Ice Fishing Lake Poygan Walleyes - January 2021!

On this video, we hit the ice of Lake Poygan (in Wisconsin), on the hunt for the sometimes great walleye action this Lake Winnebago System gem can hold. We were able to put together a limit of perfect eating sized walleyes, after releasing a nicer one and a smaller one, and of course, losing an absolute PIGGY at the bottom hole... Ugh!!!
All fish were caught on #3 Rapala Jigging Raps with no meat.

Spent every summer of my youth on Poygan from 5 to 18, my Grandfathers Brother owned the place right on the west side of the public landing off of County B on Lake Poygan Road, a few years back I was having a beer at friend of mines dad's tavern on Elston Ave in Chicago when I got into a conversation, with a couple of guys who were planning a trip to fish the fall walleye run on poygan since it was late november I warned them about the weather and since there were going to be 5 guys in the party to use two boats, however my advice went unheeded, the party used a single rental boat over loading it, a storm came up and the boat capsized it was found at the mouth of willow creek a search was made and the bodies of the first three victims were found almost right away, but the temperatures dropped and the lake froze, ending the search, the body of the fourth victim was found by sturgeon fishermen frozen in the ice, the body of the fifth victim was found the following spring by Doug Nelson washed up at the Wolf River House Pier, because Poygan is 22 miles long and 5 miles wide and only an average of 18 feet deep with most being only41/2 feet and relatively unprotected from the wind, I've seen it go from flat calm to waves 6 to 7 feet within seconds, so it pays to keep a constant eye on the weather regardless of season!

you are missing a rod guide insert on the 28" medium. that will chafe your line up if you don't replace that guide ring.

Haha. Funny you mentioned that. I actually went off on a tangent on how awesome and practically bulletproof that rod is besides missing that guide. I cut that clip out though. Been like that for years and has caught hundreds of fish but I just bring myself to change anything about it while it’s holding on like a champ!

I know. I am still feeling it. I had a long drawn out clip after that about the front hooks of a rap helping but sometimes hurting us-this was prime example... stuck on bottom of ice. Some actually snip off the front hook of raps because of it. Oh well, gotta try to trick her again! Haha!

Since the shoe is located Northwest of the landing off County B on Lake Poygan Road ( parking is on the county picnic area on the south side of B) that's the one to use.

When you get your 3 walleye limit do you have to stop fishing? Or can you keep fishing for other fish

You can keep fishing but if you catch a walleye, instead of one of the many other species we frequently catch, you have to release the walleye with no culling.

You have to stop keeping walleye but since the shoe also is one of the best spots on the lake ( year round) for perch, crappies, and pike, you can always switch rigs and fish for them!

The med rod has 6lb the med light has 4lb. All fluorocarbon and with a very small swivel about 14”ish up.
