I attended elementary School in the 70s they would show this on reel every October. The auditorium / cafeteria / gym when you full of chairs and we would all sit and watch it. There is never anything inappropriate nobody was causing problems nobody was doing anything except appreciating something that was a true treat. ❤

Even at 24 year old as of today, even someone who’s an avid fan of horror movies, the Headless Horseman still to this day gives me chills unlike anything else, i have to hand it to my mother for getting me invested in early-mid 20th century Disney as a kid, nothing can hold a candle to old animated films, feature length or not, like old Disney!

Ol' Katrina there is a major tease. She'd obviously end up dumping Icabod for Brom anyway, she just wants Brom to feel the sting of knowing she has options. Game as old as time. The one I feel for is the poor borrowed horse. Chill guy was just trying to mosey his way home and gets embroiled in a fight for his life.

Certain scenes from this well-crafted animated short feature have remained with me for decades. The creepy hollow, the wind-raked sky with leaves blowing, and the cloud in the shape of a hand engulfing the moon -- all served to create strong memories in my young mind. The tune and narration by Bing Crosby was the frosting on the cake! Many thanks, Velvetant Films.

Interesting how a young mind can store such memories. For example, I was fascinated by the Christmas Carol cartoon wherein the door knocker deforms into Jacob Marley's fearful face. The imagery of gothic horror has changed little in centuries.

I remember loving this film as a child. Truly the best days of Disney. They were great story-tellers and would bring families together on a sunday evening. Sad to see what they've become. My friend, who animated all of the Pooh-series movies, just got fired by Disney as they move into the AI days of animation. These old films are now a time-capsule....

What was really scary about the scene where ichabod encountered the headless horseman is the moment ichabod managed to cross the covered bridge the headless horseman stopped on the other side of the bridge ichabod looked back to see if the headless horseman vanished but the moment ichabod looked back the headless horseman threw the jack o lantern he was using for a head right at ichabod which was filmed from a first-person point of view which made it look like the headless horseman was throwing the jack o lantern right at the audience

I would look forward to this cartoon every Halloween!! The animation is just beautiful. My mom's family is what is called "Old Dutch". Tomys Swartwoude came here in 1652, to work for the "Dutch India Company". The Dutch were traders and explorers, and hired Henry Hudson to find a way to get to the Pacific. The Dutch had a huge impact on this part of the Northeast. A lot of people forget this part of U.S. history. Anyway, this is my favorite Halloween cartoon. Only Disney could have this cute, funny story about Ichabod, and then turn the story into a horror story. Just Beautiful!!

I think it was Brom Bone in disguised as the headless horseshoe to scared Ichabod Crane away so he can have Katrina. There's no answer to the ending it was Brom Bone in disguised or the headless horseshoe himself. They want you to guess your theory what happened to Ichabod by your guessing what in the end.

It is unknown whether or not the Headless Horseman was a real phantom or Brom Bones in disguise (as it was heavily implied in the book on which the movie was based). However, there are some suggestions that the Horseman was indeed an actual phantom, for even when Ichabod's fearful imagination is shown beforehand, Gunpowder could not have imagined it all after hearing that frightful laugh. Some of these things appear to confirm the existence of the Horseman: Ichabod had looked inside his cloak, seeing nothing there. However, he might have screamed because he didn't expect to see Brom, rather than not expecting to see nothingness, and he finally acknowledged that Brom was a severe threat to his life. This is supported by the Horseman slashing even harder once Ichabod looked inside. Brom's horse did not have red eyes and a black mane like the Horseman's did. Brom needed a saddle, reins, and a bridle to ride his horse, while the Horseman apparently didn't. His implied spiritual nature would likely allow him to remain on his horse without any real support. Additionally, the Horseman's horse jumped high over a cliff, and was ahead of Ichabod briefly. No horse, let alone Brom's, could jump that high, and the Horseman remained in his saddle too. The Horseman appeared to be slightly skinnier than Brom. The Horseman pulled his fiery pumpkin head out of nowhere when he threw it at Ichabod, almost as though it were by magic.

Ichabod Crane DID survive that encounter, and he actually did marry the rich widow and have children. And one of his descendants, over two centuries later, learned to master the fear that was so characteristic of the Crane family line. His name was Jonathan Crane.....

I think the horseman was real because the ghost obviously did things humans can't do in real life such as jumping high with a horse & riding the horse bareback and without reins. Plus the ghost can see despite not having a head though it's suggested the pumpkin was his temporarily head. And if you look carefully, Ichabod and Gunpowder were laughing themselves silly in a graveyard before hearing the sadistic laughing from the horseman, who is seen near a grave stone. This implies Ichabod and Gunpowder by laughing have literally woken up the dead (namely the headless horseman) and the horseman will only go for anyone who is foolish enough to be near his resting place.

I've always liked this version of the story but I never liked the ending. Did Brom actually kill Ichabod? Did Katrina want Brom all along and just use Ichabod to make him jealous? If Ichabod was so popular with the ladies, why wasn't anyone concerned about his disappearance? Maybe I'm overanalyzing here, but these questions always bothered me.

This is a humorous story, about Yankees & country bumpkins, greed & jealousy, and gullibility. If you want an Irving story a la Poe, read The Devil & Tom Walker, or The Tale of the German Student. They will scare the pants off you. Even Stephen King is impressed by Irving. Also, the Depp movie is not like the original story at all.

Pretty sure Brom murdered Ichabod to get him out of the way. Why else would playing his belief in the supernatural at the party have been part of his plan unless it was just to make Katrina think Ichabod was a goofy but adorable superstitious type? He was groundworking the idea so that even if he escaped Ichabod wouldn't be able to identify his attacker. Also why the Headless Horseman specifically breaks the one rule about when you've escaped, it was Brom taking advantage of the fact that Ichabod was going to stop and take a breath because he though he'd escaped. Someone get Columbo on the double! We've got oursevels a murder!

Most of it is lore accurate. The only change is, the book is more ambiguous when it comes to the Headless Horseman's identity, although a prevailing theory is that Brom Bones dressed as the Hessian to scare Ichabod away, but in the Disney & Tim Burton versions, it is the real galloping ghoul chasing down Ichabod.
@user-lv5rd6kb5o
@user-lv5rd6kb5o 7 ай бұрын
@@TherealRNOwwfpooh I think the Disney version is Brom Bones in disguise: he throws a pumpkin onto the floor at 7:11, which could foreshadow that it's him, plus the story may be told from Ichabod's perspective, like in the book where it mentions that Ichabod is incapacitated (knocked out) by the horseman throwing his head at him, only for people to find a shattered pumpkin and Ichabod's hat at the scene of the crime.
