hello from vestmannaeyjar i love when people talk about our little island. 1:32 i did not know that, can you please make like an hour long video going into detail about all the volcanos on Heimaey or atleast a 10 min one :) . ive been a fan of yours for a while and enjoy when you upload something new for us to learn about volcanos.

I wonder how we could support vestmannaeyjar in such a project. Vestmannaeyjar: do you like chocolate chip cooki;es? The flaw in my suggestion is that my son was stationed in Kuwait many years ago and I sent him a box of CCCs, each one loving wrapped in bubble wrap, and they still arrived as a collection of crumbs

In 1978 my parents and I were flying from Luxemburg to New York, with a stopover on Iceland. When approaching the Iceland’ coast, my father was invited into the cockpit, where the pilots pointed out the then 16-year old Surtsey!

My father was a geologist doing undergraduate field work in Iceland at the time. The way he told the story, he was the third person to set foot on Surtsey, once things had calmed down a bit. The only witnesses to this event were the first, second and fourth people to stand on the island, so I'm a bit short on documentation.

I do remember hearing about Surtsey forming back in the early 1960's. It was one of the coolest things going on at the time, because it was the creation of something totally new. It is good to hear that wildlife and some vegetation have "taken root" there, because it will help to stabilize the island, and hopefully make it permanent. Of course, in this world, permanent is a risky word.

The HOT SPOT that is drifting SE along the Hawaiian Island Archipelago has another submarine island in the process of growing SE of the BIG ISLAND of Hawaii. The newest island there is already named Loihi. Loihi is due to surface someday depending on how much lava is deposited. It's got a way to go, as it's still 1000 meters below the surface of the ocean. Maybe someday, 2000 years from now, there will be fresh land to visit and hang out. I just hope Humanity is still around then.

Is the difference between surtsey and the Tonga volcano ultimately because Iceland is basically on a mid oceanic ridge and Tonga isn't?
@michaeldeierhoi409611 ай бұрын
As the narrator noted beginning at 1:25 there were several reasons why the two volcanoes differed. The first one mentioned had to do with the less viscous lava produced by Surtsey which produced basalt. Honga Tonga by contrast is a strato volcano that produced lava that was much more viscous. When magma is more viscous it can clog up a volcano vent resulting in pressure building up from accumulating gases until an eruption occurs. In the case of Hunga Tonga the pressure was especially high to produce such an explosive eruption. Also Hunga Tonga erupted hundreds of times over thousands of years. The Surtsey erupted only once.
