Superb clarity of exposition. This cuts through so much un-necessary twoddle and gets to the heart of the crucial principles. Many, many, many thanks for this.

I just started listening to your mp3s and they are so much more natural than anything I've ever come across. I'm just glad no one in my house speaks Icelandic. I don't want to have anyone see me walking around trying to say drunk properly lol

I learnt more in those 17 minutes than i have in the last year. Thank you very much for posting this. I am a little perplexed however, as to where you are meeting all these fish...

It's always great to see you, Alaric! When I was at University (many many years ago), one of the compulsory exams was "German philology", we studied the history and the evolution of the Germanic languages. It was so difficult, and there was a high percentage of people who failed the exam, so I left it at the very end of my academic path. Well, I was so fascinated by it that I wished I could have continued with more, but it was not possible for me (I was already writing my dissertation). Anyhoo... I loved so much this subject that I was one of the few ones who got 30/30 cum laude (and compliments of the professor). My fascination for germanic languages is still alive even after 23 years, this is why I find your videos extremely interesting and fascinating! Keep up with the good work, Alaric, and thank you for taking the time to make them.

The mp3 course is just Brilliant! I feel I've made more progress in the few days I've gone through it than I did the whole week before when I started learning Icelandic

I wish I had studied German philology. It is one of my regrets. Thankfully I "get" the cases (declension) having studied other languages, both ancient and modern. I loved this video Dr Hall.

Amazing !! I just started learning Icelandic (which I find grammatically very easy as I learnt German as a child - Even thouh I can't speak it anymore-, and did a one year course in Latin) and you make it cristal clear. I think in a few weeks I'll be able to have a conversation in Icelandic. VERY HELPFUL

Very useful. I'm not studying Icelandic (though I would like to someday), but I am digging into Gothic, and I think one of these would be handy. It's getting to be a pain to keep flipping through my notebook of tables.

really like your mp3 course and the magic sheet. But I am a visual learner and it find it super confusing that your cases are in a different order to what they usually are in Icelandic. Any change you could change that? :O on BIN and everywhere else it is usually nom, acc, dat., gen.

Just wondering - why the odd order of cases? I have seen NGDA and NADG before, but never NAGD.
@pengy65
@pengy65 2 жыл бұрын
E.V. Gordon used NAGD in "Introduction to Old Norse", and Michael Barnes also in "New Introduction to Old Norse", and Mitchell & Robinson in "Introduction to Old English" use NAGD, although two other OE books I have use NGDA. For modern Icelandic, both Einarsson and Neijmann use NADG. Since Alaric said he based his magic sheets on Peter Baker's magic sheet of Old English, Baker also uses NAGD, so I'd guess it is either that, or a carryover from Old Norse studies.
