A volcano has erupted on the Reykjanes peninsula of south-west Iceland after weeks of intense earthquake activity.
About 4,000 people were earlier evacuated from the fishing town of Grindavik and the nearby Blue Lagoon geothermal spa was closed.
The eruption started north of the town at 22:17 local time (22:17 GMT), the Icelandic Met Office said.
The region around the capital Reykjavik has been experiencing an increase in earthquake activity since late October.

My wife and I vacationed in Iceland in mid-October and left just before the earthquakes started. It is a beautiful country with wonderful people who made us feel welcome. They love to smile and laugh. And eat ice cream😁. It makes me sad that the people of Grindavik may lose their town to the lava flow. The earthquake damage was bad enough. We drove past Grindavik on our way to the house we rented. Iceland is nicknamed "the land of fire and ice" for a reason

This particular volcano hasn't erupted since 1240 and has been dormant for 800 years. Even though the peninsula itself is seismically active and there have been other eruptions as noted in this interview. Hopefully, the southern portion will not increase and continue to diminish and the eruptions concentrate on the north side which will cause the lava to flow in the opposite direction and away from the town of Grindávik.

This will come as a relief to the people of the area because they have lived with uncertainty since 10th November as to where this would happen and could do nothing until they knew where it would be. I followed the 2021 eruption and have been following the same Icelander's channel since the warning earthquakes began on 10th November. Grundavik was evacuated several weeks ago with about a quarter of the town so badly damaged by earthquakes, it cannot be repaired, even if it escapes this lava flow.

There's literally only a small cities population on all of Iceland. That fishing village is more than 10% of the population. If that's all there is in the way of the flow then that's it, you can't damage volcanic rock much more. Thankfully there will be minimal clean up or disruption.

Hmmm... yes but no. There's really only magma in two gloops on either side of the planet. Google: mysterious blobs under earths crust science can't explain. They can't explain why it's that way but they can very very well explain what it does and what it means for the crust and those who live in either ring of fire. The rest is overlapping rock grooving around as a few plates that rub and pull layers down sometimes and push layers up other times. There's a lot of massive salt deposits, Google great lake salt mine. The photos are wild to think about. That much evaporation of salty seas again and again. Then... billions of years later. We eat it. 😂 Magma isn't everywhere under us.

I returned from a holiday in Iceland just 10 days ago. Its a lovely country whose people are warm hearted and welcoming. It's a shame that the town of Grindavik looks to be rendered uninhabitable by this latest eruption, but I guess when you live on a volcanically active area of land, you're always faced with the risk of losing your home at almost any moment. This particular eruption has really given everyone a good run for their money, with no-one knowing for certain where the molten rock would break surface, or even when... and I don't think anyone predicted that it would come up where it has, half way between and to the East of both the Town and Blue Lagoon/ power station!

Is this eruption a preferrable type of eruption in the grand scheme of things? I understand that no eruption near a city, town or village is a good thing, but it could be a lot worse maybe? If it relieves pressure slowly, could that be better than the big sudden blast that could happen sometimes?
@Varasalvi2
@Varasalvi2 5 ай бұрын
This eruption, while stronger than previous ones in that area isn't actually that powerful on the historic scale. Yes, this kind of an eruption is preferable because it comes up through a wide crack instead of a single point so the force is distributed over a wider area, at least to begin with. It's also preferable because it's not under an Icecap like many have been in the past, hot meeting cold = explosions, a lot of ash, and usually a flood follows because of the melting Ice which tends to take out roads and bridges. Similar results for undersea eruptions minus the flood. New vents could open up during the eruption, but they tend to be close by the original vent. I'm not an expert in any of this by the way, so grain of salt and all that. I just live in Iceland and have experienced a fair few eruptions in my life.

Less weight from ice as it melts the more active the volcano gets. Why well i dont get why i just know why but the weight of the ice makes it stey dormant longer but as it melts it becomes more active. I seen a video on a documentary about it a few years ago i just forget the physics of it all lol.

Depends if it goes explosive and throws ash into the atmosphere. Usually from a cinder cone type of volcano ( i think, it has been a long time since i wrnt to school)

I'm sure Icelandic people aren't too bothered about the eruption as volcanic activity is common with the country growing larger due to them. As long as people are out of harms way.
@bujin1977
@bujin1977 5 ай бұрын
When it happens out in the less inhabited areas, I'm sure they aren't too bothered. When it happens this close to a town of nearly 4000 people, a major tourist attraction and a power plant that supplies energy to 10% of the population (especially when it happens in the middle of winter), they might be a bit more bothered.
@andriandrason1318
@andriandrason1318 5 ай бұрын
@@bujin1977 Definitely does not does not supply 10%, Iceland is the largest electricity producer per capita. Of which most comes from hydro power, I think its safe to say we would be alright.

@@andriandrason1318Just going off what is reported - that the Svartsvengi power plant supplies 30,000 people which isn't far off 10% of Iceland's population. 7.8% to be more precise. Still a large number of people. But as you say, you'll be fine. From what I learned when I was there a few months ago, the Icelandic people are very resourceful and resilient, and I'm sure you would make up for that loss in other ways without too much trouble.
