Hey Kody followed your advice and framed a 24x36 garage slab with Nudura blocks.
@beurky4 жыл бұрын
Cool. I've usually just put EPS foam up against the inside of my formwork but the half ICF blocks are neat that you can screw into the forms. I also would frame on the concrete and add would 2" of exterior insulation so the transition from slab to framing is seamless. But this solves that problem. Nice work.
@fishon73013 жыл бұрын
Yes but they are screwed to the forms from inside. How do you get the forms off without tearing up the foam?
@beurky3 жыл бұрын

@christophergruenwald50544 жыл бұрын
Why didn’t you put radiant floor heat tubing in if you are insulating the slab so well? Tubing is cheap, the insulation is the expensive part and it’s just the best way to heat anything.

I agree with that completely. We use spray foam to do these crazy haunched slabs.

Do you coat the exterior of the ICF forms with something for protection before back filling?
@tombrown032 жыл бұрын
I don’t understand why you would carve out the foam. Aren’t you going to put continuous foam on the outside of the framing? I would assume you would like to see the sheathing/foam flush with the ICF
@uptokode2 жыл бұрын
I did that to give the wall more bearing on the concrete slab. The exterior sheeting is flush with that ICF strip.
@tombrown032 жыл бұрын
@@uptokode do you install continuous exterior insulation? I’m doing a floating slab that requires 2” silverboard around the whole outside (including foundation), so I was just going to use the ICF as the foundation insulation then install the framing in a way that allows the 2” foam to be flush with the icf face
@uptokode2 жыл бұрын
That’s exactly what I would do in your situation. Keep in mind “Homega” by Nudura is sheet foam with furring strips built in. 2 5/8 thick, 3 1/2” and 3 7/“. Check that out.

With the grade ascending didn't you end up with the grade higher than the top of slab back towards the house and therefore wouldn't you need a curb so that concrete was 8" above finished grade?
@uptokode2 жыл бұрын
The grade near the house was above the slab height. I gave the homeowner specific instructions on how to build and protect his walls (as he framed and finished the garage himself)

Do you have any details on how the ground is prepared on the inside and how the foam is laid dows on a angle to have proper support? How is the angle staying in place while it is being compacted and shaped for the inside perimeter?
@uptokode3 жыл бұрын
Place and pack the gravel with similar sloping. Add the foam on top and the sides we mitred the foam and placed some screws to stitch the foam together so it wouldn’t move. Once the rebar was placed nothing moves. If you need more info just email me. Check the description of ANY video for the link.

I need to raise grade several feet, I'm wondering if I can put ICF block on grade,, stack the blocks one or two levels high, pour the footers, and then back fill the inside tamp, do all my plumbing, insulation and pour my slab, then backfill exterior? Does this make sense in any way?
@uptokode3 жыл бұрын
This makes sense. Are you in a climate that gets frost? Email me if you need more info. kody@uptokode.com
@tjmazur96974 жыл бұрын
I don't know where your located, but you have to be seriously you north to require 3 foot of horizontal insulation. I built my workshop near Salt Lake City and only needed to go 12 inches below grade using ICF (no horizontal). Up in Park City, UT, it would have required 12 inches down and 16 inches horizontal. The technique I used was "Frost Protected Shallow Foundation". Btw, it does assume a heated building.

I’m guessing from your accent you’re in deep frost country. Thorough job, but not cheap. Was this easier/more cost effective than doing a conventional 4’ stem wall?
@fishon73013 жыл бұрын
Why is a 4 ft deep footer not required on a detached garage in this climate zone? Is this trenched perimeter method acceptable around most parts of the U.S. and Canada? I just don't know. I'm planning on adding on to a heated detached garage to double it's depth, making it 52'feet deep. I like this video showing the foam insulation applications.
@uptokode3 жыл бұрын
This garage can float as the slab is structural and can handle the variation in weather and frost. Most garages beyond 20x20 need to be engineered for a slab like this whereas a 4’ frost does not require engineering (may vary in different regions). If I was adding a garage to a home I would 100% install the 4’ frost wall with no exception!! You cannot have one part floating while the other is stationary. I hope this helps.

So no foam at bottom of footer areas?
@uptokode10 ай бұрын
We installed foam on the exterior that ran horizontally (at bottom of slab) about 24” wide. The engineer didn’t want the structure sitting on foam around the thickened edge of the perimeter. You can use high density foam for something specific like this but we didn’t.
@rinkevichjm2 ай бұрын
That would not be up to code in southern locations since it is vulnerable to termites. But a termite barrier could mitigate that.
@jasonadams64563 жыл бұрын
Did you cut the Nudura block in half in the middle of the snap ties?
@uptokode3 жыл бұрын
I cut them in half yes! Half the tie was left and helped bond the block to the concrete. Next time I’ll purchase an unassembled block so it’s a bit easier.

This looks like a shallow foundation. Can this be used for a 2 storeyed house?
@uptokode3 жыл бұрын
You would have to check with an engineer and it depends on your region. This one is for a 10’ tall garage and is technically an “engineered slab”. It’s designed to float and remain in one piece.

No insulation under the thickened edge? That is an awfully large section of thermal bridging around the entire slab? Seems pointless to put ICF on the outer wall if you have nothing below the thickened edge?
@markpalmer30714 жыл бұрын
That's pretty interesting. A slab like that here in Australia for a shed/garage would just be 100mm thick concrete
@uptokode4 жыл бұрын
We have frost that will heave the ground or anything sitting on it. So it needs to be strong enough so the whole entire slab moves as one unit.

Cutting the ICF blocks is a complete waste of time. You should just buy one half of the block with the clips embedded. These can be easily purchased from Celblox.
