Back in 1965-68 when as a student from Ireland, I worked and lived in Vestmanneyjar. Houses there were built by pouring concrete into a shutter which at its core contained a skeleton of reinforced steel, locking the floor, walls and roof together as one totally rigid structure, Cracking and separation shown on your video tells me that such high performance design is certainly not practiced in Grindavik, and I wonder why this is so, particularly on the Rekjanes peninsula. However knowing the great strength and character of the Icelandic people, I know that historically, no challenge that nature throws before you, will weaken your determination to succeed. Being Icelandic, I'm so touched and proud of people's willingness to help the residence of Grindavik. Companies are offering free service, big discounts, delaying morgage and utility payments and all over people are opening their doors to families and indivituals they have never met. Many employee unions are offering vacation homes owned by them at no cost and others are offering places to house horses, sheep, chickens and other pets. My uncle and his family live in Grindavik and their home is destroyed. They bought it only 6 months ago and now the only thing to do is bulldoze it down and build a new one. The cracks could maybe be filled up, but the foundation is compromized.

People being allowed into the town to retrieve more belongings and pets reminds me of just before Mt St Helens blew in Washington State, USA on May 18, 1980. State patrol were allowing people into the "Red Zone" for 2 hours to retrieve what they could -- the day before the volcano blew up. Thank you for your coverage, it's appreciated! Yes, I remember when Mt. St. Helens blew, I stood in my back yard and watched the plume of smoke and ash, it was raining ash and towns east of Mt. Saint Helens were totally blacked out. Praying for your country and for those affected by this volcano activity.

I am from Grindavik, born and bread, albeit moved from there some years ago. Family on both sides of my parents reside there and their lives have been catapulted into uncertainty. Watching the news and see this unfold is anxiety educing and all my sympathy is with those who have had to leave their homes and livelihood behind facing the fact that they may never be able, or maybe not want to return. Saddened to see parts of Grindavik in disarray by mother nature.

It's a special breed of people In Grindavik and I always loved to come there to work during fishing season, if the harbour will still be there in a few weeks, there will some fish processing remain in town, but the town might however become a tourists sensation in some form

Oh, this breaks my heart. When i visited Iceland several years ago, Grindavik was the first place I went after a long flight. I randomly decided to drive south along the coast from the airport before going to Reykjavik. I had lunch at Café Bryggjan at the harbor and had the most wonderful bowl of lobster bisque. The town was lovely and the people I met there were so nice. I hope for the best for all who are impacted by this.

I’m also a native Californian and want to share that the quakes we experienced in this Grindavik 2 weeks ago for 24 hours before we returned to the states felt different than CA quakes for some reason. We experienced up to 5.1 quakes there at the Retreat at Blue lagoon. They felt shorter, more superficial shaky than deep rumbling. I don’t know, I can’t explain it well, but I can say my travel partner and I- both Californians-did not feel afraid or overly rattled! Perhaps if we had homes etc it would have that same terror but the quakes themselves just felt different. ❤

This is such heartbreaking news. I can't find the right words hard to say over this. I want to say I hope they can go home again, but it's not looking so good is it. Those steaming cracks would definitely send me running away. I just hope all the animals in the village can be brought to safety as well. Tell them all to come to Canada. I've thought of the beautiful before footage you uploaded last week as I've watched updates from various creators. Last week's video and ones you've shot in the the more distant past will remind people of the good memories they experienced in Grindavik. They're going to need that. Thinking of everyone affected by this!

My family visited Iceland in July and experienced the eruption at Litli-Hrútur. We spent a bit of time in Grindavik and ate at hjá höllu for lunch. The building the restaurant was in is very close to that fracture. Having been to Grindavik, it really saddens me to know that this town will permanently change as a result of the damage and worse, no one knows how much it more is to come. I pray the people of Grindavik will be able to return someday and if not, they manage to re establish their lives elsewhere.

How terrible it must have been to experience the constant earth movements at such close range and then sudden evacuation with no idea of what the future will bring. Gylfi I have been watching your updates for a couple years, I think I signed up when you had less than 1000 subscribers. You are a huge ambassador for Iceland! I developed a soft spot for Grindavik because of your videos and I am so sorry to see this occurring. Praying the animals can flee to safety and that there are no casualties. The damage so far is astonishing!

This is such a great way to get a better perspective of the impact on the country. I visited Iceland 4 years ago and fell in love with the landscape, the history, and the people.
