One thing you may have already figured out is although you strive to be self sufficient you will at some point need help. If you can financially swing it I highly recommend a tractor (as you mentioned) I would be lost without mine it is an absolute back saver and life saver. Thank you for the video

U.P. One of the biggest things to worry about is if you get rain on top of snow on your roof. If you don't keep it cleared off and it rains, your roof will cave in. So you're doing it right paying someone to keep it cleaned off, it's necessary. On the snowblower issue, if you get a small lawn tractor to do yard work with, you can connect your battery powered snowblower to it and you can ride on it. Every little thing that saves labor helps. And YES THOSE ARE DEER TRACKS! Not Coyote or Wolf. A couple of the tracks clearly show the Cloven Hoof. ben/ michigan A troll living under the bridge. You're doing great!!! My family has a home in Door County, specifically Ephraim, Wisconsin. So a lot of your property and terrain is very similar to ours, along with the climate and snowfalls coming off Green Bay across the peninsula into Lake Michigan which in turn heads your way. You've seemed to discover that the people/neighbors are extremely friendly and helpful, especially dealing with those winters. It can be life or death up there without the appropriate resources. Glad you seem to have found a "Property Caretaker", very common for a lot of the cottages get rented out in the summer months like ours. Very encouraging your family wants another winter there. Sounds like they're willing to learn to play in the stuff as we call it. Skiing, snowboarding, snowmobiling etc. I'd love to see more about the area you're in as comparison to Door County like local parks and trails, towns, shops, and restaurants, local activities, but also understand and greatly respect the privacy and safety of you and the family which always comes first. We're just enjoying living vicariously through you. Looking forward to the next video adventure.

You are doing a great job keeping up with your snow clearing! It might not seem like a big deal to some people until they realize the necessity of it. That's so cool how you made a deal to move there and agreed to "own" the snow removal. No small task for sure! That is a nice spot to hang out by your creek, or crik for smaller ones. Being around Pines, water and especially flowing or waterfalls are said to give off negative ions which are calming and bring a feeling of well being. For anyone to say otherwise I say just try to sit by a trout stream or falls and be in a bad mood, it's impossible!😅 As far as any content suggestions that's easy, just show some of the sights around you or take a drive somewhere. The U.P. is postcard pretty in so many places. A really cool book that had an effect on me when I was a kid is My Side Of The Mountain. You can still get it on Amazon. It's about a young boy who leaves his family in NYC on his own to live off grid in the Catskill Mountains. The woman author includes a good amount of bushcraft stuff and must have been a fascinating person. Thanks for sharing!

@newtotheUPMarie I am doing well thanks and hope you are as well. Your comment about strong women in the outdoors had me thinking of this lady right away. With the predictive algorithm on KZbin your channel was suggested and several others of people in the U.P. The Big Two Hearted river is one I thought I would kayak down one day. It's known for several log jams since it is classified as a "Natural" river so trimming branches and trees is not allowed. This video popped up of a solo woman in a canoe floating that river. Must be doable I thought. Ha! She puts on a master class of portaging around and climbing over treacherous log jams like a pro! I've paddled upstream a mile or so from the rivermouth where the current is slow before but will pass on this long float for now.😅 She has a cool channel too with similar adventures. @@newtotheUPMarie I’ll make this my last comment for now as I’m sure that you are busy- but don’t be undersold either.. as I said, don’t get a snowblower on anything smaller than the 500 series ( if you go with John Deere) . By the looks of your driveway and lawn area, the 4’ snow blower and either the 4 or 5’ mower deck would be fine.👍 Good luck on the UP.. Also, NEVER chop, pound or any force other than a roof rake for your roof situation. Use calcium or sodium chloride, ashes from your stove, and Mother Nature to melt the ice. Then in the spring find a good carpenter to insulate your house to create a cold space below the roof so that you won’t ever have ice dams again.. Good luck.

I'm glad that things are getting better with the snow situation for you. My book club loved this book, "Before the coffee gets cold". It's by Toshikazu Kawaguchi. The book is about, if you could go back in time, and see and talk to anyone from your past. I don't want to give too much away, but you only have until a cup of coffee gets cold, to finish your meeting with the person you want to see. If your neighbor's that help don't want to accept any money or gifts, you could offer to collect their mail when they are away, or water plants, or give a ride to someone when they need it.

There is a roof rake made by snow joe. It has 3 inch wheels to roll on your shingles and it has a plastic tail for no better description so the snow slides off on the tail and its less work not having to pull all the snow off. You need to use it before your snow starts to freeze. There are youtube videos on how it works and how to use it.

You poor thing! I've been watching you struggle with your new environment and I completely empathize, having lived in the Adirondacks for 25 years! I've been through what you're facing and more. You've inspired me to comment, something I don't usually do. My vaulted roof could not be easily upgraded with more insulation nor ventilation to solve the root cause of the ice dams. I had to deal with the aftermath. This is going to sound weird but has worked for me in a pinch and if you're desperate to prevent water ingress. Because, once it's leaking, who you gonna call? You're in the middle of a snow storm, everyone else is having the same problem - you've got to deal with it. If your roof is otherwise sound and doesn't leak in a heavy rain - then you can use water to cut channels in the ice dams. What? Water to prevent a leaking roof? Yes! It's better than trying to chop or melt the ice with a torch. Both can damage the roof and so can salt. Ask me how I know?! Alright, so bear with me... What I did was to make my own pressure hose of sorts from a three foot or so section of 1/2" soft copper tubing. Using a ball peen hammer, I hammered a bell shape into one end of the tubing so I could attach it to the end of a hose using a hose washer and standard hose cap from the hardware store. I drilled a hole in the cap to pass it over the copper tubing to connect the tubing to the hose. On the other end of the tubing, I hammered it flat to the point where it would still pass water, but be constrict the water flow into a sort of flat pressurized stream. I put a broad hook in the end of the tubing so I could direct the water flow down. Then - I ran the hose to my sink through a window - or wherever you can connect into a HOT water supply. A shutoff valve on the hose before the tubing is handy so you an control the flow, but not strictly necessary. Take the contraption and direct the hooked tubing to start spraying down into the ice dam from the bottom of the roof up. It takes a little practice and depends on the pressure. Too much water pressure and the contraption flies all around. My well water was only 30 psi so it worked for me. You can adjust the opening in the spray end of tubing with some practice to get it right. As you work your way up, the stream will quickly cut through the ice dam and you will form channels through which any backed up water can flow off the roof. Do this every few feet along the edge of the roof. You only need to go up high enough to get past the ice dam and thus provide a way for any backed up water to flow off. And as you work your way across the roof the icicles will start melting and falling to the ground. It's very satisfying! Even if the extra water does contribute briefly to the leak - it will still get the backed up water flowing OFF of your roof in no time and the leak will stop. It's a beautiful thing to see. You can also do this proactively before the water starts backing up into your roof. Just cut channels in the ice. Relatively little effort to do once you get going. If you prefer not to make the pressure hose and just want to test the idea, just use a hose nozzle from a ladder to get started cutting channels. But my contraption lets me direct the water flow without necessarily getting up on the roof. I used to stand on a ladder, but your roof isn't really that high. This is better than salt (in my opinion) because it doesn't hurt the roof. I never liked the idea of putting salt on the roof. The roof is designed to shed water, right? So use water to cut the channels and then the backed up water will escape (until the next time!) You do have to be careful and wait for the right conditions if you can. Don't do this if its really cold. Around 30 or above is best. Also, you have to be aware of the water freezing and forming slick spots along the ground. For me - it was dirt around the house, no pavement, and the water just seeped into the ground before I got giant lakes of ice. It worked for me. I eventually replaced my shingle roof with a standing seam metal roof. This doesn't solve the insulation nor ventilation issues in your roof - but the snow and ice will slide off on their own and you don't have to deal with ice dams anymore. I used to spend hours working on my driveway. I'd return to the house exhausted and frustrated, and then look at the ice dams in despair before I came up with this solution. At least you don't have a 1500' gravel driveway with culverts that freeze up! And, a snow thrower doesn't work well on gravel. Ask me how I know! Have fun and keep being positive!

Fact based, localized historical data (I.e. your neighbors life experiences) is 1,000 times more valuable than any you will find on the internet. Good for you, you are truly living "life" and the challenges it can bring. Two thoughts', your neighbors, guessing they do not want money as you noted, but most are beer drinkers, determine what they enjoy (spirits) and provide, you'll be buddies for life!!!.Another consideration, and it's the route I took being in your "snow boots". During the summer months shop for a used 4-wheel drive truck with a plow, you can get a great deal during the summer months, I would look/shop south of your location (UP), you might have to drive a distance, but the truck/equipment will not have been used as "hard", or often. Having a truck with a plow is a real "game changer" relating to your snowfall and not difficult to use. Nice barn/garage, hope it has "heat"...and you do have deer, and bear!
@newtotheUPMarieКүн бұрын
my garage is not heated but I want to put a wood burning stove in there, great thoughts on beer/liquor as an optional thank you! great advice on shopping in the LP/Mitten!
@paulvonauth7254Күн бұрын
Most prefer "spirits" over the money, typically guys are beer drinkers. I located a used truck, app. 10 years old, decent condition, in the "lower" half of Michigan. During the summer months guys are looking to sell, and you can get a real deal. I never put "plates" on mine, nor did I insure it. It sat at the end of my driveway, once the snow started falling it was relatively "simple" to keep the drive clear, and I was way off the main road. Had a heated garage similar to yours, in the winter I placed it(truck) in the garage, keeping it warm, just opened the garage door and started plowing, it was a 15/20-minute job...Good Luck, many challenges living up there, but worth it in many respects...

When snow blowing, try to blow the snow as far as possible so it goes beyond where you want it cleared. Otherwise, you will have to blow the same snow several times. The problem comes when the wind blows it back at you, and then you need to lower the discharge chute. . The lever on the top right of the snowblower control panel controls the speed of the impeller that shoots the snow out of the chute. Light snow means you can use less impeller speed. Heavy and deep snow will require a higher impeller speed. A faster impeller speed runs down the batteries sooner. Definitely wear goggles. Your eyes are too precious to risk. Although the full face shield 'could' be a good idea, I think it is overkill. Consider a pair of safety glasses or goggles. They have shaded goggles or glasses that will protect your eyes both from flying debris and from the sun. Especially on sunny days, the snow reflects a lot of light. . . There are at least 2 Menards in the UP. If one is near you they have what you need for whatever you are doing. . Charge and store your batteries in the house. A warm battery charges more easily and also provides more initial power to the blower. When you are using the blower, the battery will stay warm while it is being discharged. . Menards has 2, 3.5, and 5 gallon buckets. The two larger buckets will easily fit 2 Ego batteries. The bucket makes carrying and in-between storage of the batteries easier. The batteries may also fit in the 2 gallon bucket.

Next time you need a roof you might want to consider a metal roof. Last longer and should be more "ice damn resistant". Winter tip, the warmer you dress while working outside the more you sweat. So might want to gauge that beforehand. Personally I never wear scarves and hats very often. Now if I was hunting or hiking then yes dress warm. Rule of thumb if you're near your house or car you can always warm up if you get cold. Just don't lock yourself out the house or car or run out of gas. I always keep a warm coat,gloves,hat in my car just in case.
@newtotheUPMarie21 сағат бұрын
I do like metal roofs, I did check into one and I found out it won't help much because I don't have the right pitch in the roof sadly. but I will fix the insulation and ventilation and should be good next year. appreciate the tips!
@chipsdad5861Күн бұрын
Based on what I can see, If I were plowing this driveway, I would make a path from where the camera is to the gas take and just keep blowing to each side so your snow is getting closer to the woods on each side. Kind of like a zamboni on an ice skating rink. Start in the middle divide the driveway in half and work toward the edges.

Don't feel like you have to do this all by yourself. There's nothing wrong with hiring someone to take care of your driveway in the winter if you can afford it. If you really want to do it yourself you should probably upgrade your snow removal equipment. Personally I wouldn't go any smaller than a 28" blower and (sorry) gas powered. When I moved up here 32 years ago I noticed most of the snowblowers we're orange. Turns out they were made by Ariens. I finally broke down and bought one and have never regretted it. A tractor would definitely be a game changer for sure. Honestly your ice dams don't look that bad to me. Is it something to keep on top of? Yes, but I've seen way worse and if you address the insulation and ventilation you'll be fine. I live in the central U.P. and the most I've ever shoveled my roof is 3 times one year. Most roofs are structurally sound enough to handle U.P. snow loads. I admire your attitude with how you're approaching your first U.P. winter. The Yooper Finn's call it Sisu. Those first winters were a bit daunting for me, but now it's just Yooper life. Enjoy your videos.

thank you for saying that, i was pretty hard on myself when I realized I need help, but now I am just thankful for it. yeah im learning that my cute little battery snow blower may not be what I want to use for the driveway. I do have a person who plows the driveway but what happened was the ground was not frozen and I have a lot of ruts in my yard and so I am waiting a bit until the ground is frozen and will have the snow plow guy come back to help. but I do want something different for next winter. I have no issue with gas, sometimes I can't start gas products though if the push start goes out. for my ice dams, one was causing a leak into the house and down the wall. that is why Im focused on the ice dams until I can get the insulation/ventilation fixed in the spring. thank you for watching!

If you clear the snow before, and during the roof raking, it will not compact so much and become unmanageable. Raking the first three feet of the roof when light snow will keep the edge from icing up so deep. The sun will help melt the layer of ice. Use calcium chloride instead of salt to speed up melting and reduce damage to plants and concrete. Let the sun do most of the work.
@newtotheUPMarieКүн бұрын
yes, things I wish i would have done/known before, but i do know now so I am prepared for next year
@mtu-engineer3220Күн бұрын
@newtotheUPMarie Next year is only a week away. Keep practicing with that snow blower, you seem to struggle with it a lot. Keep the chute tilted up a little so you toss back the snow farther. Use the snow broom sparingly for walks and decks. Rely on the large blower for the bulk of the work. It keeps the paths wider and handles deeper snow.
@wawalker1Күн бұрын
don’t read the owners manual unless you absolutely need too. Blow the snow lengthwise to minimize the back and forth. Start in the middle and work from one side to the other to minimize the rotating the chute.
@jerryodonoghue8624Күн бұрын
You are learning the hard way, a way you will never forget. With the snow blower you need to let the machine do the work and not your arms. Find a way to have the machine turn for you and not your arms. I am not a big believer in Battery operated but that a whole other discussion. However you are doing awsome. Help in whatever shape or form is a blessing and neighbors are one of the awsome gifts we get once in a while. I dont know how old your children but the fact that they dont help you out with the snow does not sit well with me. You feed them house them take care of them and they dont feel some sence of responsibility to help out is not an acceptable excuse not to help and support their Mom.

Your last video showed you shoveling your roof but you seemed focused on the vent pipe coming up through the roof. My last 2 homes had leaked through that area and I fixed the leaks with putting roof tar around the pipe and roof area. On one home with an older roof I touched up areas where the shingles were broken.. If you have young teens and love the thought of the tractor with snowblower then Rudyard or Pickford would be a good place to look but you don't need a big tractor as a smaller one with blower does a good job. Make sure they deliver it free. Tell them you're from Western U.P. for the best deal. Take your time for the best deal. Once your family gets on a tractor you will never be able to use it yourself as they will enjoy running the blower. It's easy. You don't have enough snow today on your roof to worry about it. It can hold a lot more. There's a snow hill South of Sault for tubing and they may have a ice rink or some of the schools. Happy New Year🎉.

We happen to live in, what amounts to a rock quarry so I have a lot of rock. Last summer I offered to attempt to solve the water problem. I put a plan in place that was working great. I dug trenches and transported rock up a hill with a wheelbarrow for 5 months. Unfortunately when it came time to discuss payment she became very confrontational. Only criticism i have is. I don't like seeing snow piled up against a house. I would try to keep it away. But that's just me..

I worry about that too, I am thinking water damage is possible or can be heavy?
@MR-gp9ysКүн бұрын
@@newtotheUPMarie Water damage mainly, not so much the weight unless it's piled up really high. But once the sun hits the snow its gonna melt plus heat from the house will melt it. Than damage and rot the wood. I would just try to keep it a foot or 2 away. Plus i noticed in the beginning of you video where that channel in your roof is. You have a big pile of snow and its almost covering a vent in your foundation. Not good to cover them with snow or anything.. That's just my opinion.

all great information, i appreciate it, I will move that snow pile in front of the vent, I do know what you are talking about there, I will work on trying to keep the snow away from the house, thank you!!

I couldn't agree with you more about materialism. I went from a brand new F150 a few years back, to a 2006 Ford Ranger, lol!! Sold my huge house I lived in by myself and bought a smaller bungalow. I always felt that having all the big ticket items would make me happy. My plan is to eventually sell my current house and move into the country side. My older Ranger I'm currently driving has been solid for three years straight. I've had more fun with this truck than my huge F150 I had. I eventually want to upgrade, but unsure of when. I heard you mention the Subaru Crosstrek in a previous video. That's something I would love in this area. I'm just over the bridge in Sault Ontario. Simpler life is a better life!!!

It is great to hear from someone else who has found the simple things in life can be better than all the material things! you have a great plan and are making moves! soo ontario is beautiful! yes, I like those subaru's but I am not going to buy anything for a while. I am not sure what I want and I have two vehicles that are paid off and in great condition so im hanging on to them for a bit longer- thanks for the comment!

Are you still having to work? Or is taking care of your parents kind of your job. You probably saved enough through the years that you can live off savings.
