Iceberg: Freedom of Speech, Just Watch What You Say was mind blowing when that shit dropped. Ice was the first rapper to really explain street life to people through music, and he didn't sugar coat it neither. So when people tried to say he was glorifying the thug life, that would never hold up in court. If you listened with an open mind the message was clear. I still rock that shit to this day because it's just as true.

I mean there was a pretty unhealthy culture surrounding Hip Hop at the time, right? It was a source of credibility to be a criminal among other things, and if you weren't in a gang you were seen as irrelevant. It's the unhealthy side of Rap, and given that the majority of modern Rap focuses on the same old concepts (guns, women, drugs) I don't think they have evolved at all, just that (successful) modern rappers are almost always posers (Papa Doc lookalikes) and have no idea what they are talking about. Ice-T was a Renaissance man, he didn't go the path of his contemporaries, and I think that really shows considering what happened to some of the big names at the time who were living that life (and so many lesser known people). The man is living life to the fullest, has a family, is a multimillionaire, and is in his sixties. Getting grief over making the right choice is pretty nuts.

The song appears on "The Iceberg/Freedom Of Speech...Just Watch What You Say" (1989). The music video is on KZbin, and the album is still available on both compact disc and vinyl. Warning: if you listen to this song, you'll never listen to today's hip hop the same way again. There's at least half a dozen rappers on this song along that are miles ahead of the biggest mainstream rap names of today. Listen to the tempo of the song, these guys are rapping at a million miles an hour. Also, it runs for eight minutes, not one profanity--I feel that today's hip hop relies way too much on profanity, it get tiresome very quickly. You didn't get that back in the day, and the N-word wasn't used three or four times a verse like it is today.

Now look at him..GREAT PERSON...Met him about 2 years with my Grandkids..he was a very nice man took pictures with all of us..Grandkids for the rest of the day talked about him and made sure my son and his wife seen all the pictures totally made there day..me myself been a fan for many years..in my younger days was security for movie stars and singers overseas met many..just certain ones are really cool people and down to earth..Ice-T was one...

@@MrTheHillfolk Ha! You know that whole scenario was wild. A bunch of middle-class mostly white kids in the Alternative music scene of the '80's getting schooled by Ice T. I would love to tell you what he talked about 😉! The guys that booked acts for our underground scene were way ahead of their time (Atomique and Random Thought'). I lucked out big time!

ice t was so ahead of his time , really the first rapper to make that mainstream jump to film he was a pioneer in this way , he is so well spoken and well read knowledge is the key to everything never quit gaining knowledge , turn the tv off the radio off and pick up a book .. theres a reason the old saying goes if you want to hide something from a black man put it in a book .. our history is all lies what we were told is false we never broke away from england the queen owns all of our properties look at the deed to your house really close it says we pay a tax to the crown and dont own any of our homes ..
