I’m surprised people disliked ichigo. As someone who recently read bleach I think he’s great. I completely agree with you
@phoebea3 жыл бұрын
I like Ichigo as a character, and agree that he does change through his character journey, however, as an amateur writer myself, I can also see why people would criticize his character. There is some truth to the claims against Ichigo's character: his initial motivation is to live a normal life, yet he seeks power to become a stronger shinigami (thus taking him further away from living a normal life), he won the genetic lottery of being a Human/Hollow/Shinigami/Vizard/Quincy/Fullbringer, and, after every loss he gains a power up which enables him to defeat the main villain of the arc. But, I think that his actual motivation is not to live a normal life. This was his initial "excuse" because it's his misbelief. He (originally) thought that he will be happy living a normal life, but when specific circumstances happened to him (proving him wrong), he realizes that what he actually wants is power: power to protect others. One can argue that this is the most basic shounen motivation, however, it's a little different in Ichigo's case. In this story world, Ichigo's powers are tied to his acceptance of an inner part of himself which he sees as an imperfection (ex. He has to accept shinigami powers to use it, he has to accept his hollow powers to use it, he has to accept his fullbringer powers to use it, etc.) So, the theme is actually: the more he (one) accepts himself (oneself), the more powerful he (one) will be. I think this is a really cool concept/theme, but it is difficult to show because it is a deep, internal character change that would not usually present externally in real life. And, in using the medium of anime/manga, internal changes cannot be illustrated as easily as a novel description in first-person POV. So, the fact that it is difficult to convey deep internal growth using an illustration-based medium is why I think Ichigo often gets thrown into the "another basic shounen MC" category by mistake. Plus, people don't understand that Ichigo's Zanpakto is the corporeal representation of this theme. So, the fight scenes aren't just a clash of opposing ideals between the good guys and the bad guys, they also represent the struggle of the shinigami (Ichigo) and their acceptance of themselves. The ambiguity of who is good and who is bad adds to this struggle. The shinigami are considered to be the "good guys" because the story is told from this lens, however, to a Human/Hollow/Quincy/Vizard/Fullbringer in the story world, the Shinigami are not the "good guys." This adds a layer to the theme and asks: can you still accept yourself knowing who you really are (imperfections, darkness, and evil parts included)?

Protecting and saving your friends not only is the most common and shonen troupe for an mc I would ant say it’s a set and stone goal. Also the hueco mundo arc is well just 1 arc. What about for the rest of the series and it’s ending? I definitely think kubo could have developed him a goal throughout the series like how toriyama did with having gokus goal to be finding an successor to protect earth after his passing which is what he got in uub at the end of Z. But as a bleach fan protecting your friends isn’t a set and stone goal at least the way I see it and my perspective.

Ichigo has the world on his shoulders and no one really gets that. He blamed himself for his mother’s death because he feels he should have been strong enough to save her. Even though he was a child he blamed himself and spent ages going to the place where she died to find her and bring her home. People who dislike Ichigo don’t get he still blamed himself up until he found out about Yhwach was the reason for her death. He just wants to protect the people he loves and I don’t think that makes him a weak protagonist it makes him strong because he will go further than anyone else to protect the things that are precious to him. It makes me so angry that people write Ichigo off because he doesn’t run around shouting his dreams from the top of his lungs. Ichigo is a character that doesn't has any lofty ambitions, no grandiose motivation and does not has the "I want to be come this, be that" vendetta -- he's just a simple guy, a teenager at that who happens to be the protagonist and has ambitions we all might have, which are protecting his friends and family, and has the sadness of being ABSOLUTELY miserable when he doesn't. He's just someone like us who is driven to protect the people he loves, and goes through many character-arcs along all the manga, (SS, HC & TYBW being the ones where he's developing the most, honestly) but these are often overlooked because his conflicts and development are really more internal than external. I'm glad I found someone who agrees, lmao, the Ichigo slander has gone on for too long when he's a really, really great character looking into it.

A reactive character isn't necessarily bad, but a character who does not drive the plot (as in, a bad thing happens and they need to stop it) IS a reactive character. In Dragonball Z, Goku is mostly a reactive character in the Saiyan and Cell sagas. It does not make him a bad character, but you (and this video) seem to think that reactive characters are bad. If Ichiko does not drive the story through his goals or ambitions, and only affects the plot through how he reacts to things, then he is a reactive character. Luffy is an active character for most of One Piece. He sets out himself, decides to go to Skypiea for the hell of it and runs into a prison to save his brother. He drives the story instead of the story driving what he does next. It doesn't make him a better character, but it makes him an interesting one given the world of One Piece, as wherever Luffy goes, the plot follows.
@jamesschmidt31912 жыл бұрын
This is literally life. Like, things happen, and as human beings, being able to sense stimuli, we react to them, naturally. Sometimes whether we want to or not, involuntary reflexes etc. But our active reactions and way we handle certain events in life are crucial in shaping our journeys and stories. So I agree 100% with you, this argument is just absolutely idiotic. Does Naruto not react to all the different events and challenges he encounters, as well as Luffy? Of course, or else they would just stand there and do nothing. They all react differently, and depending on the scenario. So dumb. Edit: I am not sure if I agree with you or disagree, I think I'm confused on what message you were conveying or I misunderstood that topic in the video. I thought that we were saying that this argument is used AGAINST Ichigo to show he isn't a good character, and THAT was the stupid argument. If you meant the fact that Ichigo is a reactive character, supports the belief he is poorly written, and you agree with that, then I do NOT 100% agree with you, but 100% disagree. So yeah, I'm confused. My bad. To be clear, I think reactivity is a characteristic of every main character, every human actually, and that Ichigo is a great character; Luffy or Naruto aren't any better, as they all react to things too, as again, its what creatures (even plants literally??) do. Lol.

All Ichigo does is struggle, and he fails a lot, he can’t accept himself for the longest time. I don’t see how anyone could say he’s a Mary Sue unless they heard it somewhere but haven’t read Bleach. And villains always drive plots, they want change, the heroes always react to that. I can’t think of a revolutionary protagonist that wants to change everyone’s way of life. Ichigo almost died to get his shinigami powers, almost died getting his Vizard power, died twice in Hueco Mundo for those two power ups, gave up his power, then worked and got it back and had it stolen again, then he got his powers back as a favor from all the people he helped save, and then trains for his final power up. I guess you could say the last one and Tsukashima giving him back his sword was handed to him but he had to start from scratch multiple times and Yhwach just stole his brand new power so no one should feel upset about Tsukashima giving it back.

DBZimran.....it allllll started with your Bleach misconception video. I'm glad and overjoyed to have been around since then and can't wait to see what you've done after this. Ichigo is in my top 10 list of Shonen protags. His misconceptions and blind hate, have infuriated me on a level where its an echo chamber of statements that just show an obvious void of deprived of thought and I cannot help but retaliate if I am being mean or not. I look forward to the return of Bleach More and more because of you. Thank you.

My favorite quote of Ichigo is when he's fighting Ulquiorra and tells him that it's not that he "thinks" that he can defeat him, but rather that he "has" to defeat him. Even when in a truly disadvantageous scenario, his duty to his loved ones were always the driving force of his actions and I think that's better than "I need to defeat you so I can become X/Y/Z".

Bleach was the first anime I watched and finished on my own (my sister and I would watch anime together) and he really helped shape who I am today even if I didn't realize it until recently...I kinda dropped Bleach when it was ongoing (I was just impatient and sad because it was the TYBW arc) but after it ended and I read Kubo's author letter about how he wanted to end the story...I blasted through reading the entire manga and loved every moment and remembered why I loved the series in thr first place....Ichigo os one of those characters who I hold dearly in my heart...I wouldn't say I love him because its a little different than that...I can't really describe how I feel about him and the series...but I will always love and enjoy Bleach and Ichigo will always be my go to for anime that I love.

Ichigo gets an unfair bad reputation because he's constantly compared to Luffy and Naruto. Those two have clear and well-thought out external goals while Ichigo's goal is very internal. Ichigo wants to protect his loved ones so he doesn't have to go through the trauma of what happened to his mother again. He'll literally go to hell and back if it meant keeping his loved ones safe. Having an external goal does not make a good shonen protagonist by itself. People have to remember that Ichigo's just a normal kid from our world. Having a clear goal works for characters like Luffy and Naruto because they live in a fantastic world while Ichigo lives in a world very similar to our own. The best and most well-written protagonists are characters that don't have a clear goal; for example, Yusuke Urameshi from Yu Yu Hakusho. Yusuke doesn't have a clear goal yet he's considered one of the best shonen protagonists. Yusuke and Ichigo have a lot in common and one of them is that they don't have a clear goal, especially Yusuke. Ichigo's goal is to protect his loved ones while Yusuke's goal (although it's never stated by him) is growing up and becoming a man. Having a clear goal is fine but it's not necessary for a shonen protagonist. The best protagonists actually don't have goals; Gintoki Sakata from Gintama is considered one of the best, if the best, shonen protagonists and he doesn't have a clear goal.

i still get teary eyed whenever I think about or watch the moment Ichigo saves Rukia from execution. That moment, Rukia accepted her fate and that she's at peace with it and she regrets nothing but when Ichigo arrived, she must've felt so happy. Then the next scenes with Ukitake and his team arriving fully stopping the execution, if I were Rukia, I'd literally bawl my eyes out. She never expected anybody to help her. I mean, she wholeheartedly understood why her own brother would not interfere and just seems to be okay with what's going to happen. The last thing I'd expect if I were her is these people who will put their lives on the line for her. This moment was very emotional for me. Because Ichigo never gave up in saving her. It must've felt so great to know that there are people like that on your life who truly cares for you no matter what.

Finally! A detailed and thorough Ichigo Kurosaki analysis! A lot of people love to miscredit his characterization and make him seem like he’s completely one dimensional when he’s not! He’s a realistic teenage boy who didn’t have some huge specific goal, and that is what a lot of “haters” don’t get. He wanted a normal life and that is fine! He may not be the pinnacle of shonen mcs (such as Luffy) or even one of the best written, but he’s still a GREAT mc for this series!

I'm not gonna go to detail or make this too long but I just wanted to say Ichigo is the most relatable character in media for me. I lost two incredibly important people in the same day. I blamed myself for them being gone even when everyone told me that I wasn't responsible. I'm always trying to help everyone but never myself while doing it all by myself. It's gotten better but the thought of losing someone close to me again drives me to the extremes. Life is hard and unfair. There is a lot you have to accept and struggles will never cease to show themselves. Not everyone understands how Ichigo feels, which is okay as this feeling is hard to bare, but those of us who do really can see how deep and misunderstood he really is. I appreciate Ichigo genuinely and hope to everyone going through similar struggles to have success in beating them.

Courageous, selfless, heroic, loving, protector, true friend, caring son/brother. These are all the qualities of Ichigo. His character is not only well written, but it take on a life of its own. He has progressed over all of these years to finally knowing more of the truth about his own powers and where they stemmed from. He hasn't yet to show his full control of his powers or even the full extent of them, but that's what's so great about the writing, because you always are kept wa during what his true full potential is and what's it going to take to draw it out. His character has grown exponentially over these years. Anyone who has watched the series from the beginning would know this. Great job, great series, and great character developments

Only ten minutes in and this is already the single most accurate breakdown of Ichigo I've ever seen. So many people see him as 2D, but he's an incredibly elaborate illustration of fighting with everything you have, and then some, to protect your loved ones. I'm sure we've all been there at some point, it's an expression of human nature, beautifully exemplified through excellent character writing.

His heroism is what makes him an admirable protagonist. Yes some can be put off by it but he does what's right, even if it brings him to conflict with his nominal allies in Gotei 13. And to think they very nearly turned him into a mutilated battery to be harvested, makes you wonder what his take on the Spirit King is given he was next in line to be it. He got a well deserved ending with Orihime and his friends/family in the end.

Ichigo helped me with my depression more than any other mc. The themes of self-doubt, dispair, depression, internal turmoil, fate and what "resolve" and "to be strong" mean hit way too close to home. That is the beauty of Ichigo. Bleach is not escapism. Bleach is a journey of self discovery, acceptance, and growth. The scenes in his internal world are a piece of art. I think Naruto and Luffy have their own value in different ways. But for those dealing with mental health issues, I think Ichigo is as inspiring as it can get. Maybe in the end Ichigo is not for everyone, Bleach is for those who are in the right space of mind and have experienced some things in life. I might be wrong but that is how I feel.

Luffy and Naruto were *not* born with a normal life on the other hand ichigo was just suddenly forced to grasp the concept of shinigamis and hollows and fight them. Luffy and naruto had big dreams becuz their world was common but in bleach ichigo had no clear dream becuz he was not born into and neither was there anything big to become. Naruto and Luffy were raised in an uncommon world but ichigo was forced to fight and was made to see uncommon things making him feel like an outsider from his own world where he just wanted to be a normal person. Ichigo at the start of the series just wanted to be a normal person but as the show progressed his goals changed becuz then he wanted to protect his friends and keep them safe from everything. Ichigo always had issues with his own self when his mom died, he started seeing ghosts then he was made a shinigami and had to struggle with his power sure same happened with naruto but ichigo had more struggle with him being a hybrid. Naruto was hated yea sure he was but he still never gave up but ichigo hated himself for being different making him unable to open up to ppl clearly. @phoebea3 жыл бұрын

BUT the trials and reasons for that they go through are phenomenally different. Was a long vid but still felt short ( hope that comes out the right way...) Love it mate! Appreciate how much time and effort must have gone into this one! Again you're a champ!

the montage at the beginning already gives me chills but for all intents and purposes, hes just a regular guy with a crazy mixed bloodline that just wants to protect his friends and his town, and eventually gets roped into protecting reality itself because thats kind of important, he fights for good and keeping people alive. he is hit multiple times in the story with "why are you here, why are you doing this" and ichigo often doesnt know himself, which is honestly easy to relate to. hes just doing what he thinks is right, unlike other protagonists that push the world forward, ichigo actually is the one getting dragged along by the world, but its his power, his lineage, his bonds and his way of life that change everything, the other characters gravitate to him just like people gravitate to naruto but the end goal isnt ichigo becoming someone great, he just wants everyone to live and be happy, bad shit happens and he has to do what he needs to do. i dont think aizen planned for rukia to do what she did, but he was also a man who didnt care when things went awry as he could adapt, ywach didnt plan for ichigo to become a powerful mixed blood warrior, it all just kinda happened, and thats whats impactful about it, in life stuff happens and you gotta adapt, ichigo adapted with the help of many just like us all

This is one of your best videos. I'm glad you built up your analysis skills to make this. I agree with you and I believe the only flaw in BLEACH is its inability to properly have its audience understand its story on the first or second watch/read. Having its audience misunderstand the character's development, power scaling, and plot is a flaw on Kubo's part.
