Boat Friends, I have some incredible news to share with you about this ship. It was truly an honor and privilege to receive an email last night from none other than the commanding officer of the Mackinaw, CDR Jeannette Greene, PE. She has extended an invitation for me and the Boat Friends to join her and the crew during an icebreaking operation in Duluth and Superior, before they head back to Michigan. This remarkable opportunity will allow me, and all of you, to see firsthand what it’s like to be on a this ship breaking through ice. CDR Greene shared that you can really hear the powerful sounds of the ice breaking while onboard, something she wants to showcase for all of the Boat Friends. This is an amazing chance to learn more about this extraordinary ship and the icebreaking process, and I am absolutely taking her up on the invitation. This experience wouldn’t be complete without recognizing the incredible leadership of CDR Greene, who commands one of the most remarkable vessels out there. I will be sharing the video of this unforgettable experience very soon. Please take a moment in this comment section to thank CDR Jeannette Greene, PE, and her crew for their service and for granting the Boat Friends this incredible opportunity. She will be reading these comments, so let’s make sure she knows how much we respect and appreciate everything she and her crew do each day, proudly wearing the uniform and providing vital service and protection on our waterways. ⛴️👍

What a great job from the coast guard. My nephew was on the Spar for three years Now stationed in Ft Lauderdale The Mackinaw has-helped my grandson when he was captain on the Joe Thompson. Headed for Escanaba Now he is a pilot out of Port Huron to Niagara. Which is very exciting. His house is on the St Claire and last May got to go on the pilot boat to pick him up. Most exciting thing I ever did at my young age of 84 Thank you for filling this. And a great job. Besides protecting us the Coast guard helps in so many ways. This was so interesting, and it gives people not familiar with the Port Cities of Duluth/Superior a good idea of the layout of the borders and lake. My dad was a Park Point kid born in 1920 and on Thanksgiving night of 2000 he wanted to go for a drive down Park Point, as we drove along he talked about his childhood and life on the Point, I think my favorite memory was of the fact that their skates were these long blades that strapped to their boots and they would take sails (a very easy to come by thing around there) and 2 to 4 of them would grab ropes and let the wind catch them and para-skate across the bay or along the point depending on the wind. Once they got out past the Sky Harbor point and had to lose the sail because a strong wind came up... Not such a fun night as it was a long skate back to the bridge area where they started! He also mortified me by telling my fiancée of the time as we went past the Coast Guard base that he hated the G'damn Coast Guard because when the local guys were off in WWII slogging through islands and jungles or trenching and marching endlessly in Europe those a@@holes were stateside knocking up wives (not my mom). My fiancée was a Coast Guard guy. 😂🤣

They only thought that was what the Coasties were doing. Been a rumor about them for forever! In reality, the other services are unaware that most of our counter intelligence is obtained by the coast guard during war and something like 40% of their people go to work for the CIA after WWII. Many go into intelligence and no one ever knows because they have a regular job. Their vacations in far flung places can be for pleasure, but they might also be delivering or picking up important papers for embassies and our government.

These ships are more than objects that move by us. There’s a lot going on in the world. However, these ships allow us to relax for a moment and think about something that is very pure and noncontroversial. I love these ships! I can tell you love the ships too. I’m lucky to live by this Lift Bridge here in Duluth, so the least I can do is post fun videos documenting the ships into peoples living rooms, on phones, or any other way they consume KZbin. My best friend sails with the Canadian Coast Guard. One winter, he did a month long tour on an icebreaker, stating that being in your bunk was like trying to sleep in a drum that someone was hammering on. He also said that around the locks and canals it was nothing to encounter 15 feet of slush. Boggles the mind and kudos to any sailor than do this year in and year out.

I attended Veteran's Day at my granddaughter's school a few months back. About 150 G-Is were in attendance, most of whom were retired. As the kids sang each military song, that group would stand up. Only one active person stood up when it came time for the U.S. Coast Guard to stand up. He looked around, and his smile got the biggest applause. We all had smiles on our faces! I grew up in the U.P. Michigan. Did you know that Michigan is the only state surrounded by four of the five Great Lakes? Which Great Lake is not touching Michigan? How do we remember the Great Lakes? Use mnemonics HOMES. Lake Huron, Lake Ontario, Lake Michigan, Lake Erie, and Lake Superior.
