I am no Ford guy, but these lil Fox Stangs were seriously fun cars to drive with the 5 speed and 302. My neighbor had a blk 88 GT. After about 3 inches of snow, it was useless. 1 day after about 4 inches of snow, he went out to start the car, just to charge it up, and put it in 1st gear. The rear wheels spun, but it never moved. He then got out of the car, as it was still running in gear, tires still spinning, just to prove that he wasn't concerned that it was going anywhere. LOL

I grew up around Mopars and always wanted one of my own. I had a 71 Charger for a little while. In 1984 my cousin bought a new black Mustang GT. I drove it in the late 80s after I got my license and really enjoyed it. Ten years later I ran across a nice 92 GT, black inside and out with a five speed, BBS wheels and I put a set of two stage cat back flow masters on it. It a lot of fun. Gets half decent milage on the freeway, easy to park and drive around in the city (if I must). Best thing is there are tons of after market parts available.

The 85 GT did not have a full dual exhaust system, there was a cross over behind the engine that flowed through a heat riser diverter and into a single pellet CC. After which it separated back into a twin system. 85's have a single hump trans mount that has to be replaced to run a dual system, I put a MAC 2 1/2 inch system on mine (still own it) and once you adjust the carb or put on a better one the car wakes up and is more than a match for the later fuelies.

In March of 1986 I ordered my first brand new car from Dearborn through a Ford dealer on Long Island, New York. Three months later I took delivery of a 1986 Mustang GT, 5 speed stick, AC, power windows, tinted glass and sunroof. Black with a gray interior. I also specified the no cost optional 3.08 rear axle ratio instead of the standard 2.73. Thirty seven years later the car sits in my shop with a little over 9,000 miles on the odometer. With the exception of fluids and it’s 4th battery, it is as it completely original and stock. It’s never been driven in any inclement weather or even a wet road. To me it is truly the definition of a time capsule. When I take it out for a cruise, I’m amused at the attention it gets. Sometimes more than my restored ‘26 Model T roadster and ‘30 Model A Coupe.

I had a 1985 Mustang GT convertible and I knew it was the last of something very special as Ford had announce in the fall of 1984, my senior year in high school, that this would be the last year for the factory Holley 4 barrel carb. I remembering reading Hot Rod and Car Craft magazines and they were writing about this and I knew I had to get one. Two years later in 87 I finally did and it was a fun car and I kept it for 10 years, mostly in storage for sentimental reasons. I had a lot of good memories with it and that 302 took a lot of abuse, but never faltered. Great job, Steve in highlighting the importance of the Fox body Mustangs of that era, they kept the pony car alive and helped bring back performance to American cars.

Back in 1986 I got my drivers license and talked my dad into buying me an svo. I knew nothing about the svo, only that I liked how it looked. It wasn’t until years later that I realized how special the car was compared to the gt. Remember that in 87 ford came out with a new gt which stole the thunder from the svo. In 86 the svo still had 84 bumpers while the 85 and 86 gt had moved on to new ones. I only had the car until 89. The fuel injection on the svo worked beautifully. I didn’t even know at the time that the svo was meant to rival the Porsche 944 turbo, with engine, 4 wheel disc brakes and even Porsche like rims. Thems were the days.

So many of us have countless stories of Fox bodies. I'm not a Ford guy at all but I have plenty of memories of them myself. Around the turn of the century when Fox 'stangs were cheap and plentiful a buddy of mine ended up with a 1985 "interceptor" notchback. No power anything, no air or cruise, radio block off, vinyl seats and heavy duty black industrial carpet. What it did have was a calibrated speedo (I believe 130mph but not sure) the 4 barrel HO engine and 5 speed stick as described here. He drove the hell out of that car for a couple years and then pulled the engine and fully built it into a 346. He polished each port, intake manifold, header, everything himself over about 9 months. He also changed the rear end although not sure what he put in there. Anyway first day at the track he got kicked out because he was too fast for the class and the track was strict about roll cages, 6 point harnesses, battery disconnect, etc. It was one of the coolest things I had ever seen by that point in life watching the attendant take his mirror tag and wipe the numbers off his windows. Unfortunately he ended up wrapping the car around a light post months later :(

I would say that was true after 1987, when they went to the single/aero headlights. @@bad74maverick1 I can't say enough, how much I miss no option vehicles (I live in the rust belt). Last summer when gas was $5 for low test, I had a 1999 Ford Escort getting 42 mpg. so i was running around, taking 10 hr round trips to the big national car shows--the drive was a bear with no AC and a tin can of a car, but it's fun to look back on. then that thing crapped out at Thanksgiving, and every friend who pulled the "hey we haven't seen you in a while, we need to get together" was too busy to shup me around to look for a replacement car (I'm single and my other car was down for repairs). so my female friend said she'd help but on her terms--no more private sellers, no more old cars (i prefer old because i know how many design faults show up in appliances of any sort--when its an older model, you know what's what). i got a 2018 Ford Focus that was nearly as loaded as my old 1986 Turbo T bird was, and that POS lasted all of 2 months...at Christmas last year I found out Ford had known since 2010 the automatic transaxle was a faulty design, no way to solve it. so my trans went and i junked a $17,000 car. then had to cough up another $14K because my other car is a summer-only vehicle and i still needed a daily driver. so, yeah i like a car with as little to worry about as possible :) the "other car" is a 243,000 mile Olds 442. no options but power steering (numb) and an automatic trans (manual valve body at least). I had to add power front disc brakes. Of course stuff breaks on it, but i'm not chasing electrical issues like power windows. Your car is great, and smart of you to ditch the 19lb injectors. heck, my t bird had something like 36'ers stock. My 86 GT is rusted, it was a daily but I do intend to get it on the road (the 442 came up as a deal too good to pass on). it has a 1988 5.0 engine so i won't mind swapping to an EFI 351W truck engine i have, it'll get stroked. i won't make a racer out of it, just something to turn low rpms with its 2.73:1 gears or so--i could get it to do 30 mpg by coasting down hills and up to stoplights, so i'll see what i can do with the tall deck windsor. or maybe just stroke out the 302 and save some weight, i want it to be a long distance roadtripper. i loved having the hatchback, picked up a lot of good deals since i didn't have a pickup truck at that time. but i'll keep the AC on it...i'm middle aged, and driving for hours with the windows down in the 90 degree heat is just beatin' me up. Meanwhile, every time i see a fox body getting torn up for parts...i want to save the thing :) i tend to accumulate parts when they're too cheap to pass up, i 'd love to use 'em rather than sell them off.

Dennis, no fan of VI, played the lead in segment of 'Under Pressure' (Bowie/Queen) and commented "I love Bowie." For us old rockers, it was great!!

I had an 85 GT 5 speed, and I loved it! I traded my 82 GT because I wanted the 4 bbl and 5 speed trans. Had it for 7 years, only needing a heater core. Traded that in on an 88 MkVII LSC (it was just a nicer, more luxurious Mustang). Got the LSC for a great price, drove it for 5 years. I really do like the Fox platform!

Oh, about the 85: my goal was to find a Fairmont wagon and graft all the GT stuff onto that. I even was going to see if the whole front clip from the Mustang would fit the Fairmont. This was before the 88 LSC became available to me.

I had a 1982 Mustang GT as well. Do You remember the cool factory hood scoop! We e Were lucky to own the 1982 GT 4 speed 2 Barrels. The 1982 was the car that started it all. Mine was silver. Here we are 41 years later and the Mustang 5.0L is still going.

Back in the day, a Mustang GT hatchback with the back seat removed was one of the best gig-mobiles a musician could get. Tons of room for gear and plenty of power to move it.

I purchased my first new vehicle in 1989 - a Plymouth Acclaim LX - and with my “daily driver” needs taken care of, began planning for the first “collector vehicle” I would add to my stable. At the time, I had my sights set on a brand new short box / regular cab Dodge pickup! Unfortunately, it wasn’t until 1994 that I had enough money saved up to make a purchase and the new Dodge body style simply didn’t move me like the old-school square body trucks did……😕 Looking back with the benefit of hindsight, I often wonder what vehicle I would now purchase brand new in 1989 if I could pick something other than other than that Acclaim? I have to say, a 1989 Ford Mustang LX notchback with a V8 and manual transmission sure would look good in my collection right now…….🤔

I love how Ford put a "watch out zone" on the tach 1000 rpm BEFORE the 5800/5900 rpm redline. "WOAH! Watch it buddy! You are spinning this thing to practically 5000 RPM😱! Who do you think you are? Mario Andretti?! Take it down a notch before you scatter this Five-Point-Slow!!!" 🤦🏻‍♂️😂🤣 PS: I actually love these 85 last of the carbs!! And I love 4-eyed Foxes in general. Of course, I would go straight for the GM 525 hp LS3 with the hot cam, ditch the Hot Cam, install a GPI NFC 4 cam, Cadillac Racing lifters, 3/8" x .135" Cam Motion pushrods Comp Gold 1.72 aluminum roller tip rockers, Cam Motion 500 lb .700" double springs/titanium retainers, flycut the pistons to get around 11.8:1, combine it with a nice light TH350 and an 8.8" rear with 4.10s and go run some high 9s.

The 87 through 93 Fox bodied Mustangs in my personal opinion were the best looking, however, I did own an 85 GT which tended to become seriously tail happy when letting off the clutch to fast or in a panic stop, I think that's how most of them ended up in the junkyard unfortunately, but they were great cars, nonetheless...Steve Magnante, you're an incredibly knowledgeable guy and a true car guy, I love your channel, please keep on coming up with more content, you rock Steve, God bless!!!

When I re-enlisted, in 1984, I thought about a 5.0 stang. They were just too little. Bought a 5.0 TBird instead. Drove that car 20 yrs, 300k miles no issues at all. Some 17 yo kid went left of center and totaled it.

The earlier Mustangs with the TRX wheels were the ones with the metric sized tires. Stsrting in 1985, these had standard 15" wheels/tires and the SVO was 16", both with Goodyear Eagle GTs.
