a pot and let it get bigger before planting next time. They are a fun planting project.

No the USDA would require that the pods had been irradiated before leaving. Dry seed is the only way I can ship other than plants in soiless mediums. I do not take orders for plants in quantities less than 100 though.

I have a feeling you would be happier looking at the thousands of other acres that are for sale here. I'm not really looking to sell and the price, if I was selling, would be in the upper 90% of properties in Puna. Most land is cheaper. Few places here have the features of this property like ocean view, mountain view, deep soil, public water, paved county road, electric, phone and cable. Plus safety from eruptions and great air circulation. I imagine the snow can get tiring. I like seeing it from a distance on Mauna Kea while sitting under a palm tree with a cold beer.
