Math time: What is the probability that Ivy will die against the 3 silver axe great knights? It can't happen unless an enemy crits. Chain guard means at least 2 enemies need to hit. First off, true hit conversion. The face value hit rate of the great knights is 62%. That's 73% true hit. The probability of losing chain guard and getting hit exactly once is 3*(.73*.73*.27)=44% At 8% crit, Ivy has a 3.5% of dying in this manner. The probability of losing chain guard and getting hit twice is .73^3=24%. Both hits need to not crit, so multiply that by (1-0.92^2.) That's another 6.0% chance to die. These outcomes are mutually exclusive, so they can be added together. There's a 9.5% chance that Ivy would have died there, even with chain guard. Rough. This shines a spotlight on the most overlooked stat in the game. Luck. The main role is to decrease the odds of enemy crit rate. Most units have high enough luck this isn't a big issue. Ivy has the lowest luck in the game though, so to be a good off tank, she needs a fix. My favorite fix is to have her run Bolganone with a Echoes engraving. This gives Dodge+50, making her functionally crit immune, so she can even safely tank killer weapons. You lose 1 Mt, but it also drops weight by 1, which helps speed fix. This disadvantage of this method is she'll be in danger every time she decides to use a different weapon. Bolganone fits her well enough though that I find this acceptable, and simply don't use any other tomes with her. You could try other engravings as well, but they seem more well suited to other purposes. Dawn is for dodge tanks. Beginnings is all around useful, but Ivy would appreciate more than +5 dodge. Academy increases hit rate, which is good, but makes weapons heavier, which Ivy doesn't like. Fates is best for crit builds. Fire works nicely, but is only available late game. Another good option is Eirika's skill, Dodge +10. It's cheap, at 500 SP, 400 Bond Fragments. This gets her out of crit range for most enemies, but she'll still be vulnerable to killer weapons, as well an occasional low crit%from some enemies with high dex or weapons with small crit enhancements (steel, shine, etc.) She'll also be able to freely switch weapons. The big disadvantage is that this takes up a valuable skill slot. I'd favor this setup on a unit which has a variety of weapons they use rather than Ivy, who can get by with just Bolganone. Running an Emblem with a luck bonus can fix the issue. Ivy's luck is low enough that Byleth and Eirika can boost Luck by up to +12 and +10, which is sufficient for Ivy. They also both boost Magic by up to +3. Byleth boosts speed by up to 3, while Eirika boosts Dex by up to 4, which combined with luck, is hit +18, which some Ivy critics would appreciate. Micaiah and Lucina also give luck boosts, but Ivy needs more. I also feel that all of these Emblems are better suited to other units (second thought, Eirika seems reasonable. I've thought of her as physical, but her magic boost is only a little less than her physical damage boost.) Lastly, Timerra's racket of Solm reduces crit by 5 for nearby enemies. Ivy needs more support from this, and it involves being hyper aware of enemy crit rates, who's vulnerable, and positioning. But it can be legit handy. Learning to luck tank is a skill I picked up while doing iron man attempts. Sometimes, I'd find myself using Pandreo to tank some rather powerful physical hits solely because he had the luck to guarantee they don't crit, while my tankier units would be exposed to a 3-4% chance.

the most broken way to tank is using lucina on griffing knight alear + ur fliers (usually chloe ivy and kaguetsu) lucina fits perfect to alear (pasive +3 dmg near allys + dual support, alear have supp with anyone so it gives insane avoid + avoid engrave no one is going to atack alear) with this strat u can clears maps full of enemys so easy. pd: if u want to use ofensive alear (wyvern or griffing knight) u can use griffing knight zelkov with lucina to do the same (with +10 avoid but not the +3 dmg) bc he has supp with ivy kagetsu and alear. ivy is good with spd taker + time pulse if u dont want to use lyn on her (bc corrin ring is good on her) and bolganone with sigurd/chrom engrave and she can solo maps with bond shield

Stat comparison between this lvl17 Ivy, and your lvl12 Ivy on the GBA run : HP 49 / 47 BLD 9 / 12 STR 12 / 11 MAG 28 / 28 DEX 21 / 20 SPD 19 / 23 DEF 21 / 21 RES 25 / 26 LCK 6 / 8 => Random growths are cracked.

Might want to feed her some Goddess Statues though, because that Luck stat is very unreliable for tanking. Normally her poor Luck isn't that big an issue if she's being used as a Magic Carry, but tanks really benefit from Luck to prevent getting their defensive stats pretty much negated by a crit (unless they're Louis or something, where a physical crit is going to do single digits damage). Or you can just place Timerra within 3 squares of her, Racket of Solm is one of those personals that is actually really good but you never really get to see how much work it puts in. Off topic, do you do any builds with the Bracelets? I've been running a Jade tank build with Hector and she can more or less solo entire waves of physical units while making use of Quick Riposte and Revanche with an accuracy engrave.

I think the most frustrating thing about Hector is that he'll boost your tank's defense so high that the AI just ignores your unit, making enemy phasing actually frustrating. Only mages will attack your unit, or if they set up back up units to chain attack off of hits that are outside your counter attack range. It was so bad that even my Diamant, who has mediocre defensive stats (compared to a general or great knight) was getting ignored. Very lame!

@@loffel1700 I typically don't Engage with Hector, just have him on her for the Quick Riposte buff. She takes very low damage from enemy attacks, but not enough to cause them to ignore her completely. Alternatively, you can also throw her into waves of Backup units if you give her Pair Up, as the AI doesn't see that their chain attacks won't do anything and will all just rush her down. Very good for later chapters where the reinforcement spam is just unreal.
