@@heavymetalheretic5386 Neither would he be pleased by a bunch of atheists and agnostics sitting in a concert hall listening to his music, which is the way most of us listen to Bach today. So I'd say it is totally irrelevant whether he would be "pleased" with anything we do with his music today. That's precisely what happens to all classics: The work completely leaves the cultural sphere in and for which it was created and somehow still continues to work.

You know: all your religions are fiction. But they are expressions of human emotions and conditions, desires, and despair. That's why the verbatim meaning of this aria is delusional nonsense, but the underlying feeling is genuine and has been ingeniously set in music by Bach.
