So pretty much during middle game, you want to analyze the board and determine what advantages you and your opponent has. Then, knowing your opponent's disadvantage, you want to attack your opponent's weakness, which'll become your "plan". You want to move your pieces and counter your opponent's moves in order to make your plan succeed. And in order to get good at making the best plays, you'd want to practice a lot.

Karpov knows the basics cold. An advance club player can know them too. Yet it is so easy to deviate from them by not being focused. Karpov knows the distinctive parts, if subtle, the relative importance of the parts and the exact sequence in a given position. Further he remains focus.

Mr Anantoly Karpov entered the guinness book of world records during his active regime in chess. He is a real genius.

Grand masters play a strong combination game and not a piece by piece moves without any purpose. As you can see in above explanation, any wrong counter play will bring you sorrow. Every move has to be played in context with opponent's counter play. You should be able to foresee at least 5-6 moves ahead of your opponent and then develop your pieces accordingly. When i played for a bank during 80's...i stood a runnerup (second place) with my practice, i lost 8 kgs due to mental energy draining. So you also have to keep physically fit for chess game. I CAN UNDERSTAND HOW MUCH EFFORTS Karpov and Dzindzichasvili must have undergone to become GM's and world champs. Besides Anatoly karpov entered the guinness book of world records during his reigning as world champ. The best way to improve chess is by watching these type of tutorials and playing out GM games on board carefully understanding each sequence of moves. You must understand every plan of your opponent. What he is upto?????? Carefully understanding pins,forks,skewers,discovered checks,passed pawn plans after exchanges. Ohhh, chess is a very difficult game, indeed. brgds LBV PRASAD INDIA

Anatoly Karpov is not only a world champion but also a great gentleman. It is astonishing how he covers the strategy of the entire game to almost the end. That is what makes him a champion.

Funny stuff. I looked into my database and found the French game Dzindzichiashvili-Bonin, USA 1988 until move 16.c2-c3 (16.Se2-d4 played instead). Game ended with a draw.

He is telling the moves at the begining, but I agree it is very fast. It is a very old course anyway (but very very good), and it was focused on the middlegame that's why they don't speak so much about the opening in this video.

One problem with the example against french defense. 1. e4 e5, 2 d4 d5, 3. Nc3 Nf6 4. Bg5 and h6 kicks the bishop of the square or forces an Bxf6 and black keeps his main bishop while white loses it. Not good in the long term.

Great video, I learned to block doubled pawns just from watching, never really knew what to do when opponent has such pawns before. But I do prefer a flat board to a 3D board because the 3D board is harder to see.

Yeah probably..Seems like Karpov is more likable but I don't think that would mean he's better than kasparov in chess? Both were giants and battled for years, but I think the reason why Kasparov became so famous is because he always does the extraordinary in games, I think this small imaginative character in kasparov gave him fame and made him, arguably, the greatest chess player of all time.

Karpov is great and so is Dzindzichashvili, but together, they don't harmonise at all, which is a pity. I think, Karpov would be much, much better if he taught alone.
