Ice fishing jumbo perch in eastern South Dakota. Jason Mitchell and Ice Team Pro Scott Seibert offer tips for finding and catching perch on dish bowl basin lakes in this video. Where fish are often moving and scattered. The number one key to success is often simply be willing to drill a lot of holes.
The freshwater shrimp that are so common in many of these lakes produce incredible growth rates with perch but the amount of forage can also makes these fish difficult to catch at times. The forage base in these lakes often has an influence on productive presentations.
Thanks for watching and make sure to subscribe for future videos. Leave additional tips on the comments below to help anglers catch more fish!

Have been trying to access and ice fish this spot for a few years now, always frustrating driving by a dozen times when the weather isn't favorable. Hopefully this will be the year.

Just wanted to update this review. Year 4, with a bit of sharpening I'm still thrilled with this Auger! This is an excellent Auger. kzbin.infoUgkxe0I-fnTUByahTCyStrIBXsesSkQJKn8n It splits to 1/2 size for storage in the warm months and easily assembles for winter use. I can cut holes in less than a minute by and really don't feel the need to ever adapt this to use with a drill. It cuts easily with the included blades (which can be sharpened or replaced as needed) and has held up extremely well through last season, and now for the first cuts of this season. I do recommend this to anyone who asks, and personally prefer this over powered augers. These are quiet, still quite fast, lighter, and don't risk spilling chemicals into our waterways. I plan to do a lot of fishing this year through the ice, thanks to this trusty Auger. The 8" diameter is great for fishing pike through the ice as well.

A normal day on the ice I drill at least 100 holes. I give a hole max 2 minutes without bites. Perch are at the bottom like 95% of the winter. At winter I search for structure close to deep parts. Every thing from 1 feet to 30 feet is good water. Drop the spoon very slow. If no bite then wack it in the bottom hard five times and pull up 1 feet and hold it still. Sorry for bad English. I am from Sweden.

I would say yes but with that cold of temps, you are going to want base layers as everybody has a different motor and it really depends on how active you are.

I noticed you use an open loop knot to tie your jigs on. Is there a reason for this preference? I was always of the school of thought that you wanted your jig to remain horizontal.
@JasonMitchellOutdoors
@JasonMitchellOutdoors 2 жыл бұрын
I use a palomer knot a lot with jigs but I like to use a heavier fluorocarbon leader when fishing places where there are walleyes and pike and find that the small jigs don’t have good action or hang straight with the heavier line and bigger knot so I use a loop knot with the heavier leaders.

Random question, what model of Dewalt drill do you use? I have the 996 and go through batteries pretty quick. I wonder if the torque is too low.
@JasonMitchellOutdoors

I will check but it is a 24 volt brushless. I usually carry about five or six batteries and always have one on the charger running off an inverter in my machine or pickup.

There have been good bites on the Main Lake, East Bay and Black Tiger Bay, East Devils this winter so far. Many of the bites have been deep, deeper than 30 feet. Be willing to drill a lot of holes or find fish. If you are beginning merry to ice fishing, make sure to spend some time on the walleye and pike as they can sometimes be easier to find relating to structure or shorelines.

Back in the 60's upper peninsula in Michigan we caught droves of jumbo. Small ones were 15" , big ones were 18" and 19" non stop. They would bite the gold hooks right off the line. No bait ... Gold hooks !
