Ichabod Crane gets Chased by the headless horseman

Keep in mind, this is still considered the most accurate version of Irving's story to date and it includes wackiness not seen in the book. They nailed terror and hilarity all in one.
@jackcarter51015 жыл бұрын
How is this the most accurate? The horseman in the book is clearly Brom Bones in disguise, while the horseman in this film is clearly real.
@Tigressa1015 жыл бұрын
@@jackcarter5101 Well, it's never specified whether he's real or he's Brom Bones in this version. That's up to the viewer who it is. In terms of accuracy of the story, it's pretty accurate. It just cuts off the reveal of the Horseman's identity which adds more mystery than previously seen in the book. The decision to not reveal it's Brom Bones is really the only difference and one difference is better than what most versions did which included other unnecessary parts or cut parts out to rework them like Sleepy Hollow (1999) which cut out Brom Bones' role to just a mere small rivalry not relevant to that story. So yes, this is still considered the most accurate portrayal of The Legend of Sleepy Hollow. Make of that what you will.

@PITviper2173 жыл бұрын
I’m wondering... we still have the age old question of- “is the Headless Horseman just Brom dressed up trying to scare Ichabod off?” And I’ve always kinda thought no to be honest. It would be the perfect scare tactic to get rid of competition yes, but if it had really been Brom then Ichabod would have at least seen a head down there or something human. And it wouldn’t have had the effect on him like it did. My guess is that he saw a vision of a place more horrid than his imagination could have ever conjured. He saw himself being dragged down into hell.

For those of you who don’t know the story of the Headless Horseman.This is you’re lucky day. The story behind the Headless Horseman dates back to 1776.According to the legend,the headless Horseman was a Hessian soldier(Hessians were German auxiliaries that served in the British army,native from Hesse-Kassel and Hess Hanau)(though it wouldn’t explain how he received his horse if he weren’t a cavalryman or commander)who was decapitated by an American cannonball during the Battle of White plains during the American Revolutionary War.His head was shattered into pieces upon impact and strewn about the battlefield; his comrades carried his headless body away.The story continues that His comrades later buried his body in the cemetery near the Old dutch church of sleepy hollow from which he rises as a demonic ghost angrily searching for his head,wielding a Jack o Lantern replacement/weapon searching for his head.The story later was told that he rises during Halloween because the battle took place on October 28th.

This scene is literally a masterpiece of cinema… This scene is able to convey so much, with only music and imagery… No dialogue (except Ichabod's flashback about Brom bones's warning about the bridge) The backgrounds and atmosphere that are used in the scene convey a true feeling of dread and horror… The twisted branches, the little bits of moonlight shimmering through the cracks of the trees near the bridge… You can almost feel the breeze and dryness in the air... and not to mention the use of color… Whenever Ichabod crane is on screen dark colors fill the screen, blue, black, gray, purple… Deep calm relaxing colors… in contrast, whenever the headless horseman appears on screen (mostly) Colors like red and magenta fill the screen… A primal sense of terror and urgency flood the mind of the viewer while watching this chase... The expressions on Ichabod's face during this scene convey so much without him ever actually saying anything! (Except screaming) the smoothness of the animation matches the flow of the chase, and shows the adrenaline Ichabod is experiencing... also you have to love the attention to detail, that the headless horseman mostly uses his left hand to swing his sword... do you know who else mostly uses their left hand? Brom bones. It's another small hint that the headless horseman might actually be Brom bones in disguise. Even the horses that they both ride convey so much emotion… Looking at their horses alone can you tell you so much about the two characters. And you have to love how… Despite how much of a coward, yellow bellied, thieving, gold digging, womanizing bastard Ichabod crane is… You're still rooting for him! You don't want to see him die, You want to see him cross the bridge and be safe… The fact that you still want this character to survive, despite how unlikable they are truly shows how genius the riders were… AND THERE IS BARELY ANY DIOLAGE IN THE ENTIRE FILM!!! And of course the chase ultimately ends with an iconic image that will be remembered forever… A flaming pumpkin flying towards the camera… An image so terrifying and shocking that it is the perfect image for a Halloween film, or Halloween in general… I first saw this film when I was around five years old, and it changed me forever… I could confidently say this film made me the horror fan I am today… And this chase scene in particular, truly cemented my love for not only sleepy hollow, but filmmaking in general.

Fun fact: Disney was known for reusing animation cells in their animated films for decades. Everything from the dancing in Snow White to the deer shot in Bambi has been recycled over and over again in many different Disney films and shorts. There’s an interesting video that explains this practice where animators had to manually dig through the animation archives to find the specific animation cells to reuse, yet the time spent on searching would’ve been better used if the animators just drew some original cells, according to a veteran Disney animator.

@@98953812 Horse was said to be a monstrous, muscular brute of an equus, the proportions were accurate compared to Gunpowder's goofy proportions because they wanted to keep a serious tone for Daredevil. To be fair, Daredevil was said to be just as cruel as his master too in personality. Brute of a rider, brute of a horse. From the description in the book compared to character feed throughout different media's regarding the Headless Horseman and Daredevil, Daredevil is said to be a Rhineland Heavy Draft though the breed wasn't recognized until early 19th century. He could also be a Belgian Draft which has been around since the Middle Ages, that is not accounting for his abnormal speed for a draft horse. Then again if this isn't Brom Bones in disguise with his horse, Daredevil would be a ghost-like entity like his master so speed would be irrelevant for a dead equus.

@@Tigressa101 No one actually called Brom or Daredevil cruel in the original story, just thoughtless when they pulled their pranks.

@@agenttheater5 I was more referring to the Horseman spirit and Daredevil than Brom and the Daredevil. I think this version may be the spirit instead but its ambiguous. The spirit Horseman is probably very cruel as is his horse. If this is Brom Bones, then you would be correct.

While in the original Irving story it’s implied the Horseman was Brom in disguise, I’d like to think in this iteration, this is THE Horseman, THE spirit out for revenge, especially since 1) it’s Disney, who’s always leaned into fantastical elements of storytelling and 2) when Ichabod looks down the Horseman’s throat and sees nothing it’s proof to him that it’s the real deal.

Funny anecdote: my grandfatger loved the story of the headless horseman. He had horses as well so he and his brother got on the horse dressed as the headless horseman creating an illusion that the head he carried (his brother's) was alive. They ran around the city and scared the daylights put of everyone. Except their dad who was the only one to catch them and knew instantly it was them messing around. So whenever my family sees this movie we have a laugh remembering my grandpa

Here's 2 reasons how the Headless Horseman could laugh. 1. There is a person inside the costume pretending to be headless as he rides a horse. 2. There is a spirit controlling the undead body of the Headless Horseman.

@@rainbowkidbreylon2208 WRONG! Ichabod didn't see a body inside because It's a pitch dark night outside and Brom has black hair. Of coarse he couldn't see anything when he looked inside, it was too dark and his overactive imagination confirmed in his mind it was an actual headless horseman. The fact that the fucking thing is able to laugh without a head proves pretty conclusively that it's really Brom Bones fucking around with him. That and the fact that in the actual story they all but reveal at the end it was just Brom playing a prank.
