@@KtotheG Cube was supposed to diss Common. He still dissed New York Hip Hop. He was supposed to diss Chicago. Common is not from New York.
@KtotheG3 ай бұрын
@@jaykaynum5569 I know, but NY is East Coast and LA is West Coast. Those are the only two cities they care about. Cube probably dissed NY because Common was favoring NY over LA in I Used to Love Her... and NY was saying he fell off with all his commercial music and movies. I remember in '97 or '98, Cube did an interview with The Source magazine where he addressed the "the circle of keep it real MFers" (his exact words) who kept saying he sold out or fell off. The fact that he used that phrase was a pretty obvious indication that he was targeting NY or East Coast hip hop fans, because that was a popular saying on the East Coast during that time ever since Nas and AZ did Life's A B. So apparently Cube also used the beef with Common to get out his frustrations with NY/East Coast discontent. If you noticed, his sound became gradually more West Coast/G Funk by the late '90s after being more East Coast/Boom Bap during the early '90s.
For me I used to love her is easily one of the most important songs ever made in hip hop. When you listen to it you can't deny what has happened to our culture due to the changes in hip hop. The violence is now cool, it was about artistry and competition. Now we are largely on gangsta stuff. Everyone wants to be one now. We cannot act like that's not what has happened. The music isn't good for our people. I wish hip hop wasn't about that now so our young people wouldn't feel drawn to being something they don't need to be.
