This is the third episode of ICGEB’s The Goals of Science New Delhi. This story is about ICGEB's commitment toward the production of biofuels.
Fossil fuels are among the major causes of the high level of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. To stop climate change carbon dioxide emissions must be reduced. India is a huge agricultural country and produces a lot of organic waste from crops. These wastes are rich in cellulose compounds that are a potential source of sugars that can be useful for bio-ethanol production. Can we use these agricultural residues to produce fuels?
Syed Shams Yazdani is Group Leader of the Microbial Engineering laboratory at ICGEB in New Delhi. His research focuses on engineering fungus to produce enzymes that can digest high-content cellulose agricultural waste into sugar converting them into starting material for biofuel production.
