Icelandic Highway at Risk - Increased Ground Temperature

The road between Reykjavik and the South Coast has warmed up to almost 100c in only a few days so it's monitored well since the road is on the fissure swarm of Hengill volcano. This is also highly unusual but geologists say it's nothing to worry about, although the temperature has risen by 10C the last 24 hr according the the thermometers that were placed in a drill hole recently.
If you happen to be in Iceland and want to see what's cooking, this is the exact location: goo.gl/maps/ZVxeDK1mim45aCQF9
The thermal drone I'm using is Autel Evo 640T V2 and I will be taking it for a spin one the road in a few days but the weather forecast is dull right now. Else I would have gone to Reykjavik already. Want check out the Autel Thermal Drones? it'e here:

Well, I can definitely say that's a first. I am reminded of what happened to that farmer in Mexico where the ground beneath his feet got hot and then a volcano pretty much started erupting.

This sort of thing also happens in Yellowstone National Park on occasion, roads being baked by volcanic heat.

Yes we might be seeing something similar, it's however never occurred before in Iceland to the best of my knowledge, not by a road, but there was however major change in the hot springs in Hvergerði after an earthquake in 2008, 2 km from this spot.

Our roads get a "baking" here in the Central Valley of California in the Summer. But, it usually comes from the top down, like a broiler, not bottom up, like a barbecue. Also, here wastewater is used to recharge the geothermal wells. It would seem that they could that in Iceland, as well. However, there may be some geological differences. That pumping does produce minor seismic activity, but nothing on the scale of fracking quakes. Btw your footage is breathtaking, but I hope you get the weather break you want. Can't wait to see what the thermal cam reveals! Happy trails and Via Con Dios!💜 🌍🍀✌️😎🐎

This is far bigger than just this small area & I'm amazed there isn't more about this in the news - On Monday I noticed steam coming from the ground in two new places and a hot spring where there wasn't one before in southern Hafnarfjörður area (the steam had stopped by Wednesday & the spring has certainly diminished, though I haven't been able to check if it is still flowing the past 2 days), and there was someone else who noticed increased geothermal activity around Gunnuhver Hot Springs at around the same time. This all points to a sudden increase in ground temperatures over a large area in a relatively short time period! It is all quite strange as there hasn't been the seismic activity you would expect with a magma intrusion, & an increase in temperatures over such a large area is unexpected, so perhaps the scientists have been quiet because they don't know what is going on?
@JustIcelandic

Interesting, you can send me a mail with the location in Hafnarfjörður, like a Google map link... might check it out with the thermal drone, however it's a drone fligh ban coming up due to the meeting in Reykjavík, but i might be there before it starts, it covers the Reykjanes highway and parts of Hafnarfjörður...my channel name a gmail is the email

In northern California, waste water is injected back into the fissure formations to help manage the waster water from the local towns. Earthquakes are common in the Big Geysers Geothermal Field. I recall having the micro quakes almost everyday back in the 70's when I was working in that industry. Thank you for the very nice and informative video!

I suspect you will have some fantastic imaging of the highway and its environs from your thermal drone! During the 2018 eruption in Hawaii, someone used thermal imaging to determine where the magma was traveling underground so that some of the people in affected areas would know whether they needed to evacuate. Just like there in Iceland, places began steaming. The imaging showed it was go time. Hopefully, your imaging won't show that as a needed measure! Can't wait to see what your footage reveals!

Yes the most recent temp. reading from the thermometer they dug down says it's still warming up, like me, just finished charging all batteries and getting ready to take off, this thermal footage is just something have to get, simple as that...

Thank you again for good coverage. My question is, how did they notice the steam heat on this highway embankment? Do people travelling by send in reports? or is it part of regular maintenance work?

Makes sense that the recent earthquake would oven new cracks and voids within the earth for the spring melt to seep into.

This earthquake did actually ensure that I had footage from the road for this video. I shot it when I drove by shortly after it since I suspected that I might need it. for not for this kind of video though :)

In Lanzarote in Timanfaya park they have a barbeque over a volcanic hot spot. Anywhere in Iceland that does that?

It seems odd to me that cooling magma should relatively quickly cause a rise in temperature at the surface. Could it be rising magma heating the overlying aquifers?
@JustIcelandic
@JustIcelandic Жыл бұрын
This is actually getting way too complicated for me, an expert was saying that the dropping pressure due to the power plant could be causing this spike there, but when i get back with thermal footage, i will dive into this for sure. Will be soon

I liked the blue and green lakes. Can you tell us, one day, why they are such different colours and more importantly to me, do they have fish in them and if so what fish. Over 3 million British people like fishing, show us what you've got.
@JustIcelandic
@JustIcelandic Жыл бұрын
The green lake got it's cooler from the sulphur, no fish there :) but we do have many fine lakes with trout, and salmon in some cases. With this pass you can access 37 lakes so it's a good way to start, some them are good, others just ok, and the best lakes are often more expensive, but we have plenty of options. veidikortid.is

Its definitely a heat pulse, but will it have a magma intrusion associated with it?
@JustIcelandic

More likely some changes in geothermal activity but this is however on the Hengill volcano fissure swarm, but i think we will know more soon, this just came up.

I think I have seen this happens in New Sealand, too. Have just seen in our German news, in Spain they get power directly from the heat of the ground, you do not need any turbines, no steam, don’t know how it works, but it works. You only have to dig a hole in the ground and put this …thing on it. That would be ideal for Iceland, because it works the better, the colder it is in the air. And you do not cause this man made earthquakes. I do not know how s it called, but I think you can google it.
