You people kill me!! You can't let go of anything of the past can you? Yes, Matt Barlow is one of the greatest metal singers of all times and we as fans will always have those songs. Stu Block is phenomenal in his own right and we are sitting here debating who is better at this certain range or that certain range? Do you not see a problem here? Nobody doubts the greatness of both men, I think it is just hard for some people to let go of the past and move on with life! We should appreciate the fact that we still have great music like iced earth that we love at this time in the world and not take it for granted.

MrThomasreed stu os great at emulating Tim, and singing his own songs, however, he doesn't have the lower range to sing most of Barlow songs, like this one, the highs are good, but the intro is not that good, although one think he would DESTROY singing travel I stygian, would be awesome

@@joaogarcia6170 Doesn't have the lower range? Have you ever heard him in Into Eternity? Stu does have it and in all aspects is better than Matt. All what Matt has and Stu hasn't is the sound itself, but even in this case Dracula sounds better with Stu. Matt has a more doomy sound, Stu has a more evil one. If you want to sing power metal, Stu Block is the go-to man, not Matt Barlow.

@@spd7693 Nope. In the beginning the character is melancholic and later it explodes in anger. Stu has zero emotion in his interpretation, he hits the notes and that's it. See matt singing this, you can feel the anger. The color of Stu's voice in the high part of his range sound femenine and divorced of his timbre in the low notes.

Barlow pushes his voice to the limit in this song. He stretches his highs as far as they go and it sounds great cause you can tell he's pushing himself. Ripper sings it cleaner but his voice is naturally higher so that is expected. Stu has great highs too. He has that evil witch sounding, death metal high. Barlow wins only by default cause it's his song. But all three sound great and unique in their own way.

Ripper nailed this one too. I saw them with Ripper on vocals, and in Chicago they gave him a heavy metal version of a standing ovation for this one and Iced Earth gets "U.S.A." chants when they played When The Eagle Cries.

Barlow's transition from low to high in the intro is just about the coolest thing ever and Stu doesn't quite capture that, but his deep voice sounds amazing in the beginning and he handles the rapid-fire transitions well, in my opinion. The "for true love I shall avenge..."-part is a bit weird here, but all in all, Stu is a heckuva vocalist.

I really love Matt Barlow era of Iced Earth big time, but Stu Block also has an amazing voice. I love the three studio albums he has done especially Dystopia and Incorruptible. I really love the live album/DVD Live In Ancient Kourion big time. I love listening to Live In Ancient Kourion as much as I do listening to Alive In Athens. Some of the songs on Live In Ancient Kourion that I really love are Melancholy, Ten Thousand Strong, Dark City, I Died For You, Damien, Dante's Inferno, and this one Dracula. This might be blasphemy for most Iced Earth fans, but I don't want Matt Barlow back in Iced Earth. He was in the band two times and left on his own both times. Matt will always be the classic singer for Iced Earth, but Stu Block is what Iced Earth needs. Stu Block has been giving everything he has got since he joined. If Jon Schaffer fired Stu Block like he did Tim Owens just to get Matt Barlow back for a third time, I would be pissed off.

I want to add something to all the hate Stu gets, by die-hard Barlow fans. I went around and played this live version and a live version with matt to quite a few of my friends without telling them anything else. Then I asked them, which vocal performs they prefered technically and emotionally. And surprisingly Stu Block won over Matt Barlow! Why? Most of them pointed out, that Barlow forces out the tones, while it sounds like it‘s really easy for Stu. Moral of the story: don‘t call a „cover“ bad, just because it‘s not the original singer!

I'm going to say it. The singer does not make this band. Jon Schaffer is what makes Iced Earth Iced Earth. He is Iced Earth. He can tomorrow just kill the band if he so wanted to. Now people can fight over who the better singer is for the band. But at the end of the day the best singer is who ever Jon feels is the right one. Just as Tuomas Holopainen is to Nightwish and Chuck Schuldiner was to Death. You take out the main song writer and the band is dead.

If Plagues of Babylon is a sign of things to come then would that really be a bad thing? Sorry to say it but even though Iced Earth is Schaffer's band, his vision for it has become very stagnant and stale in recent times. Maybe it's time for the main song writer to loosen up the reigns a little and let some outside influence weave its way into the Iced Earth sound, after all they used to have a second main songwriter in original guitarist Randy Shawver who's writing was a big part of the way the first three albums sound and those are still Iced Earth's best to this day. Now granted Schaffer managed to do well as the only main creative force at first (Dark Saga and Something Wicked this Way Comes both manage to be very good despite the sudden simplification in musical structure) eventually he started steadily running out of good ideas (Horror Show = half awesome/half filler, Glorious Bullshit = boring plodding mess completely devoid of testicles, Framing Armageddon = one of the only two albums since Horror Show that actually has some creative value, Crucible of Man = solid opening portion but after A Gift or a Curse ends this one turns rather dull real quick, Dystopia = solid and fun release albeit somewhat generic sounding. And then we have Plagues of Babylon which basically marks the end of Glorious Bullshits reign as Iced Earth's worst album. Yes indeed Jon Schaffer is what makes Iced Earth Iced Earth and without him the band would seize to exist but honestly Schaffer's baby has been a mere shell of it's former self for the last several years now anyway so it's not like we'd be missing much and also considering the singers seem to be one of the very few aspects of this band still worth listening to I'd say at this point they might as well be the ones making this band.
