Generally most NRL teams over the years had 1 or 2 players who were known as fierce "hitters", and usually they were bigger guys (forwards) imposing themselves on the opposition. These guys always made the highlight reels because you knew what was going to happen. Matai was a centre and Taufua a winger, and both a little smaller than the forwards, but they had a little something in them that wanted to "hurt" the opposition. Over the years, there have been many smaller players in the NRL who could inflict damage.

The Refferes dont really approve of fights, but as long as no punches are thrown then they can have a bit of a go if they want. If a player throws a punch they get a sin bin, whichmeans 10 minutes on the sideline and unable to play

legal tackles in nrl arn shoulders down. If you hit the neck or head you get penalised or sent to the bin depending on the nature of the tackle. AKA if u swing a arm careless and hit the head your in big trouble. But if they crouch down a bit to dodge the tackle thats a accident

That's my boys. We need that sort of backbone again - these guys were on the wing and one in from the wing crunching harder than most forwards could ever hope to do (a lot of the time even against actual forwards, not just other wingers and centers). Back in the day yes there were proper fights, these days they crack down hard on that shit you can barely even slap someone anymore. It looks ridiculous when some halfback can stand in a forwards face and mouth off knowing the forward will be punished if they react.
