I was born in Neskaupstad & we moved to Australia in 1969 when I was seven. You NEVER stop missing it. I torture myself with youtube! I have been back twice & still speak the language fluently with my seven brothers and mother. I often cry watching these. The homesickness never leaves you. there is not a country in the world more beautiful...

This video made me cry. I'm from Italy and of course is known that Italy is a nice place to be visited, but Iceland landscapes are stunning, I want to visit Iceland and learn its culture and see live all the mother nature's forces that live in this magic island.

The younger generation speak English but not the older folk ~ the ones most interesting to listen to! It didn't bother my hubby when we visited relatives who didn't speak a word of English but I'm sure it would if we lived there. Constantly translating would be a pain after awhile. You are going to LOVE it!! The scenery is breathtaking, the food is incredible, the air & water so pure and the people are wonderful. It's completely safe too ~ I'd hitchhike the whole country alone! Have fun in June!

I have been an "Aussie" for too long & Australia is a wonderful place too. My Aussie husband would never be able to learn our language & although he loves Iceland ~ he agrees that it would eventually be a problem. I have a legion of relatives in Iceland but here I have 7 brothers, my mum, neices, nephews and life-long friends. I could never leave them all to live so far away. Every Icelander who leaves feels the same way. It's like Iceland keeps a part of your heart and soul...

Depends on what you like. I was born there but raised in Australia and have been back summer and winter. My husband and I loved winter ~ it's the REAL Iceland! The hours of daylight did my head in in summer & I couldn't sleep. June - Sept. if you like summer and Oct. - Feb. if you want to experience winter there. Christmas/New Year is like a fairy tale. The scenery is breathtaking any time you go.

Australia is wonderful too and has been my home for so long. My husband and I discussed moving there to Iceland he went there for the first time. He just loved everything about it. But he would never be able to learn our language and eventually, that would become a problem. I have tons of relatives there but could never leave my family and life-long friends here. If I am ever widowed, I plan to move there for 12 months to lick my wounds and see every inch of the country.

The Scottish Highlands are on my bucket list. What a beautiful and haunting part of the world. Icelandic grammer is VERY confusing!! There are so many ways to say every word depending on the context. I didn't learn the language "rules" as we left before I went to school but I do speak it quite well. Everyone was so shocked when I went back the 1st time after 37 years. How I would love to hear Eyjafjallajokull said with a Scottish accent! It must sound wonderful! Quite an achievement!

I'm a Scotsman, a Highlander, and I'll always praise and love Scotland. But I have agree with you - I have to admit Iceland has us beat for beauty; I love the country and the people. One of the few places in the world I could live. As for the language... well I had an Icelandic au pair, and I'm told I can now say 'Eyjafjallajökull' like a native lol - so pronouncing isn't so hard when you get used it. But the grammar... phew. I'm not sure how well I could ever learn to *speak* it!

Ireland was the best place I have ever been, but I still greatly regret never making it to Iceland. I will return to Ireland soon, though, so maybe then.

Takk fyrir. Yes, 3 weeks and no amount of blankets on the windows and sleeping pills made any difference. My brain still knew it was daylight. I dozed for minutes at a time and when I came home, my husband was horrified. My eyes were swollen and purple. I slept for an entire week! Xmas in Iceland is number 1 on my bucket list! Hubby and I were there 6 years ago on Jan 1st and got to see all the wonderful lights. Even the cementaries were beautiful. Enjoy!! Show me the way to go home...

Ooops ~ komdu saell og blessadur! We left Neskaupstad in Februar 69 during an extremely harsh winter. When we arrived in Perth ~ it was 42 degrees! We were horrified and mamma cried. Pabbi was so homesick that he commited suicide six years leater. I love cold and snow but I guess that if I had never left Iceland, I would be tripping off to Spain every year to get sunshine. Last visit back was during the summer & the daylight did my head in. I didn't sleep for 3 weeks! Winter visit was wonderful!

Sorry to hear about your father. I've heard from many that have moved to other countries with a lot of sun that they miss the snow in Iceland. Seeing as I live in Norway and its not that different I can't agree with that. But you can get too much of everything. You didn't sleep for three weeks? Thats a long time! I guess its something you get used to when living in Iceland to be able to sleep when there is no darkness. I'm visiting Iceland this Christmas. Really looking forward to it!

Quite beautiful. And I would share this wonderful clip with a select foreign friends that are kind of hooked on Iceland, … only if it wasn’t for the Landsbanki advert at the passenger loading bridge at the beginning and end of this amazing clip. It should not be a newsflash to Icelanders that Landsbanki does not exactly have the best of reputations in, and especially off, Icelandic shores!
